<서동요>의 후대적 수용 양상과 변용 연구 (A Study on the Embracing Process and Change of in Posterity)

초록

<서동요>는 신라 제26대 진평왕(眞平王) 때 지었다는 4구체 향가로 그 설화(說話)와 함께『삼국유사(三國遺事)』권2「무왕조(武王條)」에 실려서 전하고 있다. <서동요>는 오랫동안 유동과 적층의 반복을 통하여 이루어진 작품으로, 서동과 선화공주의 신분을 초월한 애정의 노래이지만 실은 다양한 성격을 지니고 있어서 변용(變容)과 수용(受用)이 다양한 장르에서 진행되고 있다.
<서동요>가 지니고 있는 노래의 모호성과 숨겨진 함의는 문학의 소재(素材)로 사용되기에 충분한 가치를 지니고 있고, 여러 장르로의 전환과 변용이라는 작업을 통해서 작품에 새로운 생명력을 부여하고 있다. 무엇보다 우리는 <서동요>를 단순히 신라시대의 노래로만 볼 것이 아니라 현재까지도 계속해서 생성되고 있는 다양한 성격을 지닌 텍스트라는 사실을 잊지 말아야 한다. 향가 <서동요>는 다양한 전승(傳承)과정을 거쳐서 조선시대에는 이복휴의 악부(樂府) <서동>으로 가창되어서 현실세계에 대한 강한 문제의식을 보여주었다. 현대에 와서 향가 <서동요>는 현대시⋅현대소설⋅드라마⋅뮤지컬 등을 통하여 대중들과 새롭게 소통하고 있다.
<서동요>를 재창조한 작가들은 <서동요>를 새로운 시각으로 재현하고자 노력했다. 무엇보다 창작자들이 서동과 선화공주의 애정담(愛情談)에 비중을 두기 보다는 인간의 현실적인 모습과 사회적인 상황에 초점을 맞추어 형상화하고자 시도하였다. 그것은 기존의 해석을 극복하고 다양한 감상의 경험을 제공하고자 하는 시도이면서 동시에 삶과 감정의 원형을 추적해가면서 인간에 대한 이해를 증진하려는 노력이다. 또한 <서동요>를 다양하게 변용한 작품이나 콘텐츠를 통하여 작가가 작품을 대하는 태도나 주제의식을 살필 수 있다.

영어초록

<Seodongyo> which is a Hyangga (an old korean folk song) constituted in 4 phrases, known as written in the period of King Jinpyeong, the 26th King of Shilla Dynasty, was recorded with a fable at 「Muwangjo (Article for King Mu)」 in volume 2 of 『Samgukyusa (the Heritage of Three States)』 and has been told to this day. <Seodongyo> which is a work made with repetitions of floating and accumulation among people for a long time, is a song of romance between Seodong (A guy from west) and a princess Seonhwa transcending their social standing, however actually it has various properties so that changes and embracements have been being proceeded in various genres. Recently studies of <Seodongyo> has been being discussed in various aspects such as cultural contents, songs, literature, visual image, regional culture, architecture, storytelling etc. and their various implication can be considered as variegated.
The song’s ambiguity and hidden implication that <Seodongyo> contains has enough value to be used as a material for the literature and endow works with fresh vitality through the process of conversion and change into various genres. First of all we should not forget that <Seodongyo> is not only a Shilla dynasty’s song but a text with various properties which have been being created even now. <Seodongyo>, a Hyangga, was sung during Chosun dynasty as Akbu (words of song) of Lee Bokhyu’s <Seodong> to show strong critical consciousness against real world. And in modern times, the Hyangga <Seodongyo> newly communicates with public through modern poems, modern novels, dramas and musicals.
Writers who recreated <Seodongyo>, tried to represent <Seodongyo> in new vision. First of all the writers tried to visualize realistic appearance and social situation of human beings focusing on them instead of weighing romance story between Seodong and the princess Seonhwa. It is a trial to overcome existing interpretation and to offer experiences of various sentiments and at the same time it is an endeavor to increase the understanding of human being investigating the original form of the life and emotion. In addition we can review writer’s attitude or his consciousness of the theme against his work through the work or contents changing <Seodongyo> variously. That is not the simple meaning of cut between the past and the present on the contrary it can be considered as the continuation of the present based on the past through the work.
