Master Plan of the Memorial Back Garden of Choi’s Old House of Gyodong Village in Gyeongju

초록

The Choi’s family based in Gyeongju Gyodong had raised big money and spent it in a proper way and this wealth had fortunately lasted over 300 years. This family has long been famous for their local contribution in proper allotment of private wealth to local poor people. The old house of Choi’s family is one of the typical yangban class houses of Gyeongsangbuk-do province in the late Joseon Dynasty. The old house of Choi’s family of Gyodong village in Gyeongju is designated as an Important folklore property and is well known as the typical feature of the noble class (yangban) of the Gyeongsangbuk-do province in the late Joseon Dynasty.
From the context, this research was intended to restore, reappear and utilize the traditional garden on the basis of preservation of the current house. It is possible to experience the typical yangban class garden of the Gyeongsangbuk-do province in the late Joseon Dynasty. At the same time, it was to make a noblesse oblige garden in order to educate the social restoration of a fortune, to emphasize the sense of place of the traditional garden and to present the history and social morals of the Choi’s family. The site was divided into three districts such as the old house district, the memorial back garden district and the orchard dis- trict.
The old house district was divided into the inner yard, the men's yard with garden, the servants, yard, the shrine yard with garden and the back yard. The design was intended to restore the Korean traditional garden and revive and use with maintain the present landscape in the old house district. The memorial back garden district has a noblesse oblige garden in order to educate the social restoration of a fortune, to emphasize the sense of place of the traditional house and garden and to display the history and social morals of the Choi’s family. This district is to conserve a zelkova community in the back garden and to empha- size a biborim(裨補林). Main spaces and facilities are the entrance of back garden, the front yard, the middle yard, the main yard, the guest yard, the zelkova yard and the munpha(汶波) memorial garden. The- se are connected to backyard of the old house district. The existing orchards for an apple, pear and persimmon are remained in the orchard district. This district is used as a space for rest, display and performance.
