초록

國立中央博物館 개별 전시실은 시기를 두고 순차적이며 분산적으로 이루어졌으나 전체 기획은 통사관의 구현이라는 관점에서 진행되었다. 이전에도 국립중앙박물관 고고관은 구석기~통일신라까지 시대별로 전시를 구성하였으나 세부적으로는 시대별 흐름보다는 물질별, 주제별 전시를 선호하였다. 관람객이 특정 시대 전시실의 특정 주제를 이해할 경우에는 유효한 방식이지만 전 전시실을 동일한 관점에서 시대 순으로 이해하는 데는 일정한 제약이 존재하고 있었다. 특히 국사 교과서의 시대별 흐름에 따라 교육을 받은 관람객들은 역사적인 흐름에 따른 전시를 편하게 여길 수 있다.
通史館은 국사 교과서의 서술에 맞추어 물질 자료를 시대 순으로 전시하여 역사적인 흐름을 이해하게 하는 방식으로 이루어져 있다. 전시의 대상인 물질 자료가 교과서적인 역사 서술과 맞지 않는 경우도 있으며, 이에 전시의 흐름을 끊지 않고 연결시키는 것이 중요하다. 또한 역사적인 흐름에 따르더라도 물질 자료가 가진 기본 속성을 잘 활용하여 주제별 전시를 가미하는 것이 필요하다. 따라서 실제 전시에서는 물질 자료에 기초하여 시대 순으로 전시하지만 주제별 전시도 고려하게 되어 있다. 이러한 통사관 전시는 2008년 3월 8일 고구려실의 개편으로부터 시작하여 지금도 지속되고 있다. 일부 세부적인 변화는 있으나 시대별로 전시된 통사관의 원칙은 역사 계통 박물관의 기본으로 정착하고 있다.
통사관 전시를 보완하는 새로운 움직임도 계속 이어지고 있다. 시대적 흐름을 중시하는 상설전시실을 보완하기 위해 매년 주제를 정한 特別展示가 이에 해당한다. 또한 특정 시대를 중심으로 하는 박물관도 지역에서 생기고 있는데, 마한 옹관묘가 조성된 반남고분군 범위 내에 위치하는 국립나주박물관과 백제 몽촌토성 범위 내에 존재하는 한성백제박물관이 대표적이다. 통사적인 전시를 기초로 하면서 특정시기인 마한과 한성백제라는 주제를 부각시키고 있다.
시대별 전시와 주제별 전시는 어느 방식이 과거 역사를 관람객에게 잘 이해시켜 주는 가는 정답이 존재하지 않는다. 둘 다를 이상적으로 결합하는 것이 가장 이상적일지 모르지만 무엇을 중요한 요소로 설정하는가이다. 이것이 핵심적인 문제이다.

Individual exhibition halls at the National Museum of Korea were created separately from each other and were opened one by one, but it was done so under an overall plan, which intended to create a ‘linear perspective’ that would help viewers oversee the overall history of Korea. Admittedly, the Archaeology Hall at the Museum had already been displaying artifacts by their respective periods, from the paleolithic era to the Unified Shilla period, but the details clearly reveal an inherent preference for ‘thematic exhibitions’ and ‘artifact-based displays,’ instead of trying to show visitors a consecutive flow in history. Surely it was an entirely adequate philosophy, but as a matter of fact such strategy also required a certain level of understanding on the visitors’ part, as the visitors would only be able to fully appreciate the entire collection when they were sufficiently aware of the very nature of the particular theme of a particular display. In that regard, we can say that such fashion of exhibition certainly not helped the viewers achieve a chronological perspective. Despite the general education they would have earlier gotten in schools’ classrooms, in the museum they were not at all provided with a chronological tour of historical artifacts.
So, the “History room” was designed to display artifacts in a chronological order, which the visitors would find familiar considering the traditional education they must have received through history textbooks at schools early on. The intention was to allow them to understand shifts of phases as well as periodic changes that continuously occurred in the history of Korea. Of course, the artifacts displayed here may not always agree with what the visitors had originally been taught with written texts, but they still without a doubt harbor historical truths of their own. Information from written texts and historical data extracted from excavated artifacts tend to not always match with each other, and one should not expect them to either. But one should also always be prepared of the possibility that such discrepancy (between respective historical sources of information that is), as such ‘gaps’ in appearance may create confusion that would be disturbing enough to pull the audience right out of their examination of the exhibition, and prevent them from wanting to see more and more deeply.
Among ‘exhibition by periods’ and ‘exhibition by themes,’ which one would be the better option in the end, in terms of actually helping the visitors and audience have a better understanding of the past history of the Korean people? This is a question that may have no answer, and even if it was a question that has one, it would never be easy for us to figure out which would that be, and what would that look like. Maybe, putting them altogether and incorporating elements from both options to build yet another comprehensive exhibition style should be ideal. But there will always be the issue of making a choice, which would basically be about determining elements that should be chosen to be prioritized. Our efforts of pursuit should continue in the future.
