이병주 소설의 엑조티즘과 대중의 욕망 (An Exoticism in the novel of Byung Joo Lee and Desire of public)

초록

본고는 이병주의 문학세계의 특징으로 엑조티즘에 주목하였다. 이것은 작가의 교양주의에서 출발하는 것으로써 세계감각과 예술에 대한 동경의 연장선이다. 작가의 엑조티즘은 첫째로, 국제적 정세에 민감했던 40년대 일본의 정치정세 속에서 생활했던 영향, 작가의 지적욕망과 교양주의의 특성, 그리고 세계 감각과 세계적 정세파악의 시각을 가졌던 이병주 정치의식의 연장선이라고 보았다. 정치의식을 전면에 드러내는 대하소설들의 경우에 이러한 세계 감각이 정치문제와 더불어 나타난다. 둘째로, 이병주는 쇼와시대의 일본을 통해 서구 근대의 교양과 지성을 이상적으로 받아들였는데, 그가 가진 교양 세계의 특성이 억압적 현실과 대비되는 자유로운 공간으로서 이국풍의 가상의 공간 창조로 표출되고 있다. 이것이 중단편에 적절한 소설적 기법으로 나타났을 때, 엑조티즘과 코스모폴리탄의 감수성으로 표출된다. 이병주의 엑조티즘은 예술에 대한 동경과 연관이 된다. 그의 사상과 철학 전반에 걸쳐 영향을 미치고 있는 예술에 대한 동경은 니체 철학을 전유한 결과로 나타난다. 그의 독서편력과 지식에 대한 욕망은 예술에 대한 동경과 같은 맥락이다. 이병주의 문학이 보여주는 교양주의와 엑조티즘, 예술의 내용은 1960년대와 70년대의 대중들에게 일어났던 교양에 대한 욕망과 결합되는 것이었다. 대중의 교양에 대한 지향과 이국취향의 아비투스, 그리고 정치 해석에 대한 대중의 욕망이 이병주의 텍스트가 내포하는 딜레탕티즘, 엑조티즘, 정치담론과 호응하여 높은 대중적 수용도를 이끌어냈다. 이병주의 엑조티즘과 예술철학을 내용으로 한 딜레탕티즘의 텍스트에 대단한 호응을 보냈던 대중에게서 엘리트 문화에 대한 동경과 교양에 대한 욕망을 발견함으로써 6,70년대 베스트셀러의 사회학을 그려볼 수 있다.

영어초록

This article focused at exoticism as a feature of Byung Joo Lee's literature. It is started from the culturalism of the author and it is expanded into the global sense and desire to the arts. Firstly, the exoticism of the author was regarded as an extension of the political mind of Byung Joo Lee who was influenced by living in the midst of Japanese politics situation in 1940s which was sensitive to the international situation, by the characteristics of the culturalism education and by approaching to the political decision in the viewpoint of global sense and identification of global political situation consistently. Such global sense has been appeared with the political problems in case of the epic novel which displays the political mind to the front.
Secondly, Byung Joo Lee had accepted the culture and intelligence of the western modernism via Japan in Showa age and the characteristics of his world of culture have been expressed in creation of exotic cyber space as a free space contrasting with the suppressive reality. It has been expressed in exoticism and sensitivity of cosmopolitan when these are appeared in novelistic technique appropriate to the mid and short novels. The exoticism of Byung Joo Lee has been connected to the desire to the arts. His desire to the arts which make influence throughout his thought and philosophy has been appeared as a result from the appropriation of Nietzsche's philosophy. His wandering through the world of books and the desire to the knowledge were the same to the missing for the arts like the front and back of the coin. So many classic works which appeared at his works have the same context with the missing to the arts.
The culturalism, exoticism and the contents of arts which were displayed at the literature of Byung Joo Lee were the connection to the desire to the culture which was taken place in 1960s and 1970s. The direction of the public to the culture, the habitus in exotic taste and the desire of the public to the political interpretation attracted the highest public acceptance in response to the dilettantism, exoticism and political disclosure. The sociology of best seller in 1960s and 1970s can be drawn through finding the missing for the elite culture and desire to the culture from the public who applauded greatly to the text of dilettantism with the contents of the Byung Joo Lee's exoticism and artistic philosophy.
