방혜자 작품연구: 매체와 재료의 실험을 통한 ‘빛’의 탐구 (A Study on the Works of Bang Hai-ja: Exploring of ‘Light’ through Media and Materials Experiments)

초록

‘빛’의 화가로 세계적으로 알려진 방혜자는 한국현대미술의 유형적 맥락으로 범주화 할 수 없는 독자적인 세계를 구축하고 있는 작가이다. 이 논문에서는 방혜자가 지속적으로 탐구한 ‘다양한 재료에 의한 물질성’의 특징이 어떻게 정신적인 ‘빛’의 개념과 연결되어작품에 구현되었는지 그 과정과 작품의 분석을 미술사적 관점에서 고찰해보고자 한다. 그녀는 비-물질적인 빛을 표현하기 위해 오히려 물질성이 강한 종이(한지 혹은 닥지), 가죽, 사포, 톱밥, 헝겊, 무직천, 모래, 흙의 재료를 이용하여 ‘지속적으로 마티에르(matiér)1)에 대한 연구’를 지속해왔다.
이 연구는 방혜자의 긴 화업 가운데, 다양한 재료의사용과 실험, 한지 사용 등 주로 물질성을 이용한 작품들을 분석하고, 이것이 이후 비물질적인 ‘빛’의 작업으로 변화하는 조형적 과정을 고찰하고자 하는 것이목적이다. 방혜자의 빛에 대한 천착은 1990년대 이후의 작품에서 본격적으로 나타나며 그 ‘빛’은 기존 연구나 자료에서 강조하듯이 오로지 정신적이고 우주적이며 추상적인 개념만이 아닌 ‘다양한 재료에 대한 실험들’이 있었기 때문에, 그녀의 화업에서 1960년대와70년대 작품에 대한 조형적 작품분석과 고찰은 매우중요한 의미를 가진다.
2022년 방혜자가 타계할 때까지 60여년간의 오랜화업과 이력에 비해 작가에 대한 체계적이고 전문적인 학술적인 연구는 거의 없다고 해도 과언이 아니다.
따라서, 방혜자 작가에 대한 예술론은 파리와 한국을오가며 배우고 연구한 교육환경, 미술환경, 시대적 역사적 배경과 의미, 미술사적 의의 등 다양한 각도에서연구되어야 할 필요성이 있다.
이러한 배경하에, 본 연구범위는 그가 파리로 유학을 가서 본격적으로 서구의 배경하에 다양한 재료와물질의 실험을 하던 시절인 1960년대부터 1970년대를중심으로 살펴볼 것이다. 연구의 방법으로는 방혜자의방대한 화업 가운데, 매체와 재료의 실험을 통한 ‘빛’ 의 탐구를 분석, 연구하기 위하여 마티에르(matiér)의탐색과 실험 시기의 작품들을 살펴보고, 당대 프랑스를 중심으로 한 앵포르멜(Art Informel)과 한국 화단의 추상미술의 유입과 영향관계 등을 살펴본다.
미술사적 의의 및 기대효과로는 세계미술의 중심지인 파리에서 수학하며 다양한 작업을 계속해왔고, 100 여회에 이르는 개인적 이력과 190여회에 이르는 단체전 이력에서도 말해주듯 세계 곳곳에서의 전시경력을가진 방혜자의 화업을 연구 분석하는 것은 미술사를연구하는 후학들의 후속연구에 미력이나마 기초적인자료를 제공할 것으로 기대한다. 다만 이 논문에서는60여년간의 방대한 작품활동과 작품에 대한 분석을종합적으로 분석하지 못하는 지면상 한계가 있어, 1960-70년대의 방혜자 화업의 기본을 이루는 시기를중심으로 살펴보고, 후속 연구에서 ‘빛’의 개념이 확연히 드러나는 작품들과 타계 직전에 완성한 샤르트르대성당 스테인드 글라스 작업까지를 연구할 것이다.

영어초록

Bang Hai-ja(The English name was written by her), known internationally as a painter of ‘light,’ is an artist who is building a unique world that cannot be categorized within the tangible context of Korean contemporary art. In this paper, we will examine the process of how the characteristics of ‘materiality through various materials’ that Bang Hai-ja continuously explored were connected to the spiritual concept of ‘light’ and were implemented in her works, and the analysis of the works from an art historical perspective. In order to express non-material light, she has continued to “continue to study matiér” using materials such as strong material paper (Korean paper or Dakji), leather, sandpaper, sawdust, cloth, cotton, sand, and soil.
The purpose of this study is to analyze works that mainly use materiality, such as the use of various materials, experiments, and use of Korean paper, among Bang Hai-ja’s long painting industry, and to examine the formative process of changing this into the work of immaterial “light.” Bang Hai-ja’s obsession with light appears in earnest in works since the 1990s, and because “light” was not only a spiritual, cosmic, and abstract concept, but also “experiments on various materials,” the analysis and consideration of formative works from the 1960s and 70s in her work in the 1960s and 70s.
It is no exaggeration to say that there is little systematic and professional academic research on the artist compared to the 60 years of painting and history until Bang Hai-ja passed away in 2022. Therefore, the art theory of Bang Hai-ja needs to be studied from various angles, including the educational environment, the art environment, the historical background and meaning of the times, and the historical significance of art. The scope of this study will focus on the 1960s to 1970s, when he went to Paris to study and experimented with various materials and materials in earnest under a Western background. As a method of research, among Bang Hai-ja’s vast painting industry, to analyze and study the exploration of “light” through experiments with media and materials, we examine Matiér’s exploration and experimental works, and examine the influx and influence of Art Informel and Korean flowerbeds centered on France at the time.
The significance and expected effect of art history is that she has continued to study and work variously in Paris, the center of world art, and as her personal history of more than 100 times and her team exhibition history of 190 times, research and analysis of Bang Hai-ja’s painting industry with exhibition experience around the world is expected to provide incomplete but basic data for subsequent studies of art history.
However, since this paper has a paper limitation in not being able to comprehensively analyze the vast work activities and analysis of works for more than 60 years, I will focus on the period that forms the basis of the Bang Hai-ja painting industry in the 1960s and 1970s, and study works that clearly reveal the concept of “light” in subsequent studies and the stained glass work of Chartres Cathedral completed just before death.
