엔터프라이즈 블록체인, 어디까지 왔나? -포춘500대 기업을 중심으로- (Enterprise Blockchain Adoption Status - Focused on the 2018 Fortune Global 500 -)

초록

블록체인 기술은 제3자의 개입 없이 데이터를 ‘블록’에 저장이 가능한 탈중앙화 분산원장기술로 기존의 중앙 집중적 서비스 구조에서 일어나는 보안성 문제, 익명성 유지 및 거래 주체에 대한 검증의 문제를 해결할 혁신적인 기술로 부상하였다. 하지만 가상화폐의 등장과 함께 전 세계적인 투기 열풍에 가려져 최근에야 금융, 물류, 의료 등 다양한 산업 분야에서 블록체인을 활용한 상용 비즈니스 모델 적용을 위한 ‘엔터프라이즈 블록체인’에 대한 관심이 증대하기 시작하였다.
본 연구는 가상화폐의 인기와는 별개로 거래의 무결성과 보안성 등의 장점으로 도입 시 거래처리비용 감소, 생산성 증대, 나아가 기업의 미래성장동력으로 작용할 수 있는 엔터프라이즈 블록체인에 대한 적용현황을 파악하고자 하였다. 이에 엔터프라이즈 블록체인 개발 및 상용화에 가장 앞서 있는 미국 기업들을 대상으로 엔터프라이즈 블록체인의 도입현황을 연도별, 발표내용별, 산업별로 분석하였다. 그 결과, 가상화폐 열기가 식은 2018년 이후부터 기업의 블록체인에 대한 투자가 활발해졌으며 컨소시움 형태로 파트너쉽을 구축하여 개발에 착수하는 형태가 가장 많았다. 또한, 타 산업대비 암호화폐의 등장과 함께 블록체인 기술을 선도적으로 적용한 금융업에서 역시 활발한 투자활동이 이루어지고 있었다. 비금융산업 중에서는 거래가 다양하고 복잡한 제조업이 가장 많은 투자가 이루어지고 있었으며 블록체인 상품 및 서비스를 개발하여 제공하고 있는 IT서비스 기업들이 속한 서비스업이 뒤를 따랐다.
현재까지 기업의 블록체인 기술도입 관련 선행연구들은 수용 의도 연구나 암호화폐 관련 연구가 주로 이루어져 온 점을 볼 때, 기업의 도입현황과 실태를 실증 분석한 결과는 의의와 함께 향후 우리나라 기업들에 시사하는 바가 크다.

영어초록

Blockchain is the distributed ledger technology that saves data into the chains of "block," which can solve the issues occur in the current centralized structure, such as maintaining the anonymity of a transaction, internet security concerns, and the difficulties in the verification of the transaction entity and target. Blockchain technology is considered as one of the most innovative technologies appeared in recent years. However, the global cryptocurrency speculative frenzy has overshadowed the potential of the blockchain technology itself until the interest in the "enterprise blockchain" increased along with the collective industrial efforts in expanding blockchain's application to the commercial business areas including finance, logistics, medical, and etc. This research, separately from the popularity on the cryptocurrency, sought to review the status of blockchain technology adoption that may function as the drive for future growth for enterprises as well as resolving the assymetric information between the executive managers and information users.
This research limited target samples to the 2018 Fortune 500 United States Companies (Fortune US 500) which are considered as the most advanced in the adoption, development and commercialization of the enterprise blockchain and summarized the status of the adoption by year, announcement context, and industry. We conducted the textual search of Fortune US 500 company's blockchain related official announcements. The result suggests that since 2018, the time period in which the cryptocurrency speculation fever settled, the U.S. corporation's investment on the blockchain became active and the majority of the investments were in the form of consortium targeting to increase transactional efficiency in certain industry. Additionally, the financial industry, in which the blockchain technology was adopted relatively early due to the appearance of the cryptocurrency, still showed active investment activities during the research period. Among non-financial industries, the manufacturing industry showed the most active investment activities due to complicated and intricate forms of manufacturing transactions, and the service industry includes IT service firms ranked secondly.
The significance of this research can be found in that it has performed empirical analysis on the status of the enterprise blockchain adoption, unlike preceding researches mainly focused on the intention of reception of the technology or cryptocurrency related issues.
