장애인을 위한 치유환경으로서의 미술관 사례조사 연구 : 미국 넬슨-엣킨스 미술관 사례를 중심으로 (A Case Study of Art Museums as Healing Environments for People with Disabilities: Based on the Case of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, USA)

초록

현대의 미술관은 고유의 기능으로서 예술 작품감상과 보존만이 아닌 치유의 기능으로서 그 범위를 넓혀가고 있다. 미술관은 환경적 측면과 다양한 프로그램, 그리고 정신적 안정과 심리적 돌봄을 제공할 수 있는 서비스 방식으로 관람객들에게 충분한 치유적인 가치를 지닌다. 신체적·정신적 제약으로 인해 사회적 고립을 경험하고 있는 장애인들의 사회적 통합 및 심리를 반영한 치유환경 제공은 사회적으로 반드시 고려되어야 할 것이다. 이에 본 연구는 장애인을 위한 미술관의 치유적 함의에 대하여 알아보고, 장애인에 관한 정책과 연구, 미술관 교육프로그램이 활성화가 된 미국의 미술관을 조사 대상으로 하여 미술관 홈페이지와 담당자 인터뷰를 기반으로 한 조사로 미술관의 장애인을 위한 치유환경 사례를 수집하였다. 그 결과, 넬슨-앳킨스 미술관에서는 감각 민감성이 있는 아동과 가족을 위한 감각 친화적 환경 세팅의 전시 관람 이벤트, 장애 특성별, 연령 별 투어, 교육프로그램과 축제 운영, 지역기관과 연계된 협업 프로그램 등이 다양한 형태로 진행될 뿐 아니라 장애인 가족, 장애 예술가, 유관기관 관계자 등의 사회적 교류의 장소로 사회적 상호작용을 촉진하는 역할을 한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 이용자의 특성을 배려한 치유적 공간과 장애 유형별 의사소통 보조 도구 및 인력을 적절히 제공하고 있으며, 프로그램 운영자들에게는 다양성, 형평성, 포용성 및 접근성에 대해 구체적인 매뉴얼과 지속적인 교육을 진행하며 발전시키고 있었다. 그동안 우리나라에 소개된 국내외 미술관 프로그램은 장애인 예술교육을 중심으로 한 연구가 다수였다. 따라서 본 연구는 미술치료사인 연구자의 관점으로 장애인 예술교육을 포함한 치유 환경적 측면의 미술관의 사회적 기능의 가능성과 방향을 탐색하고 아이디어를 제공하는데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Modern art museums are expanding their scope beyond viewing and preserving works of art as their primary function to include healing. Art museums have sufficient therapeutic value for visitors through their environmental aspects, various programs and services that can provide mental stability and psychological care. Providing a healing environment that reflects the social integration and psychology of people with disabilities who experience social isolation due to physical and mental limitations must be considered by society. This study aims to discover a museum's healing functions by examining the American Museum of Art, which has established national policies and researches for people with disabilities. I collected examples of healing environments for people with disabilites at museums through research based on the museum website and interviews with staves. Findings showed that the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art not only provided displays in sensory-friendly environmental settings for children with hypersensitivity and their families, and operating docent tours customized by types of disabilities, ages, educational programs, festivals, and cooperative programs with local communities, but also served a role in activating interactions for people with disabilities, their family members and relatives, the artists with disabilities, and related organization officials by hosting social gatherings. Also, the museum provided therapeutic spaces that take into account the characteristics of visitors, as well as communication aids and personnel for each type of disabilities. Program organizers also get steadly trained, develop detailed manuals for diversity, fairness, acceptance, and accessibility for those with disabilities, and keep them updated according to the research. So far, many of the domestic and foreign art museum programs introduced to Korea have focused on art education for the disabled. Therefore, from the perspective of the researcher as an art therapist, this study will be able to contribute to exploration of the possibility of the social function of art museums and providing ideas in terms of a healing environment, including art education for the disabled.
