한국어와 말레이어간 번역상 제 문제에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Translability of Literary Works in Korean and Malay)

초록

우리말 평안도 사투리의 지방색을 외국어로 옮기는 것이 가능할까? 만약 그것이 불가능한 일이라면 근본적으로 문학작품의 외국어 번역은 가능한 것인가? 이와같은 문제는 전문번역가가 아니더라도 문학작품의 번역에 조금이라도 관여한 경험이 있는 사람이라면 누구나가 한 번쯤 생각해 볼 수 있는 본질적인 의문 사항일 것이다.
본고는 번역의 개념이 논자의 관점에 따라 적지않은 차이가 있다는 점에 주목하고 실제번역의 사례를 통해 이종간 언어의 번역과정에서 일어날 수 있는 몇 가지 문제들에 관해 알아본다. 번역의 사례로 동원되는 자료는 1970년대와 80년대에 우리말과 말레이어 (말레이시아어와 인도네시아어)로 번역된 문학작품들 중 일부이다.
이들 문학작품들의 번역결과를 비교 검토하기 위해서는 소위 예술번역의 가능성을 전제로 할 필요가 있다. 이를 위해 이종 기호체계간 전이의 측면과 언어의 상대성이론의 관점에서 언어의 본질과 실제번역의 상관 관계를 정리한다. 이로써 도출되는 번역의 제문제를 중심으로 전문번역가 양성의 필요성을 제기해 본다.

영어초록

Jakobson(1987a:429) does not restrict the notion of translation to <translation proper) (translation into another language). Instead he takes a much wider view and extends the notion of translation to cover translation into other signs of the same language as well as into another nonverbal system of symbols. According to this view, he terms the process of translation, "creative transposition". This means that translation is the translator' s activity as a cognitive performance.
This study aims to investigate the translatablity of some literary works in Malay and Korean in the 1970s and 1980s. For this , we need to take the principle of linguistic relativity. This principle implies the hypothesis that language is an index to culture. This means that language does , to a certain extent , influence the thought and behaviour of its speakers. That is the reason why we need to look at the nature of language and its use in translation from the semiotic perspective.
80, what we need is a description and linguistic foundation of the translator' s activity, which is based on the cultural and linguistic knowledge.
The result of this study shows that the translators faced a number of problems, especially in doing the translation of certain linguistic expressions which contains local color(dialectal features) , idiomatic expressions and onomatopoeia, which contain the delicate linguistic features. These problems were caused by the fact that the relevant text is a cultural product which is very often called an <artistic) literary work. However the deficiency in these expressions could be amplifed by way of language-specific devices , i.e. footnotes , explanatory phrases, ellipses and the other near-equivalent expressions.
