탈주의 신화와 공시성의 문학 ―박태원의 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』에나타난오디세우스주제 (Myth of Escape and Literature of Synchronicity)

초록

박태원의 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』은 호메로스부터 단테, 조이스, 레비에 이르기까지 서구에서 나타난 오디세우스 신화의 변이의 양상이 1930년대 한국근대문학의공간에서 재연된 경우다. 신화는 불변항으로 존재하는 본질과 맥락에 따라 변화하는 가변체의 두 부분들이 공재하는 특징을 지닌다. 오디세우스 신화를 오디세우스의 귀환의 유보와 그로 인한 기원의 부재의 모티프로 구성된 방랑이라는 측면에서 해석할 때, 오디세우스 신화는 불변항과 가변항이 공재하는 신화의 속성을 잘 구현한다.
신화는 자체의 기원으로 돌아가지 않으며 대신 새로운 가변체들의 총체로서 존재하는 경향이 있는 것이다. 이런 측면에서 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』에서 묘사되는 구보의 방랑을 신화라고 부르는 것은 일정한 의미를 지닌다. 구보의 방랑 신화는 오디세우스 신화에 주제적 기원을 두고 있으면서 그것을 읽는 다양한 독자들의 맥락들과의 유희적 관계 맺음을 통해서 신화의 가변적 속성을 지속시키며, 이런 과정에서 계속해서 새로운 의미들을 파생시키는 국면을 보여준다. 더욱이 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』은 그렇게 해석할 수 있는 힘을 공간의 공시적 재구성과 소통의 부재의 소통과 같은 텍스트적 장치와 구조, 그리고 의도를 통해 보여준다.
『소설가 구보씨의 일일』에 나타난 근대적 공간에 대한 구보의 비틀린 인식은 수동적이고 폐쇄적으로 이루어진다. 그의 방랑은 다만 사물을 관찰할 뿐이며, 사물의변혁의 의지로 나아가지 않는다. 대신 권력에의 의지를 계속해서 유보하고, 그와 함께 사물을 방랑 내부의 순환으로 끌어들이는 양상을 보인다. 근대적 공간에 대해 그런 방식으로 이루어지는 구보의 묘사는 그것을 읽는 독자들의 유희적 해석을 초래하며, 그것의 성공적인 관계에서 새로운 공동체를 향한 의지를 가늠할 수 있게 한다. 결국 구보의 수동성과 내부성은 독자의 해석을 촉발하는 요인들이라는 면에서 오히려 텍스트의 의도를 강하게 표출하는 역할을 한다.
이런 측면에서 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』은 다형의 층을 지닌 복합적 텍스트라고말할 수 있다. 그 두드러진 예로, 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』은 근대적 공간에서 필연적으로 발생하는 소통의 부재를 소통시키고자 하는 면을 내보인다. 소통의 부재가 근대적 공간에서 우리가 마주치는 현실이라면, 그 현실 자체를 소통시키고자 하는 것이다. 이런 유희적 해석은 소설가 구보씨의 일일을 궁극적으로 소통의 텍스트라고 규정할 수 있게 해준다.
『소설가 구보씨의 일일』은 또한 근대성에 대한 강력한 비판과 저항의 텍스트로평가할 수 있다. 근대성이 과거를 현재로 끌어들이고 이들을 미래로 연결하는 동질적이고 공허한 시간에 바탕을 둔다면, 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』은 발전적이고 선형적인 시간을 해체하고 모든 사건들을 현재에 일어나는 것으로 통합하는 탈근대적 존재론에 바탕을 둔다. 그러나 여기서 탈근대성은 근대로부터의 탈주라기보다 근대에 대한 일정한 반성이며 근대에 적응하면서 동시에 그를 극복하려는 경향으로 이해되어야 한다. 그렇게 볼 때, 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』은 근대적 공간에 새롭게 반응하면서, 그리고 새로운 수신자의 해석들과 새롭게 관계하면서, 사건처럼 일어나는 텍스트라고 결론을 내릴 수 있다. 바로 그러한 사건의 방식으로 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』은 오디세우스 신화의 길고 반복된 재림을 품으면서 넘어서고, 근대적 공간의 경계를 넘어서면서 또한 그것을 품는 것이다. 이러한 현재적 순환으로 지탱되는 박태원의 문학방식을 공시성의 문학이라고 부르고자 한다.

영어초록

Park Tae-Won's A Day of the Novelist Gubo is a case that the aspect of transfiguration of the myth of Odyssey in the West since Homeros to Dante,Joyce and Levi was resurrected in the space of modern Korean literature of the 1930's. Myth is characterized with coexistence of the two parts: the nature which is invariable regardless of the sociohistorical contexts on the one hand and the nature which is variable according to the sociohistorical contexts on the other. Such property of myth is well realized particularly in the myth of Odyssey insofar as we can interpret it from the aspect of wandering which consists of such motives as the reservation of return of Odyssey and the absence of origin. It is from this perspective that to define the Gubo's wandering as a myth has a special meaning. Gubo's myth of wandering is originated thematically from the myth of Odyssey, and simultaneously continues the variable nature of myth in the language-play-relation with the sociohistorical contexts in which the readers are situated; and in this process, it shows the aspects of proliferating the new meanings incessantly. This kind of interpretation is made possible by highlighting the textual devices of A Day of the Novelist Gubo such as the synchronic reconstruction of modern space and the communication of the absence of communication.
In A Day of the Novelist Gubo, the Gubo's recognition of the modern space is intertwined passively and exclusively so that his wandering is only confined to observing the things, not to be linked to the active will to change the things. In the process in which the will to power is incessantly reserved and therewith the things are included in the inner-circulation of the wandering, the Gubo's description of the modern space invites the readers to the interpretive play, and in their successful relation, helps us examine the will to the new kind of communities. After all the passivity and inclusiveness of Gubo plays the role of operating the textual intention in its power of stirring the readers' interpretations.
In this respect, I would say that A Day of the Novelist Gubo is the complex, multifomed, text. A Day of the Novelist Gubo shows the textual intention to communicate the absence of communication which takes place necessarily in the modern space. If we can accept that the absence of communication is our reality in the modern space, A Day of the Novelist Gubo can be interpreted as to communicate the reality itself. This kind of interpretive play helps define A Day of the Novelist Gubo as the unique text of communication which can exist possibly in the modern space.
A Day of the Novelist Gubo can also be evaluated as the text of resistance to the modernity. Whereas modernity is based on the homogeneous and empty time in which the past, present, and future are interconnected toward a fixed point, A Day of the Novelist Gubo derives from the post-modern ontology in which the progressive and unilinear time is deconstructed and all kinds of events are included in the present time. Reacting to the modern space in such a way, and relating to the readers' new interpretations, A Day of the Novelist Gubo occurs as an event, and further, goes beyond the borderline of modern space and simultaneously includes it, and also includes the long and repeated resurrection of the myth of Odyssey and simultaneously goes beyond it.
