발해의 가마(窯)에 대한 일고찰 (Study of Balhae earthenware kilns)

초록

발해에서 흙을 이용하여 토기, 기와, 벽돌, 자기 등을 생산하였던 가마터는 11개 유적이 확인된다. 발굴된 가마의 수는 20기이며 그 중 19기에 대해서는 조사내용이 알려져 있다. 가마의 종류는 벽돌 가마, 벽돌․기와 가마, 기와 가마, 토기 가마, 자기 가마가 확인되며, 기와 가마에서는 토기도 소성하였다.
이 글에서는 아직 발굴이 되지 못한 순수 벽돌 가마를 제외한 다른 종류 가마들에 대해서는 모두 조사내용을 자세하게 소개하였고, 그 다음에는 발해 가마의 특징을 살펴보았으며, 마지막으로 발해 가마의 기원 문제를 검토해 보았다.
가마의 입지는 벽돌․기와 가마는 구릉의 경사면, 기와 가마는 평지, 토기 가마는 강가 언덕, 자기 가마는 산등성이 등 가마의 종류에 따라 차이를 보였다. 구릉의 경사면과 강가 언덕의 경사면을 굴착하여 만든 벽돌․기와 가마와 토기 가마는 모두 굴식이며, 기와 가마와 자기 가마는 지상식이다. 하지만 대부분의 가마들이 아궁이와 연소실, 소성실, 배연구와 굴뚝이라는 수평적 구조를 가지고 있으며, 예외 없이 소성실의 바닥 경사가 완만한 평요이다. 배연구와 굴뚝은 3개씩인 벽돌․기와 가마를 제외하면 기본적으로 1개씩이나 끄라스끼노 성에서 2개씩인 기와 가마가 1기 조사되었다. 굴뚝의 위치도 소성실 뒷벽 밖이 기본이나 토기 가마 1기와 2차로 사용된 기와 가마 1기에서는 예외적으로 소성실 내부에 위치한다. 가마의 벽체 조성에는 벽돌․기와 가마에서는 흙벽돌과 벽돌이, 기와 가마에는 돌이, 토기 가마에는 흙이 각각 사용되었으나, 아궁이와 배연구에는 모든 종류의 가마에서 대부분 돌이 사용되었다.
지금까지 중국과 러시아 학자들은 모두 발해 가마의 기원을 당나라의 기와 가마에서 찾고 있다. 하지만 당과 발해의 가마는 연기를 배출하는 부분이 가장 큰 차이를 보인다. 발해의 벽돌․기와 가마에는 3개의 배연구 뒤로 소성실 밖에 3개의 굴뚝이 조성되어 있지만, 당나라 기와 가마에는 소성실 뒤로 격벽을 사이에 두고 연기 방이 시설되어 있어 5개의 배연구가 1개의 연기 방 공간과 연결되는 구조이다. 발해의 기와 가마는 축조 재료와 구조 등이 당의 기와 가마와는 크게 다르다. 한편 발해의 가마는 수평적 구조로서 아래에 아궁이와 연소실이 있고 위에 소성실이 있는 수직적 구조의 말갈 토기 가마와도 완전히 다르다.
이와는 달리 백제 사비기의 기와 가마들은 발해 가마들과 많은 유사성을 보인다. 구릉의 경사면이나 강가 언덕 경사면이라는 입지, 평요의 존재, 아궁이와 연소실, 소성실, 배연구와 굴뚝이라는 기본 구조, 연소실과 소성실 사이의 단벽, 배연구와 굴뚝의 개수 및 위치 등이 서로 비슷하다. 또한 발해 기와 가마에서와 마찬가지로 토기도 소성하였다. 그 외에도 백제 사비기에는 석축 가마도 드물지만 확인된다. 따라서 발해의 벽돌․기와 가마와 기와 가마의 기원은 당이 아닌 백제 사비기의 기와 가마에서 찾아야할 것이다. 한편 발해의 기와 가마와 소성실 내에 배연구와 굴뚝이 위치하는 토기 가마는 축조 방식과 재료 그리고 구조가 다른 시공간의 가마들에 비해 고유의 특징적인 요소들을 많이 보이고 있다.

영어초록

Kilns that produced pottery, tiles, bricks and porcelain using ground (or clay) were met in 11 Balhae sites. In total 20 kilns were excavated, materials from 19 of them are known. There were brick kilns, brick-tile kilns, tile kilns, pottery kilns and porcelain kilns among them. In tile kilns pottery could be produced too.
In this article we review all kinds of Balhae earthenware kilns, except brick kiln, because it has not yet been investigated. Then we consider the nature of Balhae earthenware kilns and finally, the problem of their origin.
Location of earthenware kilns is varied, for example, brick and tile kiln are located in low hill-side, tiled kilns on flat places, pottery kiln in slop of river bank etc. Brick-tile kilns and pottery kilns built into the hillside or slope of the river bank belong to cave type, tile and porcelain kilns to above-ground type. However, all kilns have horizontal structure with hearth, firing chamber, chimneys channel and pipe. Almost in all kilns firing chamber bottom is slightly inclined, that is, they are flat type kilns. There is usually one chimney channel and one pipe, and in brick and tiles kilns there are three chimney channels and pipes. But, in Kraskino fortress a tile kiln with two chimney channels and two pipes was investigated. Pipe is located mainly outside at the back of firing chamber, but as an exception in one pottery kiln and one tile kiln, which was partly destroyed and rebuilt for the second time, the pipe was located inside firing chamber. Brick and tile kilns were built of sun-dried earth bricks and baked bricks, tile kilns of stones and pottery kilns of earth. However, almost in all kilns stones were used for furnace and hearth.
Chinese and Russian scientists consider that Balhae brick-tile kilns and tile kilns originate from Tang China tile kilns. But there is a big difference between kiln flues in Tang China and in Balhae. In Balhae brick and tile kilns there are three pipes connected to three flue duct openings and in Tang China tile kilns there are no pipes but there is one smoke chamber, connected with five flue duct openings. Balhae tile kilns are very differ from the Tang China ones by their structure and materials for construction also. On the other hand, horizontal Balhae kilns’ structure differs from Malgal ones, which have vertical structure, with furnace below, and the firing chamber above it.
In contrast, the tile kilns of Sabi Baekje period are very similar with Balhae ones. Their location in hillside or slope of river bank, the flat type, the basic structure with fireplace, hearth, firing chamber, chimneys channel-openings and pipes, a step between the hearth and the firing chamber, the number and location of chimney channels, pipes are very similar. In addition, in Baekje tile kilns pottery vessels were produces, as it was in Balhae. In Baekje Sabi period stone kilns were found too, although they are not frequent. Consequently, the origin of Balhae brick and tile kilns and tile kilns would be found to tile kilns of Baekje Sabi period. Finally, Balhae tile kilns and pottery kilns with flue duct openings and pipes inside the firing chamber show a lot of unique elements that are not characteristic for kilns of another time and other areas.
