근대전환기 모성의 재구성에 대하여 - 여훈서(女訓書)를 중심으로 (A study on the reconstruction of maternity in the period of transition to the modern times : focused on the Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書))

초록

본고는 근대전환기 여훈서에서 모성이 재구성되는 양상과 의미를 탐구하고 있다. 그것에 앞서 근대전환기 여훈서의 편찬의식을 살펴보았다. 근대전환기 여훈서의 편찬의식은 급속한 시대적 변화에 따른 위기의식과 그에 대한 반동으로서의 전통적 가치의 수호의지, 그리고 국가적 위기상황에 대응하기 위한 ‘국가주의 모성’에 대한 요청과 그에 따른 여성교육의 필요에 대한 공감이이라는 것을 확인하였다. 이어서 전통 여훈서에 비해 근대전환기 여훈서에서 자녀교육 관련 내용이 양적․질적으로 어떻게 변화되었는지, 그리고 그 모성은 어떤 형상의 띄고 있는지에 대해 살펴보았다. 근대전환기 여훈서에서는 자녀교육에 관련된 지식이나 예화가 차지하는 비중이 확연히 증가되었다. 교육 관련 개별 항목을 둔 것은 ‘어머니’를 여성의 정체성 중 하나로 분명히 제시하고 있는 것이다. 그리고 모범적 어머니의 형상으로 나열된 사례들은 작가적 배경의 다양성에도 불구하고 모종의 유형을 띠고 있어 고찰이 필요하다. 모성의 형상은 (1)엄격한 훈육과 학업의 독려, (2)충의와 공렴의 강조로 요약될 수 있다. 두 유형 모두 여훈서가 근대전환기의 시대적 상황을 반영하고 있다는 것을 보여준다. 그런데 근대전환기 여훈서의 모성 재구성은 여성의 권한이 보다 확대될 수 있는 근대적 가족 모델에 대한 인식이 결여되어 있으며, 유교적 종법사상에 기초한 전통가족제도를 수호하려는 입장을 강력하게 천명한다. 이러한 상황에서 강화되는 모성은 전통적으로 유지되어 온 여성의 예속은 그대로 둔 채 새로운 의무를 추가하는 것이 될 수밖에 없다. 이렇듯 근대전환기 여훈서의 모성 재구성은 제한적인 의의를 지닐 수밖에 없는 측면이 있다. 그러나 ‘국가’와 ‘민족’의 경계가 일신되는 변혁의 시기에, 유학에 기반 한 보수적 지식층에서도 국민의 ‘생산자’이자 문화의 ‘재생산자’, 그리고 ‘집단성의 전달자’로서 여성/모성이 갖는 의미를 포착하고, ‘學’과 ‘忠’이라는 전통적이면서도 근대적 의의를 지닐 수 있는 가치를 통해 여훈서로 재구성한 대응의 실천적 의의는 평가할 만한 부분이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This paper explores the aspects and meanings of maternal reconstruction in the modern transition period. Prior to that, I examined the compilation ritual of the Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書) of the modern transition period. The compilation ritual of the Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書) of the modern transition period is the will of the traditional values as the crisis consciousness and the reaction against the rapid change of the times, and the demand for 'Nationalism motherhood' in response to the national crisis and the empathy for the need for female education. In the following, I examined how the contents related to the education of the children changed quantitatively and qualitatively in the modern transition Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書) compared with the traditional Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書), and the shape of the motherhood. In the modern transition Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書), the proportion of knowledge and illustrations related to children's education has increased significantly. Having individual items related to education clearly suggests 'mother' as one of women's identities. And even though the cases listed in the form of exemplary mothers are of some type in spite of the diversity of the artist background. The shape of maternity can be summarized by (1) rigorous discipline and encouragement of study, and (2) emphasis on charity and co-existence. Both types show that Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書) reflect the times of the modern transition. However, the motherhood reconstruction of the modern transition Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書) lacks the awareness of the modern family model that women's authority can be expanded and strongly advocates the position to preserve the traditional family system based on Confucian clan rules. In this situation, the strengthening of maternity is bound to add a new obligation without leaving the traditionally maintained female subordination. In this way, the reconstruction of maternity in the modern transition Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書) has a limited significance. However, at the time of the transformation of the boundary between 'nation' and 'nation', women 's / maternity as a' producers' of culture, 'reproducers' of culture, and' communicators of collectivity ' And the value of the traditional and modern significance of '學' and '忠' can be regarded as a part of the evaluation of the practical significance of the reconstruction of the Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書).
