경성제대 영문과 네트워크에 대하여 -식민지 시기 한국문학에 있어서 ‘영문학’과 이중언어 창작- (A Study on the Network of the English Department of Keijo University -"English Literature" and Bilingual Writing in Colonial Period Korea-)

초록

1924년에는 경성제국대학 예과가 개설되고 2년후인 1926년에는 본과가 개교됐다. 그것을 전후해서 식민지 시기 한국의 지적, 문화적 상황에는 일정한 변화가 생긴 것 같이 보인다. 그것과 동시에 언어적인 이중언어 문제에도 새로운 현상들이 생긴 것을 경성제대 영문과의 경우를 짚어가며 검토하는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다.
경성제대 영문과에 우수한 한국인 학생들이 모인 것을 영문과 초대 교수인 사토키요시의 회상에서 알 수 있다. 실재로 최재서, 이효석, 조용만 등 식민지 시기 한국문학을 지탱한 문학자들을 배출한 것으로 그것을 확인 할 수 있다. 특히 최재서는 일본의 평론계에 데뷰했는데 그의 경우를 통해서 경성제대 영문과가 한국과 일본을 넘어서는 지적 네트워크가 생성되어가는 가운데 하나의 결절점으로서 또는 문화적 생산점으로서 등장한 것을 알 수 있다.
최재서 등의 언어의식을 살펴보면 그들의 이중언어에 대한 의식을 알아볼 수 있다. 『전환기의 조선문학』의 서문을 보면, 최재서가 일본어와 일본문화에 대해서 “나는 일본을 호흡하여 일본 안에서 자랐다”와 같이 매우 자연스럽게 받아들이고 있는 것을 회상하고 있다. 동세대인 장혁주에서도 비숫한 회상이 보인다. 그들 세대에 있어서 일본어는 “취미”나 “교양”의 문제이고 가치판단을 떠난 것이었다고 할 수 있다. 그런 의미로 그들을 이중언어세대라고 부를 수도 있을 것이다. 그들 세대의 등장과 경성제대 의 개설은 거의 시기를 같이 하고 있고 그들의 세대적 경험에 보다 확고한 틀을 제공한 역할을 했었다. 경성제대 영문과의 교육도 그런 상황에 대응하듯이 문화적, 문학적 주체화의 의식을 가지고 있던 것을 사토키요시의 회상에서 읽을 수 있다. 경성제대 영문과의 학풍은 그들의 언어의식과 서로 매개된 것이었다고 하겠다.
식민지 시기 한국인 학생에 있어서 영문학이 특별한 위상을 가진 것은 사토키요시의 회상에서도 볼 수 있는데, 그 당시 영문학이 가지고 있던 위치에 대하여 고찰하는 것으로 논을 매듭짓는다. 식민지 시기 한국인 학생에 대하여 영문학은 민족적 정체성을 모색하기 위한 지적 참조항으로서의 역할을 했던 것 처럼 보인다. 예를 들어 이중언어나 이중의 정체성 등 이론적으로는 쉽게 근접하기 어려운 문제들이 영문학 안에 존재했었다. 특히 그런 테마들은 이 시기에 아일랜드 문예부흥이라는 모습으로 각광을 받고 있던 것이기도 하고, 사토키요시도 지속적으로 아일랜드 문학에 관심을 가진 것이 주목된다. 그것은 또하나의 영문학에 대한 지향으로서 당시 한국의 탈식민주의적인 주체화의 모색과 서로 공명했던 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

In 1924 a preparatory course of English at Keijo University was established and two years later a regular course opened up in 1926. Before and after that period, the change of the intellectual and cultural situation of colonial Korea began to take place to some extent. Simultaneously the problem of bilinguality seems to have arisen creating new circumstances. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the new phenomenon dealing with this case of circumstances in Keijo University’s English department.
Sato Kiyoshi, the first chief professor of the English department testified in his reminiscence that many excellent Korean students entered into the English department of Keijo University. In fact the English department produced many writers and poets, like Che Je-soe, Lee Hyo-suk, Cho Yong-man, who sustained Korean literature during the colonial period. Especially,the case of Che Je-soe, who made a debut as a literary critic in Japan, indicates that Keijo University played a key role in the cultural intercourse between Korea and Japan.
By examining the linguistic consciousness of Che Je-soe and other people, we can exemplify their attitude to the problem of bilingual. At the preface of Korean Literature of the Transition Period, Che Je-soe recalled that he accepted Japanese language and Japanese culture spontaneously, saying "I breathed Japan, and grew up in Japan." Zhang Hyuk-ju, who was from the same generation of Che Je-soe, likewise looked back to his boyhood. For their generation the problem of Japanese language was felt as "interest" or "education", and these were considered to be separated from the problem of value judgment. In that context, they could be called "bilingual generation". The appearance of their generation was simultaneous with the establishment of Keijo University, and the latter played a role in the framework which gave firm shape to their experiences. As if it corresponded with the situation, the education at the English department of Keijo University seemed to have the directivity of cultural and literary subjectimization, which is evidentby the reminiscence of Sato Kiyoshi. The academic tradition of the English department of Keijo University was mediated mutually with their linguistic consciousness.
"English literature" had a special phase for Korean students during that period, which is mentioned as the reminiscence of Sato Kiyoshi, so this thesis closely examines the location of English literature at that period. For the Korean students during the colonial period, "English literature" seemed to play the role of the referential item, through which it embraced the notion of national identity. In "English literature", there were problems like bilingual language or bicultural identity, which were difficult to approach through a theoretical frame like Marxism. Especially during this period, these themes came into the limelight as a form of Irish Literary Renaissance, and it is worthy to remark that Sato Kiyoshi continually showed attention to Irish literature. That seems to be the directivity for alternative English literature, and that sympathizes the searching for the postcolonial subjectimization of colonial Korea.
