‘모죽지랑가’의 새 해독과 창작 시기 (A Revised Decipherment of Mojukjirangka and Its Chronological Origin)

This paper aims to introduce a revised decipherment and to discuss the chronological origin of the hyangka Mojukjirangka of ‘Hyosowangdae Jukjirang’ in Samkukyusa. We can investigate when this song was created by examining the contents of the song and preexisting historical records. Most of the research on this song follows the decipherment of Yang, Ju-dong (1942/1965/1981), and shows the tendency to believe that Deuko might have create this song when Jukjirang visited him at the Busan castle (富山城). However, the contents of this song do not show that it was created when Jukjirang was alive. Furthermore, the historical records on this period do not show that this song was created when Jukjirang visited Deuko at the Busan castle. The interpretation such as ‘the figure which was showing the beauty’ and ‘the face was wrinkled’ is problematic because the much accumulated study of the records of Samkukyusa and others does not coincide with this kind of argument. This study focuses on demonstrating the interpretation that this song was created after Jookjirang's death, following the decipherment of Kim, Wan-jin (1979/1980, 1985, 2008). Because of Kim Heum-dol’s rebellion, Jukjirang might have lost his political power and died at King Hyoso period after living in obscurity for about 15 years. Kim, Wan-jin (2008) claims that Jukjirang’s figure mentioned in the fourth line is not the figure in the portrait but that in Deuko's memory, and that ‘皆理米’ in the first line must be deciphered as ‘to conduct his funeral service’. Based on Kim, Wanjin (2008), I suggest that this song was created by Deuko, who had been very intimate with the noble Jukjirang in Hwarangdo, in order to be used as an elegy on the day of funeral ceremony after his death or memorial ceremony one year after his death.
