초록

본 연구는 ‘김치 앤 칩스(Kimchi & Chips)’의 미디어아트 설치작품 헤일로(Halo, 2018)를 통해 인간-기술-자연의 관계를 탐구한다. 런던 소머셋 하우스(Somerset House) 의 의뢰로 설치된 헤일로는 99개의 헬리오스탯(heliostats)이 태양을 추적하며 반사한 빛과 미스트 분사 장치가 뿜어내는 수증기가 상호작용하여 공중에 원형 패턴을 형성 하는 작품이다. 헤일로는 인간 작가의 설계, 인공지능 기반 기술 시스템, 그리고 자연 요소가 유기적으로 결합해 작동하며, 보이지 않았던 자연의 능동적 역할을 드러낸다. 본 연구의 목적은 인공지능 시대에 대두되는 환경적, 기술적 도전 과제에 대한 대응책 으로 인간 중심이나 인간-기술의 관점을 넘어, 자연을 포함하는 관계를 인식하고 재구 성하는 중요성을 제시하는 데 있다. 본 연구는 헤일로의 관계 구조를 ‘인간과 기술’, ‘기술과 자연’으로 분리하여 각 요소의 개별적인 역할과 관계적 특성을 체계적으로 분 석한다. 이를 위해 유기체와 환경의 상호작용을 설명하는 움벨트(Umwelt) 이론과 분산된 인지체계를 형성하는 인지적 집합체(cognitive assemblage) 개념을 적용하였다. 이어, 행위자-네트워크 이론(ANT)을 활용하여 ‘인간-기술-자연’간의 관계망을 분석하고, 자 연을 포함한 네트워크 구성의 함의를 도출하였다.

영어초록

This study explores the relationships among humans, technology, and nature through the media art installation Halo (2018) by Kimchi & Chips. Commissioned by Somerset House in London, Halo consists of 99 heliostats that track and reflect sunlight, interacting with a mist dispersion system to create a circular pattern suspended in mid-air. The work integrates the human artist’s design, AI-driven technological systems, and natural elements into a cohesive operation, revealing the previously unseen active role of nature.
The purpose of this study is to propose the importance of recognizing and reconstructing relationships that include nature, as a response to the environmental and technological challenges of the AI era. Moving beyond human-centered or human-technology perspectives, the study systematically examines the integration of humans, technology, and nature by analyzing the relational structure of Halo in two dimensions: “human-technology” and “technology-nature.” This analysis highlights the distinct roles and relational dynamics of each element.
The study applies the theoretical frameworks of Umwelt, which describes organism-environment interactions, and cognitive assemblages, which explain distributed cognitive systems. Furthermore, it employs the concept of actor-network theory (ANT) to analyze the relational interactions among humans, technology, and nature, deriving implications for including nature as an active participant in networked systems.
This research emphasizes the necessity of adopting a new relational perspective that incorporates nature, offering insights into the reconfiguration of relationships to address contemporary challenges. By demonstrating theinterconnectedness of humans, technology, and nature, Halo provides valuable perspectives on how these relationships can be reimagined and restructured in an AI-driven world.
