Gender-Based Bias against Female Parliamentarians in the Media Coverage and Tone: An Empirical Analysis of South Korea

초록

Do female members of parliaments in South Korea tend to suffer from lower media visibility and a more negative tone than their male counterparts do? Even though the gender-based bias against female parliamentarians in the media has received academic attention, this research question has not been empirically and thoroughly examined. In this article, we aim to fill this research gap by analyzing the case of South Korea. Based on 144,588 news articles about 299 legislators in the 21st Korean National Assembly from June 2021 to June 2022, we conduct a panel regression analysis with individual legislators-month as a unit of analysis. The empirical results show that female parliamentarians have received more attention from the media in terms of the number of news articles and the number of words in the news. In addition, we also find that heterogeneous gender-based bias in the media according to legislators’ electoral tiers. At the same time, it is unveiled that female decision-makers elected through PR systems are covered in more negative tones in media coverage compared to their counterparts.
