초록

근대의 시발은 번역과 함께 도래했다. 새로운 시대 정신과 문물에 대한 자국 이입 은 번역이라는 과정을 통해 이루어진다. 그 핵심 중 하나는 새롭게 떠오르는 종교 사상에 대한 이입이었다. 성경 번역이란 작업은 이를 통해서 자국문화와 타문화가 언어를 매개로 서로 만나게 된다는 점에서 단지 종교적 의미만이 아니라 문화적, 언 어적, 사상적 의미를 동시에 내포한다. 한반도에서는 한글과 한문이라는 두 개의 언 어가 동시에 통용되었다. 전자는 구어적이고 서민적인 문화를 대변하는 언어였다. 반 면 후자는 귀족적인 정신세계를 대변하는 언어였다. 그러므로 서구 정신 세계의 핵심 을 이루는 성경이 한문으로 번역되는 것은 서구문명의 중국화 과정인 동시에 한국화의 과정이었다. 구한말 전통적인 모화사상으로부터 탈피하여 민족적 독립의 의지를 고취하고자 시도하였던 제반 사회적 분위기에 편승하여 ‘민족의 글, 한글’에 자각이 이루어진다. 이같은 자각을 더욱 진전시킨 것은 성경의 전래와 그 번역을 통해 이루 어졌다. 성경의 번역과 보급은 일차적으로 언어 생활의 중심 이동인 동시에 이를 매 개로한 문화적 혁신이라는 의의를 가진다. 한글 성경 번역과 그 보급은 전통적인 귀 족중심의 한문문화 층으로부터 한글 중심의 서민문화 계층으로 그 중심성이 이동되 는 것을 의미한다. 이 같은 변화는 만주라는 지역성을 통해 가능했다. 스코틀랜드성 서공회를 통해 존 로스는 1887년 최초 한글 번역 성경 H예수셩교젼서H를 출판, 보급 에 앞장섰다. 그를 도와 함께 했던 한인 조력자들은 이후 만주 지역과 그 지역을 넘 어서서 새로운 종교 사상과 문물의 이식에 앞장섰다. 20세기 초 국권 상실기에 한반 도와 중국의 접경 지역 만주 지역을 중심으로 자주와 독립의 열기가 뜨거웠던 것은 우연이 아니었다. 로스역 최초 한글번역성경은 한반도에 근대를 촉발하는 중요한 매 개라는 의미를 가지고 있다. 로스가 시도하였던 성경 번역은 당대 민중을 보듬는 민 중의 발견이라는 의미를 지니는 동시에 그 민중들이 장차 의식화되어 민족의 정체성 을 소유한 한 개개인의 역량으로 자라나는 모체가 되었다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다, 로스역 성경에서의 번역 원칙, 기점어보다 목표어를 중시했던 정신적 배경, 그리고 이를 통해 이루어지는 문화적 변동의 제 과정과 그 의의는 현대적 상황 속의 우리들 의 삶에도 시사하는 바가 크다.

영어초록

Coming of a new era, named Modern is closely related to Translation. Through the activ- ity of the translation, not only culmination of the new civilization, but also fresh new spirit could be introduced. One of the core of the new spirit, we can count, is the new religion. Translation of the Bible in which the two differnent cultures encounters each other, can be evaluated as a locus of the cultural, linguistic and religious transformation. At the time of late 19th century, Korean Peninsula, as was called ‘Hermit kindom’, managed two lan- guages, Korean and Chinese, simultaneously. The former, Korean, was a language of the low class people, based on the oral usage, the latter, Chinese, was a language of the literari, mainly focused on the written usage. Translation of the Bible, on which the formation of the Western civilizaion was severely indebted, into Chinese, therefore, meant the adoption of the Western spirit to China as well as of that to Joseon. During the time of transition, Joseon was evoked to use their own traditional language, Han-geul, korean, from the realiza- tion of the importance of keeping the national identity. Koreans were to be enlightened to keep their own national identity whose essence were quite different from Chinese one. such a mental awareness was rapidly spread up to all the territory of the Korean peninsula with the translation and dissemination of the Bible. Translation and Spread of the Bible contains the meaning of the renovation of their culture, first of all, and the change of the centeredness of the linguistic usage. Through the translation of the Bible into Korean, the core of the cul- tural centeredness transformed from the upper class to ordinary one. Such a dramatic change was possible in the socio-geographical context of Manturia at the time. Missionary John Ross, who was worked with the Bible Society of Scotland, indulged in translating the Bible to Korean language, produced “Yesuseongyogeonso” for the first time in Korean his- tory in 1887. Korean helper for John Ross, from that time on, were diligently delievered the production of the Korean Bible to their own people. Manchuria, during the time ofJapanese imperial rulement, became a center place to produce many patriots, fight againt the military brutal invader. Many new elites who were heavily influenced with the spirit of the new religion, Christianity, became key figures who fight for the independence of Korea from Japanese imperial rulement. With these contribution keep in mind, We can say that the translation of the Bible which was initiated by missionary John Ross, at Manchuria, was an important intermediation to bring the modernity to Korea, during the time. Ross’ Korean Bible can be counted as a basis for the meeting place among many ordinary class Koreans to evoke their patriot spirit for the independence. John Ross tried put the emphasis on the importance of the context in which the Bible to be read and spread, than that of al- ready formed and fixed.
