고학력 지식인 탈북자가 경험하는 심리사회적 현상 (The Psychosocial Phenomenon Experienced by Highly Educated Intellectual North Korean Defectors)

초록

본 연구는 고학력 지식인 탈북자가 경험하는 심리사회적 현상의 본질과 의미를 심층적으로 이해하려는 목적에서 출발했다. 본 연구에 동의한 7명의 참여자들은 북한에서 4년제 대학을 졸업하거나 혹은 그 이상의 교육을 받은 후 북한의 전문 분야에서 경력을 갖춘 자들로 한국에 입국한 이후부터 현재까지 다양한 영역에서 전문가로 활동하고 있다. 2차에 거쳐 진행된 심층인터뷰를 통하여 수집된 자료는 현상학적 질적 연구방법으로 분석했으며, 연구결과는 <고학력 지식인의 탈북동기>, <고학력 지식인 탈북자의 심리사회적 특성>, <고학력 지식인 탈북자의 남북한 사회 경험의 심리적 통합>으로 구분하여 제시했다. 첫째, 본 연구 참여자들의 탈북 동기는 지배이념과 현실 간의 갈등 경험, 생존을 위한 탈북선택으로 드러났다. 둘째, 참여자들이 한국사회에서 경험한 심리적 현상은 망명 후 불확실한 환경에 대한 불안감, 사회활동을 통한 죄책감 방어, 전문영역에서 경험한 사회적 배제, 사회적 관계에서 경험한 소외감, 분단국가라는 환경으로 인한 불안정감, 이상적 세계 추구에 대한 자기한계, 자기 수용을 통한 환경의 수용, 지식의 실천을 통해 확인한 존재감으로 나타났다. 셋째, 참여자들의 남북한 사회 경험의 심리적 통합은 민주적 환경에서 확립한 정체성, 개인적 이익을 초월한 통일의 꿈, 남북통합의 교량 역할 소망으로 나타났다. 그동안 한국사회에서는 북한의 특권계층에 대한 사회적 편견과 제한된 정보로 인해 이들의 삶의 경험과 그 안에 담겨져 있는 이야기는 잘 알려지지 않았다. 본 연구는 참여자들이 소속된 사회적 맥락 안에서 이들이 경험한 심리적 현상과 사회구조적 특징, 그리고 이 둘 간의 상호연관성을 이해하고 드러냄으로써 탈북동기와 탈북계층의 차이, 탈북자들의 개별 특성에 대한 깊은 이해를 필요로 하는 상담분야 및 심리사회적 지원과 관련된 기초자료를 제공하는데 의의가 있다.

영어초록

This paper is rooted in the purpose of gaining a deeper understanding of the meaning and significance of the psychosocial phenomena experienced by highly educated North Korean defectors. The seven participants who agreed to this study have been experts in various fields since entering Korea after having graduated from a four-year university or further education in North Korea. In two rounds of in-depth interviews and the accumulated data were analyzed through phenomenological qualitative method. The results of the research were categorized into ‘motivation of defectors of highly educated intellectuals’, ‘psychosocial characteristics of highly educated intellectual defectors’ and the ‘psychological integration of highly educated intellectuals defectors of North and South Korean society experience. Firstly, First, the participants’ motivation to escape was revealed by the experience of conflict between the ruling ideology and reality, and the choice of defection for survival. Secondly, the psychological phenomena experienced by the participants in the Korean society include anxiety about the uncertain environment after asylum, shielding from guilt through social activities, social exclusion in their respective specialized fields, alienation in social settings, instability from the unique environment of a divided nation, recognizing their limitations while pursuing the ideal society, acceptance of the surrounding environment through self-acceptance, and self-verification through the implementation of knowledge. Thirdly, the psychological integration of participants’ experiences in the two Koreas was revealed by the identity established in a democratic environment, the dream of unification beyond individual gains, and the wish of bridge role of inter - Korean integration. In the meantime, due to social prejudice and limited information, the stories and experiences of North Korean privileged have not been well known into South Korean society. This study is meaningful intending to provide the basic data related to counseling area and psychosocial support which need a deep understanding of the individual characteristics of North Korean refugees, the differences in the motives of defection and the social status of defectors by understanding and revealing the psychological phenomena, the social structural characteristics that the participants experienced in the social context and the inter-relationship between both of them.
