백두산 관련 구비전승 설화의 신화적 성격 -이주민 화자 구술 자료를 중심으로- (Mythological Characteristics of Oral Legends Related to Mountain Baekdu)

초록

본 연구에서는 중국 흑룡강성 출신의 결혼 이주민 화자가 구술한 백두산 관련 설화에 대하여 그 신화적 성격과 의의를 고찰했다. 직접 현지조사를 통해 수집한 자료를 대상으로 삼은 논의였다. 해당 설화들은 제보자가 1930~50년대에 연변 지역에서 살면서 현지 설화를 체득한 외조모로부터 전해들은 것들로, 내용이 새로울뿐더러 서사적 다양성과 충실성을 잘 갖추고 있는 양질의 자료다.
먼저 주목한 것은 신자료인 백두산 생성 내력담이다. 이 설화는 태초의 혼돈 상황에서 거대한 용의 준동으로 백두산이 생겨난 내력을 전하는 것으로 창세신화적 면모를 함유하고 있다. 용의 움직임에 의한 우주의 격동과 그 뒤를 이은 천신과의 투쟁, 쇠사슬로 묶인 상태로 천 년에 걸쳐 산이 되는 과정 등은 한국의 여느 창세신화에서 보기 어려운 원시적 역동성을 특징으로 한다. 백두산의 위상과 성격에 어울리는 특별한 신화적 이미지다.
이번 현지조사를 통해 네 가지 버전의 천지 생성 유래담이 확인되었다. 천지와 하늘[天]의 시원적인 연결성을 전하는 한 편의 설화 외에 흑룡과의 투쟁 과정에서의 천지 생성 내력을 전하는 세 종류의 설화를 채록할 수 있었다. 자료 발굴 차원에서 새롭고 놀라운 성과다. 이와 별도로 흑사에 맞선 천지수 수호 투쟁을 전하는 한 편의 길고 흥미로운 설화가 채록되었다. 천지에 얽힌 투쟁 서사의 중핵을 이루는 흑룡은 그 신격을 화산신 내지 지하신으로 풀이할 수 있으며, 흑사 또한 땅[地]의 부정적 기운의 서사적 표상으로 볼 수 있다. 이들은 백두산 지역의 극악한 자연환경을 반영하는 동시에 그와 정면으로 맞서서 삶을 개척해온 역사를 생생히 함축한다.
백두산 설화의 중핵을 이루는 투쟁 서사와 관련해서 그것이 천(天)과 인(人)의 연합에 의한 지(地)와의 대결을 기본 대립구도로 삼는다는 점을 주목할 만하다. 한국신화에서 흔히 볼 수 있는바 천과 지의 조화 내지 통합과는 다른 서사적 구도다. 일부 백두산 설화는 지(地)가 독을 지니는 것으로 사유하는데, 그것을 풀어내는 힘을 가진 것은 하늘에서 내리는 물이다. 천(天)과 수(水)의 긴밀한 연결성은 백두산 설화의 특징적 사유로서, 천지(天池)는 그 핵심 표상이 된다. 한편, 이번에 수집된 백두산 설화들의 투쟁 서사에서는 여성의 주도적이고 적극적인 역할이 부각되는 것이 특징이다. 여성이 보조자를 넘어서 투쟁의 핵심 주체로 나서곤 한다. 주목할 것은 그 여성이 천(天)과 깊은 연결성을 지닌다는 점이다. 천남지녀가 아닌 천녀지남(天女地男)의 구도를 특징적으로 확인할 수 있다. 이는 한국의 신화적 서사에서 쉽게 볼 수 없는 것으로, 한국인의 신화적 사유체계에 대한 이해를 새롭게 하는 것으로서 의의를 지닌다.

영어초록

In this study, I examined the mythological nature and significance of the folklore related to Mountain Baekdu as recounted by immigrants from China. The discussion was based on data collected through direct fieldwork. These folk tales were transmitted from the informants’ grandmothers, who acquired local folk tales while living in the Yanbian area during the 1930s to 1950s. Not only are these tales novel in content, but they also exhibit narrative diversity and fidelity.
One of the primary focuses is the newly discovered legend of the creation of Mountain Baekdu. This tale recounts the origin of Mountain Baekdu from the chaos of primordial times due to the stirring of a giant dragon, embodying aspects of a creation myth. The cosmic turmoil caused by the dragon’s movement, the ensuing struggle with celestial beings, and the process of becoming a mountain while bound by chains characterize a primitive dynamism rarely seen in other Korean creation myths. This presents a mythological image that befits the stature and character of Mountain Baekdu.
Through this fieldwork, four versions of the cosmogonic legends of Heavenly Pond(Cheonji) were collected. One tale conveys the primordial connection between heaven and the Heavenly Pond, while the other three describe the creation of the Heavenly Pond during the struggle with the Black Dragon. This is a remarkable achievement in terms of data excavation. Additionally, a long and intriguing tale depicting the struggle to defend the earth against the Black Snake was separately recorded. The Black Dragon, central to the narrative of the struggle intertwined with the Heavenly Pond, can be interpreted as a divine being representing either a volcano god or an underground deity, while the Black Snake can be seen as a narrative symbol of the earth’s negative energy. These tales vividly encapsulate the harsh natural environment of the Mountain Baekdu region and the history of confronting it head-on to pioneer life.
The central narrative of struggle in Mountain Baekdu legends is noteworthy, taking the confrontation between heaven and earth, orchestrated by the alliance of heaven and humans, as its fundamental oppositional framework. This narrative structure differs from the harmony or integration of heaven and earth commonly found in Korean mythology. Some Mountain Baekdu legends attribute the venomous aspect of earth to be counteracted by the power of water descending from heaven. The close connection between heaven and water serves as a characteristic reasoning in Mountain Baekdu folklore, with the Heavenly Pond becoming its central symbol.
Furthermore, in the struggle narratives collected in this study, the proactive and assertive role of women is highlighted. Women often emerge not just as assistants but as central figures in the struggle. It is notable that these women are deeply connected to heaven. This characteristic confirms a narrative structure of “heavenly woman and earthly man” rather than the more commonly observed “heavenly man and earthly woman.” This unique aspect offers a fresh understanding of the Korean mythological reasoning system.
