한 ‧ 중 항일기념관의 전시 내러티브와 동아시아 역사인식 ‒ 독립기념관·중국인민항일전쟁기념관을 중심으로 ‒ (The Exhibition Narratives between the Korean and Chinese Anti-Japanese Memorials and East Asia’s Perceptions of History)

초록

이 연구에서는 한국과 중국의 대표적인 항일기념관인 독립기념관과 중국인민항일전쟁기념관을 중심으로 건립과정과 전시 내러티브를 비교 검토하고 전시에서 재현된 동아시아 역사인식을 살펴보았다. 두 기념관은 1982년 일본의 역사교과서 파동을 계기로 1987년 건립하였으며 항일투쟁사를 주제로 전시 내러티브가 구성되었다. 이를 통해 일제의 침략만행을 고발하고 민족단결의 통합가치를 강조한다는 점에서 공통된 특성이 있었다.
동아시아 역사인식에 대한 검토 결과 두 기념관 모두 일제의 침략만행을 고발하고 있으나 오늘날 일본에 대한 인식은 차이가 있었다. 독립기념관은 일본의 역사왜곡과 영토분쟁을 규탄한데 반해 항전관은 중일우호관계를 강조하였다. 한국과 중국의 상호인식, 한중공동항일투쟁에 대한 인식은 충분치 않았다. 동북항일연군, 조선의용대(군), 일본군‘위안부’ 등 공통된 전시주제가 확인되었지만 두 기념관 전체 전시 속에서 차지하는 비중이 극히 적고 역사해석에서 차이가 있었다.
두 기념관의 전시 내러티브를 구체적으로 검토해볼수록 양국 간 역사 인식차가 더욱 커진 원인은 두 기념관 모두 각국에서 공식적으로 공유되는 집단기억을 전시 내러티브로 삼았기 때문이다. 역사인식의 주체와 목적이 달랐기 때문에 전시되는 내용 또한 다를 수밖에 없었던 것이다. 이는 한국과 중국이 일본제국주의에 의해 피해를 입었고 항일투쟁을 전개한 유사한 역사경험을 했기 때문에 역사인식 또한 크게 다르지 않을 것이라는 예상과는 다른 결과였다. 두 기념관이 한국과 중국에서 차지하는 위상을 염두에 두어볼 때 기념관에서 확인되는 역사인식과 내러티브의 차이는 한·중 양국의 근현대사 인식을 대변한다고 볼 수 있다.
일본의 역사왜곡이 확대 강화되는 현재 독립기념관과 항전관의 역할은 더욱 중요하다. 두 기념관은 철저한 고증을 거쳐 일본의 역사왜곡을 실증적으로 반박하는데 주력해야 할 것이다. 또한 지속적인 교류로 한 중 양국의 역사해석을 공유하고 상호 인식을 확대하여 한중 역사공조의 토대가 될 수 있도록 역할을 담당해야한다. 두 기념관의 활동을 통해 동아시아 공동의 역사인식을 형성하고 반침략 평화주의를 후손에게 전승할 수 있기를 기대한다.

영어초록

This study compared and reviewed the representative anti-Japanese memorials of South Korea and China, namely Independence Hall of Korea (獨立紀念館) and Museum of the War of Chinese People’s Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (中國人民抗日戰爭紀念館), in the establishment process and exhibition narrative and examined East Asia’s perceptions of history reproduced in their exhibitions. The two memorials were founded in 1987 after the history textbook issue in Japan in 1982 and organized their exhibition narratives on the theme of anti-Japanese struggle history. They share common features of reporting on the invasion barbarities of Japanese imperialism and emphasizing the integrated value of national solidarity.
The study reviewed East Asia’s perceptions of history and found that both the memorials reported on the invasion barbarities of Japanese imperialism, but there were differences in the perceptions of Japan today between them. While the Independence Hall of Korea condemned the history distortion and territory disputes of Japan, Museum of the War of Chinese People’s Resistance Against Japanese Aggression put an emphasis on friendly relationships between China and Japan. There was no enough mutual perception between Korea and China and no enough awareness of joint anti-Japanese struggle between Korea and China. The two memorials shared certain exhibition themes such as Northeast Anti-Japanese Allies(東北抗日聯軍), Korea Volunteers Army(朝鮮義勇隊), and “comfort women” for the Japanese military, but those themes had a very small percentage of the entire exhibitions at the two memorials and were subject to differences in historical interpretations.
The more specifically the two memorials were compared in exhibition narrative, the bigger differences were found in historical perceptions between the two countries. It was because both the memorials took the collective memory officially shared among people in their respective nations as exhibition narrative. Since the subjects and goals of historical perceptions were different, it was only natural that the content of exhibition became different, which did not agree with the prediction that there would be no big differences in historical perceptions between Korea and China since both the countries shared similar historical experiences such as suffering the damage by Japanese imperialism and engaging in anti-Japanese struggle. Considering the status of the two memorials in Korea and China, respectively, the differences in historical perceptions and narratives confirmed at the two memorials seem to represent the perceptions of early modern and modern history in the two nations.
As Japan is expanding and reinforcing its actions for historical distortions, the roles of Independence Hall of Korea and Museum of the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression grow bigger and bigger. They need to focus on reputing the historical distortions of Japan through thorough historical research and build a foundation for historical cooperation between Korea and China by sharing the historical interpretations and broadening mutual perceptions between the two countries through ongoing exchanges. It is expected that the two memorials will contribute to the joint historical perceptions in East Asia and the transmission of anti-invasion pacifism to later generations through their activities.
