Modern societies have faced a impending danger of losing the funeral systemfor obliterating a sense of tremendous loss which death brings on to us. Death is one of themost extreme cases of disclosing the fragility of human beings. Therefore,mortals have invented a ritual mechanics for neutralizing the pure shock of death. Original structure ofmortuary rituals shows to us that human beings have struggle to translate death into rebirth by extracting the soul from the remains of human body.
We should pay attention to the funerary function of soul. For this purpose,we depend entirely on the very influential analysis which Robert Hertz contributes to the study of funeral system. Hertz divides the funereal process into two distinct stages, which are respectively called first funeral and second funeral. First funeral is concerned both with completely removing the putrefying flesh andwithmaking corpse into desiccated bones. Second funeral consists in transferring human souls, ritually made, to the society of the dead.
Double funeral changes death into one node among a series of cycles. The Object of funeral systemis not to bury corpse but to annihilate death itself. Especially, funeral provides for us the excellent chance for experiential education of death. Participants in funeral feel the closest presence of death in dealingwith corpse, and preempt their own deaths. Therefore, the deconstruction and simplification of funeral system eventually leads to the crisis of death, which is accelerated by the impossibility of manufacturing soul.
