한 마을 노인회 여성들의 새마을운동 기억: 생애이야기 연구에서의 대화적 구축주의 접근방법을 통해서 (A Recollection of the Saemaul Undong by Women of One Village’s Senior Citizen Association: Through Method of Approach of Conversational Constructivism of Life Story Study)

초록

이 연구는 한 마을 노인회 안에서 새마을운동의 집합적인 기억이 어떻게 성립하고 있는지를 검토하는 연구이다. 1970년대 마을 부녀회 활동을 통해 새마을운동을 함께 경험한 노인회 여성들의 이야기 특성을 파악하기 위해 생애이야기 연구에서의 대화적 구축주의 접근방법을 자료의 성격에 맞게 변형하여 활용하였다. 구체적으로 그간 아카데미즘과 커뮤니티, 조직집단에서 탁월한 위치를 차지해 온 전형적 이야기인 ‘모델 이야기’의 영향 때문에 일반회원으로 활동한 여성의 경험을 제대로 듣기가 어려움을 밝혔다. 그리고 이를 극복하기 위한 방법을 모색하는 과정에서, 이 연구는 노인회 여성 개개인을 대상으로 ‘당신에게 있어서 새마을운동은 어떠한 것인가’라는 질문을 가지고 인터뷰를 진행하고 이를 통해 수집된 자료를 중첩시킴으로써 노인회 여성들이 새마을운동을 어떻게 회고하고 있는지를 검토하였다. 그 결과 노인회 여성들이 말하는 새마을운동의 경험은 한편으로는 노인회 안에서 ‘공통’의 이야기, 공통의 의미 부여가 이루어지고 있는 ‘공통’의 것이면서, 다른 한편으로는 개개인에 의해서 다른 이야기, 다른 의미 부여가 이루어지고 있는 ‘고유’의 것임을 이해할 수 있었다. 다만 이러한 각 개인의 ‘고유’한 경험은 단독으로 존재하는 것이 아니라 노인회의 경험 이야기 속에 자리 잡고 있었다. 즉 완전히 개인적인 기억이 아닌 마을 공동체생활 속에서 중층적인 기억의 형태를 이루고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 이러한 경험 이야기는 ‘사회적 맥락’을 넘어, 말하자면 가족을 둘러 싼 ‘마을공동체나 친족공동체적 맥락’에서 새마을운동의 경험을 해석하는 것이며 새마을운동을 경험하지 않은 세대의 사람들이 해석하는 새마을운동과 대치할 가능성이 있음을 시사하고 있다. 이 연구의 의의는 화자와 청자의 언어적 상호행위를 통해 이야기가 생성되는 현상에 주목하는 접근방식이 한 집단 기억의 사회적 측면을 이해하는 데 유용함을 보여준 점이다. 이를 통해 질적 연구에 대한 인식론적 전환의 가능성을 제시한 점에도 그 의미가 있다.

영어초록

This study examines the means of materialization of a communal recollection of the Saemaul Undong in a senior citizen association of one village. In order to grasp the characteristics of the stories of women in the senior citizen association who experienced the Saemaul Undong through activities in the women’s neighborhood committee in the 1970’s, the conversational constructivism of the study of life stories was changed to fit the character of the data. Specifically, due to the influence of a typical “model story” that occupied a superior position in academism, community and organized groups in the meanwhile, it proved difficult to properly hear the experiences of women who were active as ordinary members. In the process of seeking a method to overcome this, this study progressed with the interview with the question “What was the Saemaul Undong to you?” for each individual woman of the senior citizen association, and through the overlap of collected data, it was examined how the women of the senior citizen association look back on the Saemaul Undong.
As a result, the experiences of the Saemaul Undong that the women of the senior citizen association recalled was a story of “commonness” within the senior citizen association, a matter of “commonness” in which the meaning of commonness was acquired, while on one hand it was a different story based on each person and a matter of “inherence” in which another meaning was acquired. Only, each individual’s “inherence” experience did not exist independently but settled into the stories of experiences of the senior citizen association. Namely, it was discovered that the experiences were in a village’s community life and not a completely personal memory that had an intermediate form of recollection. Moreover, these stories of experiences surpassed “social contexts” and interpreted the experiences of the Saemaul Undong from “the context of a village community or relative community” surrounding a family, and it is hinted that there is the possibility of a replacement with an interpretation of a Saemaul Undong by people of a generation that did not experience the Saemaul Undong.
The significance of this study is to show the value of an approach method that observes the circumstances of the creation of a story through a linguistic mutual act of the speaker and the listener in examining the social side of one group’s recollection. Through this, there is a significance in the presentation of the possibility of an epistemic transition regarding a qualitative study.
