주자 인(仁) 개념의 교육적 의미: 『인설(仁說)』과 『논어집주(論語集註)』를 중심으로 (Educational meaning of the Concept of Benevolence (仁) by Zhu-Xi: Based on renshuo (仁說) and lunyujizhu (論語集註))

초록

본고는 주자의 『인설』과 『논어집주』를 중심으로 ‘인’의 의미를 밝히고 교육적 의미를 제시하는데 목적이 있다. 이에 주자의 ‘인’의 개념을 살피고 『인설』에서 밝힌 주자의 ‘인’에 대한 체계적인 개념과 실천의 방법을 제시하고자 한다. 『인설』에서의 ‘인’은 사랑이다. 이는 마음의 덕(心之德)으로 표현된다. ‘인’은 사단인 인 의 예 지를 주재하기도 하지만 포괄한다. 『주자어류』에서 인은 인의 본체, 의는 인의 단속, 예는 인의 형식, 지는 인의 분별이라표현한 것도 같은 맥락이다. ‘애지리’는 어떠한 영향을 받지 않은 상태인 본체로서의 ‘인’이며 ‘애지발’은 감정 등의 영향을 받았을 때 말과 행동 등으로 실천하는 ‘인’이다. 주자가 제시한 애지리와 애지발의 개념은 인의 이치를깨닫고 실천으로 옮길 수 있다는 것을 강조하는 것과 동시에 단순한 사랑의 감정으로서의 인을 넘어선 앎(知)과실천(行)의 영역으로 ‘인’의 개념을 확장시켜 준다. 『논어집주』에서 주자의 ‘인’의 의미가 잘 드러나는 부분은 효제(孝弟)에 대한 해석이다. 고주(故註)는 효제를 인의 본질, 근본으로 보는 반면에 주자는 효제의 본질은 ‘인’이며효제는 인의 작용으로 보았다. 결론적으로 주자가 강조하는 ‘인’은 한 개인이 ‘인’의 본질을 각성하고, 가정 사회등에서 맺게 되는 사람들과의 상호관계 속에서 ‘인’을 실천하면서 온전하게 피워내는 사랑이다.

영어초록

The key word representing ‘the Analects of Confucius (論語)’ is perhaps ‘benevolence (仁; rén).’ Zhu-Xi viewed the Analects of Confucius as an important essence (精髓) in the study of Ryu Xue (儒 學). Usually, benevolence is understood and interpreted as the ‘compassion (pitiful mind) (惻隱之心)’ or love toward human beings. However, ‘benevolence (仁; rén)’ is much deeper and wider in its essence and application to just be interpreted as having these two meanings. Therefore, in the ‘Analects of Confucius,’ the aspects of ‘benevolence’ are interpreted diversely in the conversations between Confucius and his disciples, and Zhu-Xi deemed that ‘benevolence’ in ‘the Analects of Confucius’ is difficult to understand for beginner-level scholars. Eventually, in his work ‘Renshuo,’ Zhu-Xi defined ‘benevolence’ as a virtue of the heart, its essence that presides the benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom (仁義禮智); the reason for love as human nature; and the manifestation of love as a benevolent action. The forms of ‘benevolence’ in the Analects of Confucius could be explained with various words, such as loyalty (zhōng,忠) (faithfulness of oneself), forgiveness (shù, 恕) (solicitude for others), self-discipline (kèjǐfùlǐ, 克己復禮) (restrain from personal greed and restore proprieties), filial piety (xiào,孝), brotherhood (dì,弟) (fraternal love between brothers), and trust (xìn, 信) (faith). It can also be presented in various ways in everyday diverse human relations and situations. If we expand the essence and effect of such ‘benevolence’ to the educational meaning, then it could be said that the starting point of benevolence is the basal relationship between parents and the child, which happens only once in each person’s lifetime. As the relationships with other people expand based on the love of parents and the child's filial devotion to them, the form of benevolence becomes more diverse. Therefore, it is important emphasize the process of nurturing a person into a benevolent person (仁者) throughout one’s lifetime based on its knowledge and practice. Further, school education connotes the possible contemplation of and introspection on what is ‘benevolence’ by the three main figures in education: the student, teacher, and parents. It also involves the contemplation of how to recognize the essence of benevolence and how such practices should take place.
