‘3전법륜설’의 해석학적 지평으로 본 삼성설의 구조 (The Structure of the Theory of Three Natures from the Hermeneutic Perspective of “the Three Turns of the Dharma Cakra”)

초록

이 논문은 『유가론석』이나 『석궤론』 등 인도의 초기 유식논서에 보이는 『해심밀경』의 ‘3전법륜설’에 대한 유가행파의 해석학적 입장이나 그 사상적 특징을 해명한 후, 이러한 해석학적 입장이 유식학파의 주요교설 가운데 이제설이나 삼성설 등에 어떻게 적용되고 있는가를 살펴본 것이다.
우선 ‘3전법륜설’은 『반야경』 계통의 공사상을 미료의로 설정하고, 용수를 대표로 하는 초기중관파를 제2시로 설정하고 있는 점을 그 특징으로 볼 수 있다. 이러한 ‘3전법륜설’의 구체적인 내용은 유가행파가 용수의 이제설 가운데 세속제의 영역을 좀 더 세분화하고, 즉 세속을 언어적인 표현으로만 존재하는 것과 실재로서 존재하는 세속으로 구분하여 의타기성을 기반으로 한 삼성설의 구조를 통해 ‘허무론이나 악취공’에 떨어지지 않는 공사상의 교설 체계를 새롭게 확립시키고 있는 점에서 확인된다.
한편 ‘3전법륜설’의 해석학적 입장은 『중변론』의 허망분별의 구조 속에 그대로 계승되어, 안혜의 주석에서 보이듯이 교리적으로 확립되어 적용되고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그 특징을 간략하게 정리하면, 우선 세속적 실재로서 새롭게 확립된 ‘허망분별’은 의타기성으로 설정되고, 특히 의타기성인 허망분별은 유부의 실체론적인 <有見>과 세속적 실재인 의타기성을 손감하는 중관파의 <空見>을 비판적으로 지양하는 입장에서 설정된 것임을 알 수 있다.
또한 안혜의 주석에 제시된 5종의 견해를 보면, 삼성이 초기불교 이래의 모든 교설체계를 통합하려는 의도에서 근본 진실로 다시 설정되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이 때 삼성설은 기본적으로 허망분별을 기반으로 확립되었고, 그 허망분별의 구조 속에 유식적인 이제가 도사리고 있음을 명확히 확인할 수 있다. 사실 그것에는 유가행파의 독특한 실재관이나 진리관이 반영된 것으로 이해된다.

영어초록

This article purports to clarify the doctrinal characteristics of the Yogācāra school's hermeneutic interpretations of the "theory of the three turns of the Dharma Cakra" in the Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra through early Indian Yogācāra treatises such as the Yogācārabhūmi-vyākhyā and the Vyākhyāyukti. It will probe how these interpretations apply to the theory of two truths or that of three natures(trisvabhāva) among the main doctrines of the Yogācāra school.
Especially, the peculiar characteristic of the "theory of the three turns of the Dharma Cakra" is such that the thought of śūnyatā in the lineage of Prajñāpāramita-sūtras is regarded as incomplete, as the early school of Madhyamaka represented by Nāgārjuna is conceived of as belonging to the second period of turn.
Speaking of the further details of the "theory of the three turns of the Dharma Cakra", the Yogācāra school subdivides the realm of saṃvṛti satya in Nāgārjuna's theory of two truths; that is, it divides the saṃvṛti into merely linguistic existence and actual existence, and the thus-created structure of the theory of three natures on the basis of other-dependent nature(paratantra-svabhāva) makes it possible to establish the doctrinal system of the thought of śūnyatā that is not subject to "nihilism or śūnyatā attached to evil."In effect, the above hermeneutic interpretation of the "theory of the three turns of the Dharma Cakra" is inherited into the structure of the abhūtaparikalpa in the Madhyānta-vibhāga so that, as seen in the commentary of Sthiramati, it is ascertained to apply to later doctrines through its secure establishment. To summarize its characteristics succinctly, firstly the abhūtaparikalpa newly established as a saṃvṛti-satya is set up as the other-dependent nature, which is seen to have been set up particularly in order to sublate both the Sarvāstivāda's realist "view of being" and the Madhyamaka's "view of śūnyatā" that impairs the other-dependent nature as a samvṛti-satya.
In other words, according to the five kinds of views suggested in Sthiramati's commentary, the three natures are seen to be presented as the fundamental truth in order to unify all the doctrinal systems available ever since the beginning of Buddhism. Then, the theory of three natures is established principally on the basis of the abhūtaparikalpa, while the two truths of the Yogācāra school are clearly ascertained to have been embedded in the structure of the abhūtaparikalpa. In fact, this might be understood to reflect the unique ontological view of reality or truth in the Yogācāra School.
