초록

바오 닌의『 전쟁의 슬픔』은 북베트남 참전 병사가 쓴 ‘베트남 전쟁’ 문학의 기념비적인 작품으로 평가받는다. 베트남 전쟁에 참전했던 한국으로서는 새로운 시각으로 본 ‘베트남 전쟁 문학’으로 받아들여졌다. 1994년 이 작품이 소개된 이후 세권의 다른 판본 번역이 존재할 정도였다. 번역본 간행을 통해 한국과 베트남 문학과 문학인의 교류 변화 양상도 살펴볼 수 있다.
『 전쟁의 슬픔』의 세 가지 번역 단행본 간행은 다음과 같다. 첫 책은 1994년 ‘청음’ 출판사에서 최종민이 번역한『 정글』이다. 두 번째 책은 1999년 박찬규 번역으로 간행한 ‘예담’ 출판사의『 전쟁의 슬픔』이다. 세번째 책은 2012년 ‘아시아’ 출판사에서 하재홍의 번역으로 발간된『 전쟁의 슬픔』이다.
최종민 번역의『 정글』은 영어본을 번역한 것으로, 서구 유럽의 이데올로기적 관점이 기입되어 있다. 베트남 문화와 베트남 민중의 삶의 관점에서가 아니라, 베트남 전쟁에 대한 ‘보편주의적 일반화’가 특징적이다. 박찬규 번역의『 전쟁의 슬픔』은 프랑스어본과 영어본을 참고하여 번역하여 번역의 엄밀성을 높이려는 시도를 했다. 하지만, 직역이 아닌 중역이어서 여전히 베트남 문학의 간접적 수용 양상을 보였다.
하재홍 번역의『 전쟁의 슬픔』은 베트남어를 한국어로 직접 번역한 책이다. 베트남 문학의 한국어 직역은 한국의 번역문학이 영어 중역, 프랑스어 중역과 같은 유력 언어를 매개로 한 번역에서, 직접 교류의 단계로 접어들었음을 보여주는 중요한 사건이다. 이는 아시아인의 관점에서 서구 유럽을 상대화할 수 있고, 서구 유럽의 보편주의 이데올로기에서 벗어나 한국과 베트남의 직접적인 문화교류로 접어들었음을 보여준다. 독서 문화에서도 ‘두 언어권 간의 직접적인 소통, 문학을 통한 내면의 교류, 인간적 공통감각의 교류’라는 효과를 발휘했다. 이러한 변화는 ‘베트남을 이해하려는 젊은 작가들의 모임’과 같은 작가들 간의 교류와 베트남 현지에서 공부하며 역량을 키워온 학자들의 노력의 결실이다.
바오 닌은 동양적 세계관으로 죽음, 전쟁의 문제를 깊이 있게 그려나갔다. 전쟁이 가져오는 죽음의 무차별성, 참혹한 평등성은 피하고 싶지만, 냉혹하게 존재하는 현실이다. 소설의 주인공 끼엔은 살아남은 자의 도리로서, 자신이 경험했던 전쟁의 실상을 혼돈 속에서도 사실적으로 보여준 인물이다. 바오 닌의 소설 쓰기는 살아남은 이후의 참혹한 삶을 ‘글쓰기’로 극복해 나가는 여정의 기록이기도 하다.
엄존하는 분단현실과 휴전 상태의 한반도 상황에 비춰볼 때,『 전쟁의 슬픔』은 민중주의적 평등주의의 관점에서 전쟁을 바라볼 수 있게 한다. 아시아 전쟁문학의 한 정점을 보여주는『 전쟁의 슬픔』은 평화의 가치를 돋보이게 하는 비극의 파노라마이다. 문학은 전쟁 서사를 통해 평화의 간절함에 대해 공감하게 한다. 바오 닌의『 전쟁의 슬픔』의 한국적 수용은 평화를 위한 전쟁 문학의 한국․베트남 문학의 직접적 교류로의 변화과정을 보여준다는데 의미가 있다.

Bao Ninh's "The Sorrow of War" is considered a monumental work of "Vietnam War" literature written by a North Vietnamese veteran. As a country that also participated in the Vietnam War, Korea has accepted this novel as "Vietnam War literature" seen through a new perspective. Since its introduction in 1994, there have been translations of as many as three different editions. Through the publication of these translations, it is possible to examine the changing aspects of exchanges between Korean and Vietnamese literature and literary people.
There have been three different published translations of "The Sorrow of War". The first book, "Jungle", was translated by Choi Jong-min and published by Cheongeum in 1994. The second book, "The Sorrow of War", was translated by Park Chan-gyu and published by Yedam in 1999. The third book, also titled "The Sorrow of War", was translated by Ha Jae-hong and published by Asia in 2012.
The Jungle, translated by Choi Jong-min, is a direct translation of the English version, and contains the ideological perspective of Western Europe. Not from the perspective of Vietnamese culture and the lives of Vietnamese people, it is characterized by the "universalistic generalization" of the Vietnam War. The Sorrow of War, translated by Park Chan-gyu, attempted to increase the precision of translation by referring to French and English versions, but it still showed an indirect acceptance of Vietnamese literature due to its indirect translation from a third language instead of literal translation.
Ha Jae-hong's "The Sorrow of War" is a direct Vietnamese translation into Korean. The Korean translation of Vietnamese literature is an important event that shows that Korean translation literature has entered the stage of direct exchange in translation through influential languages such as indirect translation from English and indirect translation from French. This shows that it can relativize Western Europe from an Asian perspective, and that it has entered a direct cultural exchange between Korea and Vietnam, breaking away from the universalist ideology of Western Europe. In the reading culture, it also had the effect of "direct communication between the two languages, internal exchange through literature, and exchange of a common human sense." This change is the result of exchanges between writers such as "A Group of Young Writers to Understand Vietnam" and the efforts of scholars who have developed their capabilities by studying in Vietnam.
Bao Ninh delved deeply into the issues of death and war through an Eastern worldview. The indiscriminate nature of death and the brutal equality a war brings is something one would want to avoid, but it is a harsh reality that exists. The protagonist of the novel, Kien, shows the reality of the war he experienced in a realistic way, even in the midst of confusion, as a survivor's duty.
