섬 관광활성화를 위한 민화속 화훼의 도상적 상징성 연구 (A Study on the Iconic Symbolism of Flowering Plant in Folk Paintings to Revitalize Island Tourism)

초록

본 연구는 조선 후기에 유행한 민화 속 화훼를 대상으로 도상적 상징성을 분석하였다. 민화 속 화훼가 지닌 도상적 상징성은 내면적 휴머니즘을 나타내는 민화의 특성이다. 우리 조상들은 자연에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 화훼를 그림 소재로 끌어와 구복, 길상벽사, 행복 등을 상징하는 기호로 활용하였다. 화려한 색채의 화훼 그림을 삶의 현장에서 활용했다는 것은 실생활에서 행복한 삶을 기원했던 간절한 마음을 드러낸 것으로 일종의 플라시보 효과(placebo effect)를 기대했다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 시도는 문화예술의 사회적 가치 측면에서 볼 때, 치유성이 강한 문화예술 활동이었다. 이러한 시각에서 민화 속 화훼는 조형성만을 추구하는 도상적 의미에 그치지 않고, 다른 어떤 문화예술 장르보다 다원적 의미의 상징성을 내포한다.
이러한 화훼의 상징성은 당시의 사회적 이데올로기를 표현하는 비언어적 커뮤니케이션의 수단이었지만 언어로 표현하는 것보다 훨씬 더 강력한 의사소통의 수단이었다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 민화 속 화훼가 상징하는 은유(metaphor)는 우리 민족의 정서를 대변하는 요소로 (해양)문화콘텐츠 소재로도 활용될 가능성이 충분하다.
(해양)문화콘텐츠는 우리의 생활, 주거, 생태, 관광, 오락, 음식 등에 문화라는 공통의 주제를 가지고 융복합하며 꾸준히 개발되고 있다. 문화콘텐츠는 지역의 정체성과 경쟁력을 제고하는 수단으로 지속적인 개발이 요구되며 지역문화 기반의 문화원형 기능을 한층 더해주는 결과로 이어질 것이다.
민화 속 화훼는 상징성 외에도 민족 고유의 전통성, 자주적 창조성, 창조기반의 정서적 표출, 소통을 위한 사회적 교감, 심리적 치유기능, 이상과 미래에 대한 희망이 담겨 있다. 전통 민화에 대한 자각과 예술적 구현으로 화훼 도상의 상징성을 현대적 감각으로 재창조하여 우리의 생활에 활용한다면 민화의 가치는 우리의 삶 속으로 들어와 공존하면서 현대인의 삶을 더욱 윤택하게 할 것이다.
이러한 시도에서 (해양)문화컨텐츠와의 접목은 흥미로운 장이 될 것이며 민화속에 나타난 화훼라는 상징적 기호에 내재된 민중 의식과 가치는 일종의 문화원형으로서 (해양)문화콘텐츠를 활성화하기 위해서 긴밀한 초석이 되어줄 것이며 반드시 연구되어야 할 대상이다.

영어초록

This study analyzed the symbolism of the figure on flower paintings in folk paintings that were popular in the late Joseon Dynasty. The iconic symbolism of flower plant in folk paintings is the characteristic of folk paintings that represent inner humanism. Our ancestors used flowers commonly found in nature as material for paintings and used them as symbols to symbolize subsistence, fortune and bixie and happiness. The use of colorful flower paintings in the field of life revealed the desperate heart that wished for a happy life in real life, and it can be said that a kind of placebo effect was expected. This attempt was an artistic activity with strong healing properties in terms of social value of the cultural art. From this point of view, flowers in folk paintings are not limited to the iconic meaning of pursuing only formativeness, but have more pluralistic symbolism than any other genre of culture and art. This symbolism of flowers was a means of non-linguistic communication that expressed social ideology at the time, but it could be said that it was a much more powerful means of communication than that expressed in language. Therefore, the metaphor symbolized by the flowers in folk paintings is an element representing the sentiment of our people, and it is highly likely to be used as a material for (marine)cultural content.
By converging with the common theme of culture in our life, housing, ecology, tourism, entertainment, and food, (ocean) cultural contents are continuously developed. Cultural contents require continuous development as a means of enhancing the identity and competitiveness of the region, and will lead to the result of adding the function of more cultural archetypes based on local culture.
In addition to symbolism, floriculture in folk paintings contain ethnic national tradition, independent creativity, emotional expression based on creation, social rapport for communication, psychological healing function, and hope for the ideal and the future. If the symbolism of the flower icon is recreated in a modern sense and used in our lives through awareness and artistic realization of traditional folk paintings, the values of folk paintings will enter our lives and coexist, more enriching the lives of modern people.
In this attempt, the grafting of (marine) cultural contents will be an interesting place. The people's consciousness and value inherent in the symbolic sign of floriculture appeared in folk paintings is the target to be studied in order to revitalize (marine) cultural contents as a kind of cultural archetype, and will serve as a close foundation.
