비조각론: 그린버그의 자기부정과 크라우스의 자기모순의 비평론 (Non-Sculpture Theory: Review on Greenberg’s Self-Negation and Krauss’s Self-Contradiction)

초록

본고는 비조각에 관한 매체이론을 다루는 데 있어, 그린버그의 자기부정과 크라우스의 자기모순의 비평론을 살펴보고자 한다. 매체의 혼종과 확장에 따라 변화되는 조각/비조각이 어떻게 조각의 장 안으로 흡수될 수 있는가에 있어서, 그린버그의 모더니즘 이론과 크라우스의 구조주의적 비평론은 서로 상충한다. 그린버그에게 있어 예술 매체는 자기부정 즉 자기비판을 통해 고유의 매체특정성을 담지할 때 비로소 예술의 순수성과 자기충족성을 얻을 수 있다. 그린버그의 논리는 그럼으로써 회화는 평면성을 획득하는 것이고 조각은 추상조각으로 진화해간다는 역사주의의 개념을 갖는다. 그러나 이러한 그린버그의 주장은 60년대 말 등장한 대지예술, 미니멀 조각, 개념미술의 구조물 등을 조각의 범주에서 배제하는 결과를 가져온다. 그린버그가 강조하는 물질적 차원의 매체 개념에 반대해, 크라우스는 그린버그의 매체특정성 개념에 있어서 ‘매체’ 자체의 의미를 아예 재규정할 필요성을 지적한다. 크라우스의 매체 개념은 당시 모더니즘 조각에서 중요시 여기는 시각성만으로는 설명할 수 없는 즉 논리적 조건의 상황 속으로 들어간 예술들을 포스트모더니즘의 맥락에서 새롭게 예술로 규정해주는 논리라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 문제의식에서 크라우스는 모더니즘적 맥락에서의 매체특정적(Media specificity) 조각 개념을 극복한 ‘조각 영역의 확장’ 이론을 마련하였다. 그러나 이후 그녀는 포스트-매체(post-medium) 담론을 통해 매체특정성의 개념을 ‘기술적-지지체’라는 이름으로 새롭게 변주시킨다. 다시 말해 크라우스는 그린버그의 매체특정성을 전용하여 뉴미디어시대의 매체담론으로 활성화하고자 한 것이다. 그런데 크라우스가 ‘자기모순의 비평’에 당착했다는 비판을 받는 지점이 바로 이 매체특정성을 부활시킨 ‘포스트-매체론’ 때문이다. 크라우스가 말하는 매체의 재창안이라는 틀에서 볼 때, 과거의 특정 매체들도 확장된 매체의 영역 안으로 들어올 필요가 있기 때문이다. 특히 비조각에 관한한, 구조주의 기호학자 그레마스의 사각형에서 이끌어낸 크라우스의 확장된 조각장은 동시대의 비조각들을 포용하는 데 있어 여전히 유효하다. 그린버그의 매체특정성을 비판했던 지난날 크라우스의 비평이 포스트-매체 담론에서 ‘기억’, ‘기술적 지지체’ 및 ‘재창안’이라는 단어로 과거의 특정적 매체들을 수용한다고 해서 그린버그식으로 보수적 회귀를 한다고 보기는 어렵다. 본고는, 그린버그의 모더니즘 조각론 즉 예술의 순수성을 지키기 위해 펼친 매체이론으로는 수용할 수 없었던 비조각을 크라우스는 구조주의 사각형을 도입함으로써 해명할 수 있으며, 그것이 조각예술의 장을 열었을 뿐 아니라 여전히 많은 동시대 매체들을 포용하는 다이어그램으로 활용되고 있다는 점을 강조하고자 한다. 그 이유는 크라우스의 포스트매체이론에서 매체특정성 개념은 예술과 대중매체와의 경계선을 지켜낼 뿐 아니라 끊임없이 확장하는 매체들을 다루는 논리로서 사용될 수 있기 때문이다. 그린버그가 키치에 대한 경계로 아방가르드를 옹호한 것처럼, 매체의 재창안을 통해 크라우스가 예로 든 소수의 예술가들이 보여주는 것처럼, 자본과 시장의 논리에 흡수되지 않으려는 부단한 동시대 예술가들의 노력은 매체의 재창안 이론을 뒷받침한다고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

The paper seeks to examine Clement Greenberg’s criticism of self-denial and Rosalind Krauss’ self-contradiction in addressing the media theory of non-sculpture. Greenberg’s modernist theory and Krauss' structuralist criticism conflict in how sculpture/non-sculpture that change as media mix and expand can be absorbed into the sculpture’s field. For Greenberg, art media can only gain purity and self-fullfillingness when it contains ‘self-denial’, that is medium-specificity that cannot be returned to other areas through self-criticism. The logic of Greenberg has thus the concept of historicism that painting acquires flatness and sculpture has been evolving into abstract sculpture. However, Greenberg’s argument resulted in the exclusion of architectural structures of land art, minimalism, and conceptual art from the sculpture category, which emerged in the late 1960s. Against this materialistic concept of medium, Krauss points out the need to redefine the meaning of ‘medium’ itself in Greenberg’s concept of medium-specificity. This can be called the logic of the medium that newly defines art as art in the context of postmodernism, which entered the situation of logical conditions that cannot be explained in the logic of visuality counts most in modernism sculpture at that time. In this sense of problem, Krauss developed the concept of ‘extension of the sculptural field’ that overcame the concept of medium-specific sculpture in a modernistic context, but later changed the concept of medium-specificity to the name ‘technical-support’ in creating post-medium discourse. Krauss wanted to convert the Greenberg’s medium-specificity to a medium discourse in the new medium era. It is the ‘post-medium theory’ that revived this media specificity with which Krauss has been criticized for the ‘criticism of self contradiction.’ This is because I think Krauss needs to enter the realm of expanded criticism in the framework of reinventing of the medium. In particular, when it comes to sculptures and non-sculptures, I believe that the extended field of sculpture derived from the Greimas square, structuralism semiologist, is still valid in embracing contemporary non-sculptures. It is hard to say that Krauss, criticized Greenberg’s medium-specificity in the past, returns to Greenberg’s medium-specificity conservatively with the words ‘memory,’ ‘technical-support’ and ‘reinventing’ accepting certain medium in the past through post-media discourse. The essay emphasizes that Krauss’ structuralist square is able to explain the non-sculpture, which was not acceptable to Greenberg’s modernist sculpture theory or medium theory to preserve the purity of art, not only opened the field of non-sculpture but still used as a diagram to embrace many contemporary medium. This is because in Krauss’ post-medium theory, the concept of technical-support can be used as a logic to deal with ever-expanding media as well as protecting the boundaries between art and mass media. Just as Greenberg advocated avant-garde as a boundary against Kitsch, the efforts of contemporary artists to not be absorbed by capital and market logic, as Krauss illustrates by a handful of artists, can be seen as supporting reinventing the medium.
