이주배경청년의 마이크로어그레션(Microaggression) 경험과 대처에 관한 질적연구 (A Qualitative Research on Microaggression Experiences and Coping-response of Immigrant Youth)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 한국사회에서 이주배경청년이 경험하는 마이크로어그레션(microaggression) 경험과 대처 양상을 분석하는 것이다. 분석을 위하여 경기도에 거주하는 11명의 이주배경청년을 대상으로 심층면담을 수행했다. 분석 결과, 면담참여자들은명시적이고 노골적인 형태의 마이크로인설트(microinsult)나 마이크로어설트(microassault) 보다 무의식적 편견과 인종적 고정관념에서 비롯한 마이크로인발리데이션을 빈번하게경험하였다. 하지만 경험한 차별을 꼭 짚어내기 애매하고, 암묵적이거나 비가시적인 형태로 이루어져 이에 대한 대처를 적극적으로 하기보다는 그 상황을 회피하거나 애써 무시하는 경우가 일반적이었다. 이상의 분석 결과를 기반으로 차별이 이주배경청년의 사회적위축과 정체성과 평판의 손상을 가져오지 않도록 어떤 언행이 마이크로어그레션인지에대한 사회적 환기와 교육, 더 나아가 ‘이주배경’이 고착화된 스테레오 타입으로 낙인찍히지 않도록 ‘마이크로어퍼메이션(micro affirmation)’이 필요함을 제언하였다.

영어초록

The aim of this study is to analyze migrant youth’s experiences of microaggression and the pattern of their coping responses, with a focus on analyzing the context in which microaggressions arise and the subsequent coping responses of youth. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 migrant youth residing in Gyeong-gi Province. The results show that respondents experienced more microaggressions (vague, hidden insults) than explicit, overt forms of discrimination within Korean society. However, most respondents found microaggressions vague and difficult to recognize as a form of discrimination, and as such, respondents generally chose a passive strategy or avoidance of the situation rather than more active forms of handling microaggressions. The most common response was to ignore the act of microaggression altogether as the exposure of one’s migrant status itself may lead to social discrimination and other disadvantages. Based on the results, discrimination and its countermeasures are not solely the responsibility of individual migrant youth who “do not want to be discriminated against.” Instead, the issue requires the efforts of a Korean society that “does not want to discriminate” as well as forums for public discussion to address structural problems that may stand in the way. In addition, there is a need for social awareness and education around microaggressions, as to prevent vague forms of discrimination (based on subconscious prejudices) from causing the social withdrawal of migrant youth, as well as a need for mutual recognition as to not underestimate their disadvantages and sensitivity so that being from a “migrant background” does not become stigma.
