19세기 전반 의궤 반차도의 신경향 (The Characteristics of Uigwe Banchado in the Early Nineteenth Century)

초록

조선시대 기록화의 하나인 반차도는 보통 前例에 따라 제작되었으므로 도식적이고 보수적인경향을 강하게 보였다. 19세기 전반은 왕권 약화와 세도 가문의 정국 주도, 사회적 모순 심화로 특징지어지는 시기이다. 하지만 이 시기 반차도는 전체 의궤 반차도의 역사에서 행렬이 가장 장대해지며 조형적인 완성도와 사실성, 세련미 면에서도 가장 뛰어난 수준을 보인다. 본고에서는 이들 특징이 이 시기 왕실의례의 성격 및 궁중회화 상황의 소산임을 밝히고자 하였다. 이 작업은 의궤 반차도를 통해 이 시기 기록화에서 이루어진 성과를 확인하는 작업으로서 의의가 있다.
먼저, 순조가 존왕적 예학 전통을 따라 왕실 흉례를 성대히 거행하는 과정에서 흉례 관련 반차도들이 특별히 제작되었다. 조모인 혜빈 홍씨의 襄禮, 생모이자 후궁인 수빈 박씨 등 왕실 어른과효명세자 예장에서 제작된 관원용 분아반차도와 사묘에 이들의 신주를 모시는 반차도들은 순조의강력한 의지 아래 제작된 것들이다. 다음으로, 18세기와는 달리 가례에서 어린 왕의 친영 행렬에대규모 시위군이 동원되어 위의를 드러내었고, 반차도에서 시위군 행렬이 시각화됨에 따라 행렬의길이가 늘어났다. 마지막으로, 왕실의 연향에서는 국왕 시위와 정재 및 음악 관련 사항을 시대에 맞게 시각화한 새로운 행사 계획도로서 문반차도가 제작되었다. 연향 의궤의 문반차도는 19세기 왕실 연향의 중요성을 잘 보여주며 이후 연향의 규범이 되었다는 데 의의가 있다.
한편 19세기 전반 의궤 반차도의 화풍은 1830년을 기점으로 새로운 경향을 보인다. 각종 수레와 가마를 사람과 함께 일체형으로 제작한 인각과 이전에는 손으로 그려졌던 깃발 인각 등이 대폭늘어나고, 명료한 이목구비와 윤곽선, 풍성한 소매와 옷자락, 자연스러운 동작을 보이는 다양한 인물들이 등장하며, 정확하게 계화로 작도된 神輦이 선보인다. 도식적이던 기존 의궤 반차도 화풍을일변시킨 원인을 19세기 전반 궁중회화 상황과 관련지어 파악하였다. 이 시기 왕실의례에서 중요비중을 차지한 연향 의궤의 목판인쇄 작업 이후 일체형 인각의 활용도가 높아졌고, 수많은 인원이등장하는 궁중 연향도와 각종 길상적 화제의 그림 작업을 규장각 차비대령화원들이 주도하면서 畵 員 전반의 인물 조형력이 향상된 것으로 추론하였다. 또한 대규모 궁궐 역사와 궁궐도 제작 과정에서 향상된 화원들의 계화 역량이 사실적이고 현장감 넘치는 신련 인각 제작으로 이어진 것으로 파악하였다.

영어초록

As a documentary painting from the Joseon Dynasty, Banchado (rank-positioned procession painting) reveals a strongly schematic and conservative tendency as it was generally produced in accordance with preceding traditions. In the early nineteenth century, the Joseon Dynasty can be characterized by weakened royal authority, political domination by influential families, and intensified social injustices. However, Banchado produced during this period features the grandest procession in the entire history of Uigwe Banchado (Banchado included in Uigwe, Records of the State Rites) and the highest level of compositional completeness, precision and refinement. This article aims to highlight the notion that such characteristics are resulted from the distinct nature of royal rites and the royal paintings during this period.
Firstly, the reign of King Sunjo saw the arrangement of royal funeral ceremonies on a grand scale according to royalist ritual traditions. It resulted in the special production of a number of Banchado depicting funeral ceremonies. Sunjo’s strong determination played a pivotal role in the creation of the series of Buna Banchado (official Banchado used as a practice manual). Including the Buna Banchado produced during the funerals of King Sunjo’ s grandmother Lady Hyegyeong, the Buna Banchado for the funerals of his own mother and royal concubine Lady Park, and Prince Hyomyeong are produced on a large scale. And also Banchado depicting the procession for placing royal mortuary tablets at shrines were produced on a similar scale. Secondly, unlike the auspicious ceremonies in the eighteenth century, the royal wedding procession for the young king was accompanied by a large detachment of royal guards to demonstrate the prominence of royal authority. It added to the length of the procession in compliance with the greater number of royal guards. Lastly, Munbanchado (a written Banchado in the format of a rank-positioned chart) was newly produced for court banquets as an event plan that visualized the elements related to escorting the king, court entertainment, and musical accompaniment according to the demand of the era. MunBanchado in Uigwe for court banquets have significance in the way that it aptly demonstrates the importance of nineteenth century court banquets and served to establish norms for subsequent court banquets.
The painting style of Uigwe Banchado in the early nineteenth century began to develop a new trend. It’s turning point was 1830. From then on, we can see considerably larger number of figures that is painted by woodblock prints depicting figures of people along with a variety of carts, palanquins and flags in the Banchado. And also we can see a number of people with clear facial profiles and contours, elaborate sleeve and hem details, featured natural physical gestures and carts carrying mortuary tablets accurately drawn in the form of a ruled-line painting in the Banchado. The causes behind the drastic transition of the existing schematic painting style of Uigwe Banchado were examined in relation to the circumstances surrounding court paintings in the early nineteenth century. Following the wood-block printing of Uigwe for court banquets, which was crucial to court rites at that time, small wooden monoblock prints began to be used more frequently. Court painters on temporary transfer at Kyujanggak took the lead in drawing court banquet paintings that features multitudinous people. This circumatance can reflect on the advance of overall ability of the court painters to illustrate human figures. Also, court painters’ skill in drawing ruled-line paintings increased in the course of constructing large-scale palace buildings. A high level of achievement required in producing large screen paintings of palace buildings seems to have led to a high degree of realism in wood carvings of funeral carts.
