초록

본 연구는 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원에 소장된 〈동문송별도(東門送別圖)〉의 회화적 특징과 제작 과정, 그리고 그 정치적 의미를 심층적으로 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 〈동문송별도〉는 1682년(숙종 8) 유창(兪瑒, 1614-1690)의 송별연을 기념하여 제작된 그림으로, 행사기록화의 범주에 속하면서도 중국 고사인물화의 도상을 차용하여 독특한 서사 구조를 형성한다는 점에서 주목된다. 그림 속 동대문과 동관왕묘의 공간적 배치, 인물들의 표현, 횡권(橫卷) 형식의 구조적 특징을 분석한 결과, 이 그림은 송별 행사를 기록한다는 차원을 넘어 이소(二疏) 고사를 환기하여 유창의 염퇴(恬退) 정신을 부각하는 역할을 했을 것으로 생각된다.
특히 필자는 〈동문송별도〉의 제작 과정에 주목하여 당시 예조판서였던 남용익(南龍翼, 1628-1692)이 도화서 화원을 통해 그림 제작을 주도했을 정황을 분석하였다. 또한 발문에 기록된 시문 수창(酬唱)과 권축(卷軸)의 완성 과정을 검토함으로써 그림이 제작된 구체적인 시기를 추적하였으며, 유창의 아들 유득일(兪得一, 1650-1712)이 발문(跋文)의 글을 재배치하여 작성하였음을 밝혔다.
나아가 본 연구에서 필자는 〈동문송별도〉가 제작된 1682년의 정치적 맥락을 분석하여, 이 그림이 당시의 정치적 변화와 밀접하게 연관된 작품일 가능성을 제시하였다. 경신환국(庚申換局) 이후 서인 내부의 분열이 가속화되던 시점에서 〈동문송별도〉는 유창의 정치적 입장을 공고히 하고 정치와 거리를 두려는 그의 의도를 은유적으로 드러내는 매개체로 기능했을 것이다. 이를 통해 필자는 〈동문송별도〉가 단순한 송별 기록화가 아니라, 조선 후기 정치적 맥락과 궤를 같이함과 동시에 유창의 정치적·문화적 정체성을 구축하고자 의도된 작품임을 고찰하였다.

영어초록

This study conducts an in-depth examination of the visual characteristics and production intent of Farewell at the East Gate (Dongmun Songbyeoldo, 東門送別圖), a painting housed in the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies at Seoul National University. Created in 1682 to commemorate the farewell banquet of Yu Chang (兪瑒, 1614–1690), Farewell at the East Gate is categorized as a documentary painting (girokhwa, 記錄畫). However, it uniquely incorporates iconography from narrative paintings (gosahwa, 故事畫), constructing a distinct narrative structure.
Through an analysis of the spatial arrangement of Heunginjimun Gate (Great Eastern Gate) and Donggwanwangmyo Shrine, the depiction of figures, and the structural characteristics of the horizontal scroll, this study argues that the painting not only serves as a record of the farewell event but also aligns with the story of the Han dynasty scholars Shu Guang and Shu Shou, symbolizing Yu Chang’s aspiration for a life of humble retirement Furthermore, this study explores the production process of Farewell at the East Gate, considering the possibility that Nam Yong-ik (南龍翼, 1628–1692) commissioned its creation through court painters. By analyzing the literary exchanges in the colophon poems and multiple perspectives on the painting’s completion period, this study argues that Farewell at the East Gate played a crucial role in constructing Yu Chang’s political and cultural identity within the socio-political landscape of late 17th century Joseon.
Additionally, this study examines how Farewell at the East Gate may have functioned as an indirect expression of Yu Chang’s political stance amid the escalating factional divisions within the Westerners (Seoin, 西人) following the Gyeongsin Hwanguk (庚申換局, 1680). Through this analysis, the study demonstrates that Farewell at the East Gate is not merely a documentary painting of a farewell event but a work deeply intertwined with the political dynamics of late Joseon, while also reflecting the ideal values of the literati class.
