초록

Against Christian Metz’s theory of the universality of image, consequently that of cinema, this essay argues for the continuing tension between the nationality and transnationality in cinema by examining verbal languages and visual images in the film About Love. Co-directed by the Japanese Ten Shimoyama, Taiwanese Chin-yen Yee, and Chinese Yibai Zhang, casting Japanese, Taiwanese, and Chinese actors and actresses, featuring transnational loves between a Japanese woman and a Taiwanese man, a Taiwanese woman and a Japanese man, and a Chinese girl and a Japanese man, About Love seems to be one of the representative examples of transnational cinema produced in the transnational age of today.
While image itself is transnational, the verbal language is national, hence a language is limited to the national community communicating in the language. The "Taipei" and "Shanghai" segments of About Love demonstrate the undeniable persistence of nationality in that the people in the segments cannot construct a human relationship between them because of language barriers. The segment of "Tokyo" demonstrates the possibility of a transnational love between a Japanese woman and a Taiwanese man through the medium of moving images. This is a statement about the transnationality of cinema and the opening up of the possibility of transnational relationships via cinema. However, the non-linear structure of the film restricts any definite statement for the affirmation of nationality or transnationality in the film. The film is raising questions, rather than answers, about the nationality and transnationality of cinema.
