저소득층 유아들의 숲유치원 경험의 의미 탐색 (An exploration of the meaning forest kindergarten experiences provide for children from low-income families)

초록

본 연구는 최근 유아교육 분야에서 주목받고 있는 숲유치원을 저소득층 유아들에게 경험하게 함으로써 숲유치원 경험이 저소득층 유아들에게 어떤 교육적 의미가 있는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 저소득층 유아들은 빈곤으로 인한 각종 환경적 결손에 노출되어 있어 발달에 있어서도 취약점을 보인다는 기존의 연구결과들을 토대로, 다양한 교육적 경험을 할 수 있는 기회의 제공이 절실함을 알 수 있다. 이를 반영하여 2011년 3월 30일부터 12월 28일까지 매주 1회 숲유치원 프로그램을 실시하고 있는 A유치원을 참여관찰하고, 원장, 교사, 숲해설가를 대상으로 면담을 실시하여 숲유치원 경험이 저소득층 유아들에게 주는 의미를 밝히고자 하였다. 이러한 저소득층 유아들의 숲유치원 경험은 첫째, 두려움을 극복하고 자신감 있는 유아로 성장하게 하고, 둘째, 공격적인 모습에서 긍정적인 친구관계를 맺는 유아로 성장시키고, 셋째, 생명사랑 경험을 통해 책임감 강한 유아로 성장시키고, 넷째, 풍부한 자연환경 속에서 여유와 나눔을 실천하는 유아로 변화시키고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 숲유치원 경험이 사회⋅정서적인 결손을 갖고 있는 저소득층 유아들에게 의미가 있음을 알게 해 주는 것으로, 앞으로 저소득층 유아를 위한 숲유치원 경험을 확대⋅지원하여 빈곤으로 인한 사회적 문제를 해결하는 데 이바지할 수 있기를 기대해 본다.

영어초록

Though still a rarity throughout the world, forest kindergartens, that is kindergartens conducted in nature without ceilings or walls, are gaining more and more interest as a means to counteract the debilitating mental and physical effects of urbanization and industrialization, especially for the poor. This study explores the meaning of a forest kindergarten experience for children from low-income families in South Korea. Research methodology includes participatory observations at a kindergarten implementing a forest kindergarten program once per week from March 30th to December 28th, 2011 and interviews with the director, teachers, and the forest narrator. All the children in this forest kindergarten are from low-income families. Analyses of the data obtained are the following. First, Forest Kindergarten experiences were found to help children overcome fear and thus, grow with confidence. Second, those children who exhibited tendencies to be aggressive, were able to develop positive relationships with peers. Third, the experience of loving life fostered a growing sense of responsibility in the children. Fourth, the children adapted to practicing tolerance of others and to sharing within the ample natural environment. In conclusion, this study finds that forest kindergarten experiences can serve as intervention and prevention measures for countering some of the debilitating effects of poverty on the social and emotional development of young children. Thus, forest kindergartens should be encouraged and supported. As well, their principles and practices should be extended and supported well beyond the kindergarten years.
