신라고취대 악기 재현을 위한 연구 (Research for the Silla Gochidae Instruments Reconstruction)

초록

이 글은 경주시에서 2015년부터 추진한 신라고취대 재현 사업에서 신라시대의 고취대가 연주했을 악기를 재현하기 위해 재현 가능한 악기의 종류를 연구하기 위해 시도된 것이다. 먼저 1‧2차 때 재현된 악기 현황을 검토했다. 그 결과 담징 1‧담고 1‧담종 1‧중행고 5‧소행고 5‧발 5‧대각 5‧ 나 3‧중각 3‧생 1 이상 10종 30점이 재현되었다. 재현된 악기는 대부분 신라시대 출토유물이나 문헌기록 혹은 유물의 도상 자료에 의거하여 제작된 것에 큰 의미가 있다.
그리고 지금까지 재현한 악기 이외 향후 재현할 악기를 연구한 결과, 첫째 통일신라시대 악기 실물이 출토된 사례로서 요고와 북의 목재 부품이 남아 있었기에 이것의 복원을 제안한다. 이 2종은 모두 타악기로서 고취에 적합하다고 판단된다. 무엇보다 신라인들이 사용한 악기 실물을 근거로 복원 및 재현하는 데 의미가 크다. 특히 요고는 이미 복원된 사례가 있으나, 도상 자료를 충분히 검토하고 활용하여 오늘날 장고 형태의 요고도 재현이 가능하다는 견해를 밝혔다.
둘째, 『삼국사기』 문헌에 기록된 박판(拍板)은 쌍봉사 철감선사 부도와 봉암사 지증대사 부도에 주악상으로 등장하기 때문에 이 역시 재현할 것을 제안한다.
셋째, 관악기 소(簫)는 남원 실상사 백장암 3층석탑과 구례 화엄사 4사자 3층석탑의 소(簫) 주악상에 의거했을 때 신라시대에도 사용되었던 관악기로 판단된다. 또한 소(簫)라는 관악기는 고구려의 고취대와 당(唐)의 고취에 편성되었기 때문에 신라 고취대에서도 편성되었을 가능성이 크다. 따라서 재현할 것을 제안한다. 아울러 신라시대 소의 형태는 고구려나 백제의 소와 달리 직사각형의 구조를 지녔기에 재현 시에 이런 특징을 고려해야 함을 강조하였다.
이상으로 필자는 신라고취대 재현 악기로 타악기 3종인 요고와 북 그리고 박판과 관악기인 소를 재현을 제안한다. 향후 구체적으로 악기 제작에 착수하면, 악기 제작자 및 연주자와 상호 협의하여 제작하는 것이 바람직할 것이다.
신라고취대 재현의 의미는 신라문화와 신라음악에 대한 인식을 새롭게 하는 데 의미가 있다. 신라고취대의 출현 이전에 일반인들은 ‘고취’의 존재조차 알지 못했다. 그러나 경주의 여러 문화행사 때마다 재현된 신라고취대를 접하면서 서서히 고취가 두드리고 부는 군악대라는 것을 인식하게 되었고, 신라시대에도 이런 군악대가 경주에서 이런 모습으로 연주했던 사실을 일반인들도 새롭게 알게 된 것이다.
다음으로 신라시대 악기 재현은 우리나라 고대 악기와 신라 악기에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히는 데 그 의미가 있다. 특히 신라의 악기 발(鈸)과 소(簫)의 재현은 서양 악기 심벌즈 및 팬플룻과 다르지 않다. 근대화 이후 서양문화, 서양음악, 서양악기의 적극적인 보급으로 사장되어 가던 우리 고유의 문화, 우리음악, 우리악기에 대한 인식을 새롭게 하고 이해의 폭을 넓히는 데 의미가 있다.
그리고 무엇보다 신라고취대 재현은 ‘경주시립신라고취대’라는 연주단을 출범하게 하는 큰 성과를 가져왔다. 경주는 신라의 도읍이었고, 국립국악원의 전신인 신라시대 ‘음성서(音聲署)’가 설립된 곳이지만, 지금까지 전통음악을 연주하는 시립단체가 없었다. 늦은 감이 있지만 향후 신라고취대뿐만 아니라 신라 왕실음악의 재현과 신라 제례악의 재현 등도 이 단체가 중심이 되어 추진해 나가길 기대한다.

영어초록

This is the research to sort out the instruments that can be reconstructed for the Silla Gochidae reconstruction project launched by Gyeongju city in 2015. Through the first and second researches, it turned out that 30 instruments were reconstructed; a piece of damjing, damgo, damjong and saeng, 5 pieces of junghaenggo, sohaenggo, bal and deagak, and 3 pieces of na and junggak. The instruments were mostly reconstructed based upon Silla artifacts, historical records and iconography of the relics.
Other than those instruments that have already been reconstructed, among the possible candidates for future reconstruction are yogo and buk, both of which belong to the Unified Silla period and whose wooden copies still exist. Both are percussions, therefore, appropriate for gochi(encouragement). Besides their reconstruction makes sense in terms that they are being reconstructed referring to the original. Yogo has already been restored, but with the further examination on the iconography, it will be possible to reconstruct it into the form of current janggo.
The next candidate can be bakpan recorded in Samguksagi because it appears in the juaksang (music performing figure) of Cheolgamseonsabudo in Ssangbongsa temple and Jizeungdaesabudo in Bongamsa temple.
The last candidate is so(簫). Judging from its appearance in the juaksang of the three-story stone pagoda in Baekjangam and the 4-lion three-story stone pagoda in Hwaeomsa temple, so is considered a pipe instrument used in Silla. In addition, since there are records that so had been used in the gochidae of the Dang dynasty and Goguryeo, it is highly likely that it had been used in the Silla gochidae, too. Therefore, its reconstruction is necessary. However, it should be taken into account in the process of reconstruction that the shape of Silla so is rectangular different from those of Goguryeo and Bakjae.
In conclusion, I suggest that the three kinds of Silla purcussions, yogo, buk and bakpan and a piece of Silla pipe instrument, so, should be reconstructed for the Silla gochidae reconstruction project. When they finally begin to be reconstructed, it will be desirable that it should be carried out in collaboration between instrument makers and performers.
The significance of the reconstruction of Silla gochidae is in renewing the recognition of Silla culture and music. People did not even know the existence of ‘gochi’ before Silla gochidae was made known to the public. However, as they have seen the performances of the reproduced Silla gochidae in various Gyeongju cultural events, they started to perceive that ‘gochi’ is drumming and blowing military music. With the reconstruction of Silla gochidae, people will clearly be able to see how military music in the days of Silla was blaring around in this country.
Another significance of the reconstruction of the Silla instruments is in expanding the horizon of understanding the ancient and Silla instruments. Especially the reconstruction of bal(鈸) and so(簫) will show us that they are not very different from cymbals and pan flute. It will refresh our recognition for our own culture, music and instruments that have been overshadowed by western culture, music and instruments through modernization. As the saying goes, nothing is better in having people believe than seeing.
Moreover, the reconstruction of Silla gochidae brought about the launch of ‘Gyeongju municipal Silla gochidae’. Gyeongju used to be the capital of the Silla dynasty and it was the home of ‘umsungseo(音聲署)’, the national music institute, but the city hasn’t had any official band that performs traditional music ever since. Although it may seem more delayed than desirable, it is expected that this newly established institute will become the center of reconstruction not only for Silla gochidae but also for the Silla royal and ritual music.
