신소설에 나타난 여성인물의 광기 (Insanity of Female Characters in New Novel(Sinsoseol))

초록

본고는 신소설에 등장하는 여성인물의 광기에 주목하여 그 의미를 살펴보았다.
신소설에서 보통 남성인물들의 노정이란 대체로 계몽의 근대를 향해 나가는 출사로 전제되지만 그에 반해 구체적 서사가 빈약하거나 탈각되어 있는 양상으로 허랑방탕한 유람의 성격이 짙다. 이 가운데 신소설의 주 인물은 효와 열이란 구세대적 모티브를 내재한 가정서사를 이끌고 있는 여성인물들이 주동인물로 존재하게 된다.
신소설에 자주 등장하는 남성인물들의 유람모티브는 남성의 계몽에 대한 강박증으로 발현된다. 가정을 완전무결한 질서와 안정의 장소로 이념화하는 신소설의 지향성 가운데 가정이 파괴된 채 집으로 돌아온 여성인물의 경우는 망상 증세를 띠게 된다. 정치적 야욕을 가지고 있었던 작가 이인직의 경우 「혈의누」, 「은세계」에서 구태 정치세력에 저항한 남성인물을 이성적인 숭고한 영웅형으로, 이에 반해 시대적 상황과 마찰하는 내면의 표상으로 여성인물의 광기를 등장시킨다. 자신을 표현할 언어가, 언명이 없었던 어머니들의 광기(망상)는 딸들(옥련,옥순)에게 학업 성취에 대한 책임감을 가져야 할 또 다른 계기를 만들어 주며 근대화의 무대에 여성이 등장할 수 있는 배후 요인으로 기능하게 되는 것이다.
또 한편 신소설은 남성에 대해 무조건적으로 헌신하는 것을 마치 운명적인 것처럼 인식해 왔던 기존의 여성관에 새로운 인간의 모습을 발견하는데 일정부분 기능하였다고 볼 수 있다. 최찬식의 「안의성」, 「능라도」의 경우 미천한 신분이었지만 신교육을 통해 자기성찰 능력을 갖춘 여성인물이 자유연애에 의해 남성과 맺어지나 결국 가정 내 불화로 출분하여 히스테리적 증세를 겪게 된다.
이는 여성을 남성에 대한 타자가 아닌 실존적인 인간으로 본다면, 광기로 규정된 여성인물의 행동을 결코 그들에게 내재되어 있는 동물성이 발현된 것으로만 규정할 수 없다. 오히려 여성의 광기는 억압적인 권력체제로부터 그들이 자신의 정체성을 보호하기 위해 행한 자기 방어적인 행동으로, 그리고 그러한 체제에 공격을 가하는 저항의 몸짓으로 해석할 수 있다. 더 나아가 여성의 광기는 여성에게 적대적인 가부장제 사회에서 자신의 존재가 갖고 있는 의미는 무엇인지, 그리고 과연 "나는 누구인가?"에 대한 질문에 해답을 찾아가는 여정의 기폭제로 볼 수 있겠다. 즉 신소설 속 여성인물들의 광기는 이념과 풍속, 체험과 관념, 욕망과 명분 사이의 괴리에서 발생하는 다양한 불협화음의 표상인 것이다.

영어초록

This study focuses on the dualistic structure and loopholes in Sinsoseol (Korean: literally "new novel") by focusing on insanity of female characters in Sinsoseol.
There are frequent journeys in Sinsoseol. A journey of male character is generally based on the premise of setting out to the modernity of enlightenment, but on the other hand it has a strong tendency of a profligate tour, with poor or no specific narratives. Main characters of Sinsoseol are female characters that lead the narrative of home and family inherent with the old-fashioned motives of filial duty and virtue.
The motif of journey by male characters that frequently appear in Sinsoseol is manifested as their obsession with enlightenment. In the directivity of Sinsoseol that ideologizes home as a place of absolutely perfect order and stability, female characters who returned home with their family destroyed tend to display symptoms of delusion. Korean writer Yi Injik who had political ambitions portrays male characters that resisted to the old political powers as rational and noble heroes in his works 「Tears of Blood (Hyeorui Nu)」 and 「Silver World (Eunsegye)」. On the other hand, he brings into the novels the insanity of female characters as internalized emotions that are in conflict with the periodical situation. The insanity (delusion) of mothers without language or statement to express themselves resulted in another opportunity for their daughters (Okryeon, Oksoon) to be responsible for their academic achievement, which acts as an additional factor for women to make an appearance in the arena of modernization.
Moreover, Sinsoseol also played a certain role in discovering a new human aspect from the conventional view of women that had perceived unconditional devotion to men as fate. Choi Chansik's 「The Sound of a Wild Goose (Anuisung)」 and 「Rungrado」 portray female characters with a lowly status who obtains self-examination ability through new education get involved with a man through free love but end up running away due to family trouble and experiencing symptoms of hysteria. Seeing women as not the others from men but as existential human beings, this behavior defined as insanity cannot be explained merely as a manifestation of their inherent brutality. Rather, women's insanity can be interpreted as a self-defensive behavior to protect their identity from the suppressive power system, and a gesture of resistance that fights against such system. Furthermore, women's insanity may be the "superior spirit" that seeks answers to the questions of what their existence means and who they are in the patriarchal society that is hostile toward women.
