신즉물주의 사진에 대한 발터 벤야민의 비판 (Walter Benjamin's Criticism on Photography of ‘New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit)’)

초록

벤야민은 동시대 예술에 대해 많은 비평을 남기고 있다.
그 가운데서도 알베르트 랭거파츠와 신즉물주의의 선언라고도일컫는 그의 사진집 『세계는 아름답다』에 대한 비평은 주목을끈다. 신즉물주의 사진은 다양한 기법을 구사함으로써 회화적이미지의 획득을 목표로 삼는 종래의 예술사진을 부정하고, 카메라 본래의 기능인 렌즈의 특성을 살린 정밀하고도 객관적인대상묘사를 추구함으로써, 인간이 눈으로는 포착할 수 없는 세계에 대한 새로운 모습의 획득을 목표로 삼았다.
이러한 신즉물주의 경향은 언뜻 보기에 벤야민이 복제기술인 사진술에서 찾아낸 사물의 탈(脫)아우라라고 하는 새로운가능성과 통하는 것처럼 여겨지기도 한다. 그렇다면 벤야민은왜 랭거파츠를 계속 비판했을까? 벤야민이 랭거파츠의 사진에서 자신이 생각하고 있었던 사진의 실제적인 측면과는 다른 무엇을 발견했을까? 이것이 본 논문의 주제이다. 여기에서는 특히벤야민의 복제기술론에서 제시한 핵심개념인 ‘아우라’라고 하는관점으로부터 이 문제를 살펴보고자 한다.
180 현대미술학 논문집 제17권 2호 2013벤야민에 따르면, 피사체를 무차별적으로 미화하여 유행하는 양식에 영합하는 랭거파츠의 사진은 대상을 단순한 기분전환을 위한 소비물로 바꾸고 거기로부터 정치적인 의미를 빼앗아간다. 벤야민은 그러한 신즉물주의 사진 경향이 파시즘 정치의심미주의가 초래하는 위험성과도 통한다고 생각하였다. 본 논문에서는 랭거파츠의 사진을 분석함으로써, 왜 그의 사진이 복제기술에 의해 한때 잃어버렸던 아우라를 날조하는지, 또 그 날조된 아우라의 본질은 무엇인지를 고찰하고자 한다.

영어초록

Walter Benjamin was very active in art criticism during his own life. Especially, he constantly criticized on the photography collection The World is Beautiful (1928) of Albert Renger-Patzsch, which is considered as the manifesto of ‘New Objectivity’(Neue Sachlichkeit). This New Objectivity movement seems to coincide with the new technical possibility of photographic art. Because photography has the destructive power to pick up the unknown element from the known element by exposing the details and moments which exist beyond our usual perception. The purpose of this paper is to illuminate why Benjamin criticized the photography of Renger- Patzsch from the viewpoint of the concept of aura.
One hundred kinds of things in The World is Beautiful, which are taken photography in the newest style of beauty, become to be organized into the ‘world’. They don't ask there what each individual thing means, and what the world means that those things belong. Things there are merely beautiful and the whole of beautiful things is no other than world. New objectivity photography doesn't make clear the meaning of the world. It removes the political meaning from the reality of life and changes the actuality into the object for aesthetic enjoyment. Benjamin read through the danger of political aestheticism of Fascism that is shown in the mode of photography as commodity, as advertised in the phrase “The world is beautiful”.
Benjamin distinguished two kinds of aura, namely the aura of work of art and that of commodity, and gave negative assessment to the latter. Many previous studies explained that the former has been taken as authentic while the latter as fake. And it has been insisted that there remains no authentic aura after the ‘decay of aura’. However, in this paper, I interpret aura as having broader implications, that is to say, as a reactivation of mythic power of objects by empathy. I argue that aura was interrupted by the shock of the invention of reproductive technology, and through this shock, was transformed from that of work of art to that of commodity that retain its mythic power. The aura of Renger-Patzsch's photography depends exactly on this mythic power transmitted to the world of commodity.
