초록

Inheritance of a small family business has been an issue due to a generation shift caused by an aging population. However, not much research has been conducted to explore the inheritance of family business in the field of traditional markets, especially in local cities in Korea.
Therefore, this study investigated the situation of small family business successions in the Korean local city’s traditional marketplace and tried to find new measures to support its inheritance. A major research site was Donghae Jungang Traditional Market, and a questionnaire was the main data collection method. The survey questions consisted of participants’ perceptions toward family business succession, problems during the succession process, reasons for not choosing successors, reasons for closing businesses, the duration of maintaining businesses in the future, etc.
This study found that inheritance of the family business was not active. The reasons were as follows: 1) Small businesses in the field of traditional markets have had problems establishing a stable management and economic growth before the inheritance of a family business, 2) Launching a new business was more popular than inheriting a family business.
Current governmental support for business, however, usually only occurs at the time of inheriting the business and is suitable for big business in terms of education and taxation and discouraging succession in the field of traditional markets. Therefore, we proposed new measures to support the succession in the field of traditional markets as follows. We need to support not only the time of inheriting the business, but also a stable management and economic growth for a long period of time. However, this support aims at inheriting the business, so, before providing economic and managerial support, we need to confirm the succession itself. It is better to decide which business to support based on its contribution to traditional markets and the local city.
