섬 지역 노인의 생활실태와 복지서비스 욕구 - 여수시의 섬을 중심으로 - (A Study on the Living Conditions and Welfare Service Needs of the Elderly in Yeosu's Islands)

초록

Korea is rapidly becoming an aged society, and particularly the islands are more serious. The islands' elderly population exceeds 20 percent , which is regarded as a super-aged society. However, during the previous years the island elderly received only little attention and researches regarding them are rare. Thus, in order to improve the quality of life and to narrow regional disparities, this study investigated the living conditions and the needs of the elderly in Yeosu islands. Questionnaire from 128 elderly people have been collected and used as data. The data was analyzed using non-parametric statistics of SPSS 19.0 program.
The results were as follows. Most of the elderly people were alone and few have care-givers. Transportation was regarded as the most inconvenient factor for the elderly living in the island. Residential environment was very poor and many houses lacked convenient facilities. Since islands are very isolate, domiciliary care is needed for the elderly. Thus, religious leaders who are natives should be fostered as care-givers and residential environment be improved. Welfare services such as health care, bathing and housekeeping service are so limited to the islands' elderly that the short or long term plans to secure domiciliary health care system should be arranged.
