황룡사 창건기토기의 재검토 (The Chronological Position of Pottery Dating to the Founding Period of Hwangryongsa Temple)

초록

이 글은 최근 황룡사지 발굴성과 가운데 황룡사 창건기에 해당되는 새로운 자료를 중심으로 황룡사 창건기토기를 재검토하고 신라토기 역연대자료로서의 편년적 위치를 살펴본 것이다.
기존의 황룡사 창건기토기는 1984년에 보고된 황룡사의 습지층, 대지조성층, 1차 가람 기초유구, 금당 기단판축토, 강당 동북쪽 폐토기무지인 5곳에서 출토된 토기이며, 이 중 인화문이 시문된 토기를 제외하고는황룡사 문헌기록에 의해 황룡사가 창건되는 553년부터 금당이 만들어지는 584년 이전으로 편년되었다. 이에 관해서는 신라 후기양식토기에 기준이 되는 절대연대자료로 인정하는 견해와 이를 부정하는 견해가 크게대립되어 왔다. 이렇게 논란이 되는 이유는 황룡사 창건기토기로 소개된 토기 가운데 늦은 시기의 토기가 섞여 있기 때문이다. 그렇기 때문에 황룡사 창건기토기로 묶인 5곳의 출토지가 황룡사 창건기에 부합되는지를최근 황룡사 사역 내의 보완조사와 황룡사 남쪽 유적 발굴조사에서 보고된 습지층과 대지조성층의 발굴성과를 토대로 살펴보았다.
그 결과 습지층과 대지조성층은 대지조성층의 축조방법과 범위가 밝혀짐에 따라 한시적 대규모 토목공사에 의한 폐기동시성을 가지는 것을 확인하였다. 이와 더불어 이 유구 내부에서 출토된 단각고배와 원통와통작법으로 만들어진 신라기와는 6세기 중엽으로 편년되었다. 다만, 황룡사 강당 동북쪽 폐토기무지에는 7 세기 전반에서 그 이후로 편년되는 토기가 섞여 있고 유구의 조성시기가 불분명한 점에 의해 황룡사 창건기토기에서 제외시켜야 할 것으로 판단하였다. 따라서 황룡사지 발굴조사에서 확인된 습지층과 대지조성층, 그내부에서 출토된 단각고배와 기와는 황룡사 창건연대에 부합되는 절대연대자료로 판단된다.

영어초록

This article reviews pottery made during the founding period of Hwangryongsa Temple, focusing on newly excavated data, and examines their chronological position in an attempt to use the data as absolute dates.
The previously excavated pottery dating to the founding period of Hwangryongsa Temple, reported in 1984, came from five locales, including the wetland layer of Hwangryongsa Temple, the site formation layer, the first temple structure foundation remains, the Main Hall foundation stamped soil layer, and the pottery waste site northeast of the auditorium.
Based on the textual records of Hwangryongsa temple, the pottery was dated to the time period spanning from 553 (when Hwangryongsa Temple was founded) to 584 (when the Main Hall was built). There has been heated debate between those who therefore accept that the pottery can be seen to provide absolute dates and those who reject this opinion. The reason for this controversy is the fact that later period pottery is included in the Hwangryongsa Temple founding period pottery assemblage. Therefore, in order to establish the dates of the five locales yielding Hwangryongsa founding period pottery, the data from the wetland layer and site formation layer which was reported in a recent supplementary survey within Hwangryongsa, and the excavation results of the southern remains of Hwangryongsa, have been examined.
It was possible to confirm, as the construction method and scope of the site-forming layer were revealed, that the deposits of the wetland layer and the site formation layer had been sealed concurrently as the result of temporary, large-scale civil engineering work. In addition, short mounted cups and Silla roof tiles excavated from the inner section of the remains were dated to the middle of the 6th century. However, it was judged that since the pottery recovered from the pottery waste mound of the northeastern part of Hwangryongsa Temple was mixed with examples dating to the first half of the 7th century and later, those examples should be excluded from the Hwangryongsa founding period pottery assemblage.
Therefore, it was confirmed that the wetland layer and the site formation layer identified through the excavation of the Hwangryongsa site, and the short mounted cups and Silla roof tiles excavated from the inner sections could indeed be regarded as providing absolute dating data consistent with the founding date of Hwangryongsa Temple.
