미국 윌로우스 한인비행가양성소 건물의 역사 및 건축적 고증에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Historical and Architectural Investigation of the Korean Aviation School Building in Glenn County, United States)

초록

윌로우스 한인비행가양성소(韓人飛行家養成所)는 대한민국 임시정부 군무총장 노백린(盧伯麟)과 재미 실업가 김종림(金宗林) 등이 주도하여 1920년 7월 5일에 미국 캘리포니아주 글렌 카운티(Glenn County)에 설립한 최초의 재미 한인 비행교육 기관으로 알려져 있다. 본 연구는 퀸트 학교가 1920년 2월경에 한인비행학교(韓人飛行學校)에 임대한 교사의 이건 여부에 관한 실증적 고찰로써, 한인비행가양성소의 운영이 잠정적으로 중단된 1921년 4~6월 이후 이건 된 것으로 추정되는 글렌 카운티 874번 필지에 소재한 건물의 역사적 온전성을 평가하고 두 건물의 동일성에 관한 사실 규명을 목적으로 한다.
본 연구는 3차례의 현지 조사를 수행하여 한인비행가양성소가 임대했던 퀸트 학교(Quint School)가 설립된 1914년부터 조사 건물이 소재한 874번 필지가 현 소유주에게 상속된 1963년까지 발생한 주요 사건을 입증할 사료의 수집, 관련자 면담, 건축 조사를 시행했다. 퀸트 교사와 조사 건물 간 역사적, 사회적, 건축적 연관성을 다각적으로 분석하여 도출된 조사 건물의 역사적 온전성(穩全性)에 관한 본 연구의 최종 평가는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 한인비행가양성소가 임대한 퀸트 학교가 최초 설립된 위치는 글렌 카운티 90번 지구 내 1043번 부지의 북동쪽에 있는 17번 필지(Lot 17 of Lot 1043 of Section 90)이다. 둘째, 1918년부터 조사 건물이 소재한 874번 필지에 정착한 베나마티 가(家)는 퀸트 지구(Quint District)의 이사회 임원(Board of Trustees)으로 학교의 설립, 운영, 폐교 후 매각 과정에 적극적으로 관여했으며, 조사 건물이 현 소재지인 874번 필지의 실질적인 자산으로 편입된 시기는 1923 이후부터 1928년 4월 9일 사이로 추정된다. 셋째, 1920년에 당시 퀸트 교사와 조사 건물의 건축적 특징을 비교한 결과, 변화된 건물의 위치(location) 및 주변 환경(setting)을 제외하고, 역사적 연관성(association), 건물의 건축기법(design), 건설 재료(material), 세부 구조와 장식에 적용된 공예술(workmanship), 이건 후 변형 이후에도 유지되고 있는 원형적 정서(feeling)를 종합적으로 고려할 때, 두 건물은 동일한 것으로 판단된다.
본 연구를 통해 확인된 결과를 종합해 볼 때, 글렌 카운티 874번 필지에 소재한 건물은 퀸트 학교가 최초 설립되었던 글렌 카운티 1043 부지에서 현 위치로 이건 후 교사에서 살림집으로 개조된 것으로 보는 것이 타당하며, 한인비행가양성소가 임대할 당시 퀸트 교사의 모습을 파악할 수 있는 수준의 역사적 온전성을 충분히 유지하고 있다고 평가할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study is an empirical review aiming to verify the historical and architectural identity of the building on lot 874 in Glenn County, which is presumed to be the Quint schoolhouse rented by the Korean Aviation School (KAS) in 1920-1921. Led by Roh, Baek-rin, the military secretary of the Korean Provisional Government, and Kim, Chong-lim, a successful rice farmer and businessman in Colusa County, KAS is known as the first Korean flying educational institution established near the town of Willows in Glenn County, California in July 5, 1920. Founded as a grammar school for Italian Immigrants, the Quint school lasted until 1919, and its vacant schoolhouse later served as one of the KAS training buildings until it unexpectedly closed between April and June 1921 due to the lack of operating budget.
To figure out historical events relevant to the survey building from the year of the establishment of the Quint school in 1914 until the current owner inherited and has managed Lot 874 from Frank Benamati, an original property owner, since 1963, this study evaluated the historical integrity of the building based on the research and surveys of historical records, oral histories from local stakeholders, and architectural information through the three field surveys in 2021. With a multi-faceted analysis of the historical, social, and architectural relationships between the Quint schoolhouse and the survey building, the final results of this study are as follows.
First, the Quint schoolhouse, rented by the KAS, was built northeast of lot 1043 in Glenn County. Second, two members of the Benamati family, who settled at lot 874 of Glenn County in 1918, were on the Board of Trustees of the Quint District, actively participating in the opening, operation, and post-closing sale process of the lot 17 of lot 1043 where Quint Schoolhouse was built. This study also revealed that the survey building was incorporated into the Benamati family’s property between 1923 and April 1928. Third, except for the original location and setting of the building, the Quint schoolhouse in 1920 is identical to the building on lot 874 based on the architectural observation of its close association with the family history of the current owner, the same building design (one-room schoolhouse) with minor changes of structural and decorative features, construction materials of the same kind, the same level of workmanship among the architectural details of both buildings, and feeling of the prototype of a schoolhouse with moderate modification of its interior layout into a single-family residence.
Considering that the historical integrity is still intact to deliver the authentic sense of the Quint schoolhouse rented by KAS in 1920, this study concluded that the building on lot 874 is the same as the Quint schoolhouse founded on the lot 1043 in 1914.
