초록

1968년 「완구점 여인」으로 등단한 오정희 작품 세계의 바탕에는 일상과 비일상에 대한 강박적 대립의식이 흐르고 있다.
본고에서는 출산 후 첫 발표작인 「꿈꾸는 새」이후 「옛 우물」에 이르기까지 작가의식의 뚜렷한 변모를 드러내는 작품을 대상으로, 일상과 비일상이 조화를 이루어 여성적 삶의 참뜻에 도달하는 과정을 검토하였다.
「꿈꾸는 새」, 「비어있는 들」, 「별사」의 주인공은 보이지 않는 세계를 향한 갈망의 끈을 놓치지 않으려는 ‘안간힘’과 남편, 아이가 존재하는 일상의 질서에 순응하려는 욕구의 팽팽한 대립을 거쳐, 일상의 틈에 스며드는 죽음의 기미를 두려워하기 시작한다.
「별사」의 주인공은 삶과 죽음의 공존을 승인하려고 노력하는 과정에서 일상의 생명성을 발견한다. 그러나 여전히 남편과의 격절감이 비일상에 대한 환상으로, 환상 속에서 불안을 키우는 악순환에서 벗어나지 못한다.
2년간 미국 체류 후 발표한 「파로호」에서 오정희는 눈에 띄는 변모를 보여준다. 주인공은 ‘생활’을 알지 못하는 남편을 통해 비일상의 허위를 통찰한다. 그와 더불어 생활 안에서 생활 아닌 것을 갖고자 했던 안간힘이란 거짓된 자기연민에 불과함을 깨닫고 비루한 삶에서 단호하게 돌아선다. ‘고양이 죽이기’는 오정희의 ‘제2의 자기 성장의 시련기’가 끝났음을 상징한다. 주인공 혜순이 ‘홀로서기’에 성공하고 새롭게 성찰하는 것은 일상의 생명력이다.
그 후 5년 만에 발표한 작품 「옛 우물」에서 오정희는 시간의 지배에서 한 치도 벗어날 수 없는 인간 조건 속에서 잉태와 출산이라는 신비한 생명현상의 주역을 맡아온 여성 삶에 내재한 비의성을 집요하게 통찰한다. ‘자기만의 방’에서 「옛 우물」의 주인공은 일상 속에서 일어나는 모든 생명 현상 이면을 투시하여 삶의 비의를 포착할 수 있는 눈을 키움으로써 우주의 산파로 새롭게 태어나며, 죽음과 생명을 대긍정하는 생명주의자의 반열에 오르게 된다.

Oh Jung-hee presented a confrontation between everyday lives and non-everyday lives in her works since she debuted in 1968 with “The Toyshop Woman.”
This paper looked into several novels that presented clear transitions in Oh’s awareness as a novelist from “A Dreaming Bird,” her first work after having a baby, to “The Old Well,” in order to see how life and literature formed harmony and reached a secret, hidden meaning of a life of a woman.
Heroines in “A Dreaming Bird”, “An Empty Field” and “Parting Words” are the same characters. On one hand, they try so hard not to lose the thread of desire into the invisible world. On the other hand, they have a desire to accept to the order of their everyday lives with their husbands and children. They suffer a keen confrontation between these two desires, and start to fear signs of death that soak into cracks of daily lives.
The heroine of “Parting Words” breaks free from her locked-up self-awareness to a certain extent and tries to approve the coexistence of life and death. In this process, the heroine discovers a new meaning of everyday lives. The problem is in a vicious circle where her feeling of isolation from her husband forms a fantasy and that fantasy leads to anxiety. As long as the heroine is confined in such a fantasy, she can never face up to the reality and succeed to stand on her own two feet.
In “The Lake Paro”, which Oh published after two-year visit to the United States, the novelist presented an eye-catching change. The heroine in this novel penetrates into the falsehood of non-everyday lives, through her husband who does not understand ‘life.’ Then the heroine realizes that it was only a false self-pity to try hard to achieve something that is not related to life in her life, and she flatly turns away from a false, self-deceiving life. “Killing a Cat”, meanwhile, is a signal that the “second period of tough coming-of-age” of the novelist is over. The heroine, Hye-soon, succeeds to stand on her two feet and makes new self-reflections, and this is the vital power of everyday lives.
In “The Old Well”, which Oh published five years later, Oh makes tenacious and obsessive reflections on the secret meaning hidden inside lives of women, who served the main roles in mysterious life phenomena regarding pregnancy and childbirth in human conditions that can never be free from the control of time. In a “room of one’s own”, the heroine of “The Old Well” sees through the other side of all the life phenomena that happen in everyday lives, and earns the eye to capture the secret, hidden meaning of living. By doing so, the heroine is reborn as a midwife of the universe. At the same time, she rises to the rank of believers of life, who affirms both life and death.
