Wonrim-Enjoying Culture of the Gyeonghwasejok in the Late Joseon Dynasty as Described in Euiwongis

This paper is to examine the garden-enjoying culture as described in euiwongi such as Gugokyugeogi, a letter novelist Heo, Gyun, Imwongyeongjaeji, Jehwangsangyuincheop, Suksunyeom, written by the gyeonghwasaejok, or dominant group of aristocrats in Seoul in late Joseon dynasty. The findings of this research are as follows.
First, on the background of garden formation, there was a phenomenon where every product of civilization went to Seoul. The group of people who enjoyed the greatest benefit from the phenomenon was aristocrats in Seoul who kept trying to maintain their given privileges while living in Seoul. Since they formed a residential area in the center of Seoul, each of them indicated his wish to construct a garden where he could enjoy the nature. The gardens described in euiwongi are the ideal gardens those aristocrats dreamed of.
Second, The site of euiwon in, most cases, was selected on the principle of pengsui, ‘mountain on the backside, and river in front of it'. The author wanted to construct his wonrim reveals his desire to place his wonrim inside Seoul city, which is common with other authors on their wonrims. On the other hand, depending on the authors' attitudes, euiwongis are differentiated in their sizes and variety of items in wonrim. The wonrims divided into inside garden and outside garden, and each space plays separate functions depending on structures and space constituting elements.
Third, though the scale and constitution of wonrim varies depending on the view of nature of the authors, the wonrim-enjoying culture shows commonality. The outside space of wonrim is for plant caring and appreciation, and animal rearing. Inside the residence, people enjoyed book-reading, playing musical instruments, drinking, guest treating, and baduk playing. Regardless of the scale of wonrim, a number of books were kept. While treating guests, people enjoyed drinking.
This study is the literature analysis on wonrim enjoyment using euiwongis written by the gyeonghwasaejok. But, this study has some limitation in revealing the relationship between euiwongi and real wonrim. Thus, future researches should be focused on how the wonrim-enjoying culture was embodied by real wonrim construction in the late Joseon dynasty.
