安養寺 七層塼塔에 대한 考察 (A Study on Anyang-sa seven story brick pagoda)

초록

경기도 안양시에 소재한 안양사는 고려초 태조 왕건이 능정이란 스님을 만나 창건한 사찰로 전해진다. 또한 안양시의 지명유래가 시작된 곳으로 아미타불의 정토신앙이 담긴 안양세계의 이상향을 간직한 사찰이다. 문헌에 의하면 안양사에는 태조 왕건이 건립한 안양사칠층전탑이 있어 일찍부터 많은 선학들의 관심을 집중시켰다. 특히 안양사칠층전탑은 여주 신륵사다층전탑과 함께 경상도 지역을 벗어나 조성된 고려시대 전탑이다. 아울러 탑에는 회칠과 함께 채색을 하였다는 내용이 있어 주목을 끌게 한다. 종파적으로 안양사는 고려시대 법상종 사찰로 왕실 및 중앙의 지배층과 고려후대 까지 지속적인 연관을 지니고 있었던 것으로 파악된다. 따라서 안양사는 불교를 건국이념으로 하는 왕건과 능정의 정치적 이해 관계 속에 창건 되었으며 안양사칠층전탑은 비보풍수에 의한 사탑으로 조성되었다. 그리고 석탑이 아닌 전탑으로 조성된 이유는 신라계 승려인 능정의 주도하에 문화적 회귀라고 하는 고려초 조탑에 흐름으로 파악할 수 있다. 또한 안양사칠층전탑은 옥개석 낙수면에 기와를 덮어 외형에 있어 안동의 신세동과 동부동의 전탑과 유사성을 지녔을 것으로 판단된다. 또한 회칠과 관련하여 우리나라에서는 일군의 모전석탑에서 그 흔적을 찾을 수 있으며 문헌상으로도 백탑의 존재가 기록되어 보편적인 조탑 기술에 하나로 평가된다. 따라서 안양사칠층전탑은 회칠을 하고 다양한 채색으로 불보상을 그림으로 경외감과 장엄함을 한층 강조하였을 것으로 추정된다. 이러한 안양사칠층전탑은 1131년 (고려 인종 9년) 또 한 차례의 중수를 거쳐 고려시대 후대에 이르러 최영에 의하여 두 번째 중수를 하게 된다. 최영은 안양사칠층전탑 중수를 성조 즉, 태조의 국가 경영을 우러러 생각하고 탑을 새롭게 하지 않을 경우 성조의 영에 죄를 짓는 것이라 맹세하며 군비를 털어 중수를 할 정도로 깊은 관여를 한다. 그러나 그 이면에는 고려 말 기울어져가는 국가와 왕실의 권위를 안양사칠층전탑을 통하여 새롭게 재건코자하는 의미가 담겨 있었음을 발견하게 된다.

영어초록

Anyang-sa, located in the city of Anyang, Gyeonggi-do, is a temple known to be built by Wang-gun, King Teajo of Koryo dynasty, after he met with a Buddhist priest named Neungjung. Also, this temple is where the name for Anyang city came from, and it reflects the utopia of Anyang world, which contains the faith in the Buddhist Elysium called Amitabul. According to historical literatures, Anyang-sa contains Anyang-sa seven story brick pagoda built by King Teajo Wang-gun and has drawn special attention from many scholars since a long time ago. Especially, Anyang-sa seven story brick pagoda, along with Sinreuk-sa multifloor pagoda located in Yeoju, is a temple constructed in Koryo dynasty outside the region of Gyeongsang province. In addition, it is noteworthy that the pagoda was painted with various colors on top of the lime. As to the Buddhist denomination, Anyang-sa belongs to the Beopsangjong in Koryo period, and it is understood that this temple maintained a continuous relationship with the royal family and central ruling class until late Koryo dynasty. Therefore, Anyang-sa was built fulfilling the political interest of Neungjung and Wang-gun, who set the Buddhism as the spirit of the national foundation in his dynasty, and Anyang-sa seven story brick pagoda was constructed as a temple pagoda according to the Bibopoongsu (the configuration of the ground related to sad news). The reason it was constructed as a brick pagoda not a stone pagoda is due to the trend of cultural return in building towers led by the Silla priest Neungjung during early Koryo dynasty. Also, Anyang-sa seven story brick pagoda has tiles covering the water-falling surface of the roof stone, and it is inferred that this pagoda has similar external appearance to the brick pagodas located in Sinse-dong and Deongbu-dong of Andong city. Also, as to the lime painting, its trace is found in imitation brick pagodas located in several regions in Korea, and the existence of a white pagoda is recorded in historical literatures, illustrating the lime painting as one of the general pagoda-building techniques. Therefore, it is inferred that by drawing an image of Buddha with various colors on top of the lime paint, Anyang-sa seven story brick pagoda emphasized the sense of respect and magnificence. Anyang-sa seven story brick pagoda underwent a major repair in 1131 (9th year of King Injong’s ruling) and the second major repair by Choi-Young in the late period of Koryo dynasty. Choi-Young considered the repair of Anyang-sa seven story brick pagoda to be a sacred task that will remind the people of the spirit of national foundation by King Teajo, and he swore that it is a crime against the Holy King, the spirit of King Teajo, to hesitate renewing the pagoda. He even spent the military expenses on the reconstruction. However, on the other side, it is found that there was an intention to newly rebuild the authority of King and his Royal Court declining in late Koryo period through the reconstruction of Anyang-sa seven story brick pagoda.
