상처받을 수 있는 주체: 대칭성과 비대칭성 윤리 사이에서 (Vulnerable Subject: Between Symmetric and Asymmetric Ethics)

초록

이 논문은 대칭성의 윤리로 대표되는 의사소통의 윤리에 비대칭성의 계기가 내재함을 논증한다. 이 계기는 이미 헤겔의 인정윤리에 내포된 것이었다. 타자의 인정에 의존하는 노예적 주체성이 그것이다. 하지만, 헤겔과 하버마스 그리고 호네트에게 잠재해 있는 비대칭성의 계기는 권리나 자격을 가진 타자에게 비롯하는 것이므로, 레비나스의 비대칭성의 윤리와 거리가 있다. 레비나스는 아예 권리나 자격 자체가 박탈당한 근본적 타자성을 전제하고 있기 때문이다. 그래서 전자를 대칭성의 비대칭성으로 규정할 수 있다면, 후자는 근본적 비대칭성으로 규정할 수 있다. 전자를 통해 주체는 개량적 태도를 취하게 되고, 후자를 통해서 주체는 자신과 자신의 사회적 구조를 혁신시켜야 하는 혁명적 태도를 취하게 된다. 여기서 관건은 주체의 개량적 태도를 통해서는 결코 근본적으로 배제된 타자에 대해 어떠한 윤리적 태도도 취하지 못한다는 사실이다. 단지 포함된 존재나, 장차 포함될 수 있는 존재와의 관계만을 조율할 수 있을 뿐이다.
이 논문은 근본적으로 배제된 절대적 타자성이 제기하는 윤리적 요구를 ‘임계적 비판’으로, 이들이 내재하고 있는 공적 잠재력을 ‘임계적 공공성’으로 규정한 후, 이 임계성이 근본적인 윤리적 문제를 제기한다고 주장한다. 타자가 제기하는 임계 앞에서, 다시 말해 타자와의 근본적 비대칭 관계 속에서, 주체는 자신의 무력함을 노출시킬 수밖에 없다. 이처럼 취약해진 주체, 즉 주체가 타자에게 상처 받을 수밖에 없는 존재라는 것을 주체 자신이 자각하지 못하거나 거부할 때, 주체는 자기 완결적이고 오만한 주체가 되어 배제의 폭력을 휘두르게 된다. 이 논문은 이러한 주장을 위하여 대칭성에 대한 비대칭성의 우선성을 주장하고, 비대칭성을 다루는 서로 다른 세 가지 입장을 살펴본다. 그리고 이 세 입장 중, 비대칭성의 근본성에 입각하여 대칭성 문제를 다루는 통합적 입장을 지지한다.

영어초록

This paper argues that the moment of asymmetry is inherent in the ethics of communication represented by the ethics of symmetry. This moment has already been embedded in Hegel's ethics of recognition. It is a slave subjectivity that depends the recognition of others. However, the potential moments of asymmetry in Hegel, Habermas, and Honneth come from the other having rights and membership in a specific community, so it is far from Levinas's ethics of asymmetry, because Levinas presupposes a radical otherness that has been deprived of any rights or membership itself. Thus the former can be defined as asymmetry for the symmetry and the latter can be defined as radical asymmetry. Through the former, the subject takes on a reformist attitude, and through the latter, the subject takes on a revolutionary attitude that must subvert itself and its social structure. It matters that through the subject's reformist attitude, it is never possible to take any ethical attitude toward the fundamentally excluded others. In the end, the subject's reformist attitude can only but tune the relationship among the beings involved or the beings that may be included in the future.
This paper defines the ethical demands raised by the fundamentally excluded absolute others as ‘primal critics’, and defines the potential for publicness that they have as ‘the publicness of primal critics’. I argue that this primal criticality raises radically ethical issues. In front of the primal critics raised by the other, in other words, in a fundamental asymmetric relationship with the other, the subject has no choice but to expose his own powerlessness. When the subject does not recognize or reject that it is such a vulnerable subject, that is, a subject that cannot but be vulnerable from others, the subject becomes a self-complete and arrogant subject and wields the violence of exclusion to others. In order to dissolve this problem, this paper suggests the priority of asymmetry over symmetry and examines three different positions dealing with asymmetry. Among these three positions, I will take the integrative approach for dealing with the problem of symmetry in the position based on radical asymmetry.
