고흥지역의 민족운동과 1894년 동학농민전쟁 - 『高興郡敎區歷史』를 중심으로 (A Study on the Racial Movement and the 1894 Donghak Peasant War in Goheung Region - Focusing on 『The History of Goheung-gun Diocese(高興郡敎區歷史)』 -)

초록

그동안 동학농민전쟁에 대한 지역사례연구가 활발히 진행되었음에도 불구하고 고흥 지역 동학농민전쟁은 주목을 받지 못했다. 그 이유는 자료 부족과 함께 주요 전투를 중심으로 한 권역별 연구가 진행되었기 때문으로 보인다. 따라서 고흥지역 동학농민전쟁 은 그 지역적 특징과 상관없이 주요 전투의 일부로서만 언급되어 왔다. 하지만 최근 『고흥군교구역사』라는 자료가 소개되면서 고흥 지역 동학농민전쟁의 전개과정과 함께 동학농민전쟁 참여자들의 이후 동향까지도 살펴볼 수 있게 되었다. 본 논문은 『고흥군교구역사』를 중심으로 고흥 동학농민전쟁의 지역적 특징을 살펴보 고자 하였다. 그 결과 고흥지역 동학농민군의 활동을 중심으로 몇 가지 특징들을 다음과 같이 정리할 수 있었다. 우선 첫 번째는 고흥과 태인 지역 동학조직의 연계성을 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 통해 김개남이 전라좌도로 진출하게 된 배경과 함께 김인배의 영호도호소의 설치배경이 해소 될 것으로 기대된다. 두 번째는 고흥지역 동학교도들의 금구집회 참여가 갖는 의미이다. 첫 번째와 연계하여 남접세력이 세력확장 과정에서 금구집회를 이해할 필요가 있다는 것이다. 즉, 금구집 회는 1894년 동학농민전쟁을 주도했던 소위 ‘남접’ 세력이 각자 영향하에 있던 동학조 직을 결집하기 위해서 개최되었으며, 이를 통해 각자 세력 간의 네트워크를 형성할 수 있었다. 따라서 1894년 남접세력이 주도했던 무장기포에 고흥동학교도들 또한 조직적 으로 참여할 수 있었던 것으로 보인다. 세 번째는 1894년 동학농민전쟁 시기 고흥동학농민군의 위상과 역할이다. 고흥동학 농민군 무장기포 당시부터 상당한 조직력을 지니고 있었으며, 이를 기반으로 전주성 입 성에 선봉 역할을 담당할 수 있었다. 또한 전주성 철수 이후에도 이러한 조직력과 군사적 역량을 바탕으로 향촌사회를 완전히 통제하는 한편 적극적으로 주변 지역에 군사적 지원 을 했던 것이다. 특히 김개남이 세력을 확장하고 네트워크를 형성하는데 중심적 역할을 하였을 뿐 아니라 2차 봉기 이후 남원에 잔류하여 후방지역을 통제하는 역할을 담당하였 다. 네 번째는 1894년 동학농민전쟁 이후 고흥지역 동학조직이 재빠르게 재건되고 있다 는 점이다. 동학농민전쟁에 참여했던 송연호 등이 생존해 있었으며 이들에 의해서 1904 년 갑진개화운동을 계기로 완전히 재건될 수 있었다. 마지막으로 천도교 교세 재건 및 확장을 배경으로 『고흥교구사』가 편찬되고 있다는 점이다. 특히 다른 교구사와는 달리 교구 내 주요 인물들의 이력을 정리하는 가운데 1894년 동학농민전쟁 참여를 언급하고 있었다. 이는 비록 ‘敎難’이라는 시각에서 크게 벗어나지 않지만, 동학농민전쟁 당시 일본군과의 전투 경험과 함께 남도 지역에서 일본 군에 의해 자행되었던 학살을 상기한다면 그 의미가 다를 수밖에 없었다. 『고흥교구사』 가 집필된 뒤 2년 후에 고흥지역에서도 송연호 등 천도교 조직이 주도하여 3.1 만세운동 이 전개된 것도 이와 무관하다고 할 수 없을 것이다.

영어초록

Up to now, although active regional case studies on the Donghak Peasant War have been performed, the War has not come into spotlight. It seems that the reason is not only that data were lacking but that studies by region have been performed focusing on major combats. Accordingly, the Donghak Peasant War in Goheung Region has been referred to as part of major combats regardless of its characteristics. Recently, however, as the data named 『The history of Goheung-gun Diocese』 was introduced, it is possible to review even the post-war trends of those who participated in the war with the process of developments in the war. This paper intended to review the regional characteristics of Goheung Donghak Peasant War focusing on 『the history of Goheung-gun Diocese』. As a result, some characteristics based on the activities of Donghak Peasant Army in Goheung Region are as follows: First, the connection of Donghak organizations in Goheung and Taein Regions could be identified. It is expected that this will solve the doubt of the backgrounds where Kim In-bae established Yeongho Dohoso and where Kim Gae-nam advanced to Left Jeolla-do. The Second is the meaning that Donghak believers in Goheung Region attend Geumgu rally. It is necessary to understand the Geumgu rally in the process of an extension of Namjeop force in connection to the first. Namely, Geumgu Rally was held by a so-called ‘Namjeop(南接) Force’ that led Donghak Peasant War to unite Donghak organizations under individual influences in 1894 it could form a network between individual forces. Accordingly, it is thought that Goheung Donghak believers also could systematically participate in Mujanggipo(茂長起包) led by Namjeop Force in 1894. The third is the status and the role of Gheung Donghak Peasant Army during the 1894 Donghak Peasant War. army had considerable organizational power from the time of Mujanggipo, and based on this, they could play a leading role in entering Jeonju Castle. Likewise, even after being withdrawn from Jeonju Castle, they completely controlled the rural community society based on this organizational power and military capability, while they positively provided military support to the surrounding area Kim Gaenam not only extended his power and played a central role in forming a network, but played a role in controlling the rear area staying in Namweon after the second uprising. The fourth is that the Donghak organization in Gheung Region rebuilt quickly Donghak Peasant War in 1894. Song Yeon-ho, etc. who participated in Donghak Peasant War was still alive, and the 1904 Gapjin Innovation Movement by them enabled the region to be rebuilt. Finally, with the background of re-establishing the religious influence of Cheondogyo, History of Goheung is being published. other dioceses, the names of the major persons were arranged and their participation in the 1894 Donghak Peasant War was mentioned within the diocese. Although this is not a sharp break from the view of ‘religion persecution(敎難),’ the meaning should naturally be different if we remind ourselves that many people were recklessly killed by Japanese soldiers in the areas of South Jeolla Province battle experience of Donghak Peasant War. Two years after History of Goheung was written, the fact that March 1st Movement was carried out under the leadership of Cheondogyo Organization including Song Yeon-ho, etc. in Goheung Region will not be irrelevant to this.
