학문목적 한국어 교육에 대한 외국인 유학생 인식 조사: 한국어 어휘를 중심으로 (Investigating International Student's Private Perceptions of Korean Education for Academic Purposes: with an emphasis on Korean vocabulary)

초록

이 연구는 학부과정 및 대학원에 재학 중인 외국인 유학생을 대상으로 유학생들의 편입학에 요구되는 한국어 능력과 학부에 개설된 한국어 수업이 유학생들의 학업 수행에 어떤 영향을 끼치며 유학생들은 학업을 수행하기 위한 한국어를 어떻게 학습하는지 알아보기 위해 설문조사법을 중심으로 진행되었다. 이를 위해 먼저 대학 입학의 기준이 되는 토픽 등급과 언어교육원 수료 등급의 수준을 정리해 국어교육용 어휘 등급의 수준과 비교하였다. 이 비교를 통해 대학 입학 연령을 고려하였을 때 원어민의 어휘량과 외국인 유학생의 어휘량에는 상당한 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 어휘의 차이가 학습자들에게 어떠한 영향을 주는지 알아보기 위해 설문지를 배부하였고 회수한 설문지 중 결측치 등을 제외한 총 114부의 설문지를 정리하였다. 그 결과, 유학생들은 크게 한국어 점수 없이 입학한 경우와 토픽 등급 취득이나 언어교육원의 3･4급 수료로 대학에 입학한 경우 등으로 나누어 볼 수 있었으며 입학 전 취득한 한국어 능력이 대학생활에 긍정적인 영향을 줌을 알 수 있었다. 조사대상 학습자들에게 가장 어려운 것은 말하기(36.8%), 쓰기(34.2%), 듣기(14%), 읽기(6.1%)의 순으로 나타났으며 말하기와 쓰기가 어려운 이유 중 1위는 ‘단어의 사용 (그 단어를 언제, 어디에서 쓰는지 또는 같이 사용해야 하는 단어를 몰라서 등) 때문에’이었는데 모두 33명(28.9%)이 그렇다고 응답하였다. 그러나 ‘해당 단어의 의미를 모르는 것만으로 어려움을 겪는다’는 학습자는 의외로 16명(14%)이었다. 전공을 이해하고 과제를 스스로 해결하는 것을 돕기 위한 한국어 보충 수업의 필요성에 대해서는 전체 114명 중 62.3%(71명)가 ‘필요하다’와 ‘매우 필요하다’로 응답하였는데 이것은 학습자들의 요구에 부응하는 교육과정의 개발뿐 만아니라 현재 학부의 한국어 수업을 학문목적의 사고도구어와 전공수업을 뒷받침해주는 수준의 수업으로 개편해야 한다는 결론에 도달할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 외국인 유학생들의 한국어 어휘로 인한 학업에의 어려움을 알아봄과 동시에 입학 당시의 한국어 능력이 입학 후 전공 학습에 어떠한 영향을 끼치는 지 조사하고자 하였으나 통계적 추정보다는 해당 데이터의 중심경향성만을 중심으로 연구를 정리했다는 한계점이 있다. 그러나 한국어 교육 측면에서 보았을 때 외국인 학습자들이 대학에서의 학업에 어떠한 어려움을 겪고 있는가와 학습 방법에 대한 정량적 수치를 얻을 수 있었다는 데에 그 의의를 둔다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate how the Korean language ability required for the transfer of foreign students and the Korean language classes offered in the undergraduate program for foreign students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate schools affect the academic performance of international students. The questionnaire survey was conducted to find out whether they were learning. For this purpose, this study compares the level of the topic class and the level of completion of the language education center, which are the standard of university entrance, and then compares it with the level of the vocabulary class for Korean native language education. As a result of this comparison, there was a considerable difference between the vocabulary of native speakers and the vocabulary of foreign students, given the age of university admission. The questionnaires were distributed to examine the effect of these vocabulary differences on the learners. A total of 114 questionnaires were collected, excluding the missing values among the collected questionnaires. As a result, it was found that foreign students could be divided into two categories: entrance without Korean score, entrance into a university with a topic grade, or entrance into a university by the 3rd or 4th grade of Language Education Center, And it was found that it affected. The most difficult thing for the surveyed students was speaking (36.8%), writing (34.2%), listening (14% And reading (6.1%). One of the reasons why it is difficult to speak and write was "because of the use of the word (when, where and when to use the word, or because I do not know the word to use)", 33 respondents (28.9%) said yes. Surprisingly, 16 learners (14%) had difficulty with one word.
