초록

오늘날 섬유 예술은 장르 간의 경계가 옅어짐에 따라 이종 장르와의 다양한 결합을 시도하며, ‘부드러운 조각’이라는 영역으로 확장되고 있다. 특히 영상기술의 발달에 따라 디지털 아트나 미디어 아트를적용한 새로운 혼합매체 작업들이 시도되고 있으며, 이를 통해 기존 장르에 대한 고정관념에서 탈피하여 보다 역동적인 효과로 관람자들을 매료시키는 다양한 작품들이 등장하고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한현대 예술의 경향에 주목하여 부드러운 조각에 디지털 아트의 주요 매체인 빛의 적용을 통해 섬유 예술의 새로운 방향성과 확장 가능성 제시를 목적으로 한다. 연구 방법은 다음과 같다. 본 연구에서는먼저 빛의 개념과 예술에서의 역할을 살펴보며, 이후 빛의 표현 유형에 따라 작품들을 분류하여 예술에 적용된 빛의 특성과 조형적 효과에 대해 알아본다. 그리고 현대 섬유 예술의 주요 경향인 ‘부드러운 조각’에서 다양한 빛의 적용방식을 알아보기 위하여 그것의 개념과 형성과정을 고찰하며, 이를 바탕으로 선행 사례를 분석한다. 이후 부드러운 조각과 빛을 결합을 활용한 본 연구자의 실험적인 작업을 통해 섬유 예술에서 빛의 활용 가능성과 조형 요소로서의 특성에 대해 고찰하며, 섬유예술표현의다양한 가능성과 방향성을 탐색한다. 이를 바탕으로 빛의 조형 효과를 적용한 부드러운 조각은 빛의표현 유형에 따라 색채, 공간감, 질감 표현을 유용하게 할 수 있음을 고찰하였다. 더불어 부드러운 조각이라는 기존의 설치 작업과 빛의 다양한 유형을 활용한 공간을 하나의 장으로 결부시킴으로써 보다종합적인 영역의 예술로 이끌어 낼 수 있는 섬유예술표현의 확장 가능성을 확인하였다.

영어초록

As the boundaries between genres are getting blurrier fiber art is trying to combine with different genres and is expanding into the area of soft sculpture. In particular, new mixed media works applying digital art or media art are being attempted according to the development of image technology. Through this, various works that attract viewers with more dynamic effects are emerging from stereotypes of existing genres. The purpose of this study is to present a new direction and possibility of expansion of fiber art in the application of light, a major digital medium, to sculpture, paying attention to recent trends in contemporary art. The research method is as follows. Light has always been an important element in art. Therefore, light has various meanings according to the times and culture and has been applied to art in various ways.
In this study, the concept of light and its role in art was first examined, and then the characteristics of light applied to art and its formative effects were examined by classifying works according to their expression types. In addition, the concept and formation process of ‘soft sculpture’, which is the main trend of modern fiber art, were examined in order to study the application methods of various lights, and based on this, precedent cases were analyzed. After that, through the researcher’s experimental work using the combination of soft sculpture and light, the possibility of using light in fiber art and its characteristics as a formative element were considered, and various possibilities and directions of fiber art expression were explored. Based on this, it was considered that soft sculptures applied with the formative effect of light can be useful for color, spatial sense, and texture expression depending on the type of light expression.
In addition, by combining the existing installation work of soft sculpture and the space utilizing various types of light into one chapter, the possibility of expanding the expression of fiber art that can lead to a more comprehensive area of art was confirmed.
