Judging from the marriage relationship of Heo Gong, the father of Queen Sunbi, and his children, his family was one of the most prestigious families of the time.
Heo Gong was a son of King Hyeonjong’s daughter, or a relative of the royal family.
In addition, Heo Gong was dispatched as an envoy to the Yuan Dynasty, and his son, Heo Pyeong (Heo Sung), had the experience of being held hostage (Dongnohwa in Korean) by the Yuan Dynasty. This suggests that his family had many experiences in diplomacy with the Yuan Dynasty. Thus, King Chungseon intended, through marriage to Queen Sunbi, to incorporate Heo Gong’s family to strengthen his royal authority.
For example, Heo Jong, a nephew of Queen Sunbi, who played a certain role in the marriage of King Chungseon and Queen Sunbi, was appointed as the head of the Office of Inspector General at the beginning of King Chungseon’s reinstatement to the throne. He also, as the inspector for officials, led the political reorganization for King Chungseon.
Queen Sunbi’s relatives, through her marriage, became King Chungseon’s political supporters, which played a role in turning the domestic political forces into his supporters.
Her relatives, including Heo Gong, were already an existing powerful family at that time. For example, Kim Ryun, a son of Heo Gong’s daughter and a nephew of Queen Sunbi, revealed a community consciousness by moving with his mother’s relatives in the event of an emergency such as evacuation, and also showed a strong sense of family by remembering the career in government of his mother’s father, Heo Gong, and referring to him as ‘MunGyung-Gong of my family’.
In addition, King Chungseon needed the power of Queen Sunbi Heo’s family as a channel for negotiations with the Yuan Dynasty, as her daughter was married to Injong, the prince of the Yuan Dynasty at the time；this is another reason behind his marriage to Queen Sunbi, during his reinstatement to the throne. Moreover, the queen’s former father-in-law, Jean-gong Suk, was ‘the most senior man in his clan’ and also a main figure for controlling his domestic clan. As King Chungseon returned to the Yuan Dynasty after reinstating to the throne, he appointed Jean-gong Suk as the acting director general of the Secretariat for Conquering the East, and dispatched Jo Ryeon, who was a younger brother-in-law of Queen Sunbi, as the first envoy to the Yuan Dynasty. This suggests that Queen Sunbi’s family was very useful for the domestic politics of the Goryeo Dynasty and the diplomacy with the Yuan Dynasty.
