초록

이 논문은 三陟 鳳凰山 彌勒佛과 불상과의 조형적 상관성, 불교 조형물로서 삼척봉황산 미륵불의 조성 배경 등을 중심으로 살펴본 것이다. 특히 삼척지역 불교조각양상을 검토하여, 봉황산 미륵불의 조형적 원류가 같은 시기 같은 지역 불교조각에있음을 밝히고자 하였다. 아울러 조성 배경 관련, ‘殺氣’의 정체가 무엇이며, 왜불교미술품으로 그 살기를 막으려고 했던 배경이 무엇인지에 대해서도 논의하였다.
결론적으로 삼척 봉황산 석상은 삼척지역의 여러 불상, 예를 들면 삼화사, 천은사, 신흥사, 영은사 불상 등을 모방·변형한 것이다. 그러나 모방의 한계와 불상 조각에능숙하지 않은 집단이 조성을 주도하면서 유기적 조화를 살펴볼 수 없고 조각 수법이 뒤떨어진다. 능묘 석인상의 얼굴과 봉황산 미륵불의 얼굴 표현이 일치하는 것으로 보아, 삼척 및 關東 일대에서 활동하며 유교조각을 담당했던 장인들이 봉황산미륵불 조성을 주도했을 가능성이 크다.
이규헌이 봉황산 정상에 석상을 조성한 배경과 이유는 고려시대 확립된 ‘비보사탑설’의 영향이 크며 당시 빈번했던 화재를 예방하고 삼척부민들의 삶을 위협했던災異를 물리치기 위해서였다. 20여 년 후 삼척부민들은 彌勒下生의 염원과 함께토착 신앙인 미르(용)신앙의 영향으로 현재의 위치로 옮기고 미륵불로 지칭하기시작하여 현재에 이르고 있다.
삼척 봉황산 미륵불은 비록 19세기 조성된 것이고 예술성이 뚜렷하지는 않으나, 지역사·미술사·불교사·민속학적으로 차별화되는 의의와 가치를 지닌다. 구체적으로 봉황산 미륵불은 적극적으로 고을의 안녕을 염원하고 빈번했던 재이를 대처하기 위한 지방관의 적극적인 통치행위의 한 사례로써 조선 후기 지역사 연구에 중요한 자료다. 미술사적으로도 조성 시기와 이유가 밝혀져 있다는 점에서 19세기 조각사 연구에 있어 중요한 자료로 가치를 지닌다. 이뿐만 아니라, 불교조각과 유교조각의 특징과 요소가 융합된 조각상이라는 점에서 조선 말 造像 활동 관련 장인 수급양상을 보여주는 사례가 된다. 불교사적으로도 조선 후기 불교가 삼척지역의 주민들에 끼친 영향은 물론 彌勒下生信仰의 일면을 보여주는 자료라는 점에서 가치와의의가 있다. 또한 ‘풍수지리설’이 지방통치에 영향을 끼치고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 고려 건국 후 확립된 ‘비보사탑설’이 조선 말까지 영향을 끼쳤음을 보여주는 것으로써 관련 연구의 귀중한 자료가 된다. 그리고 마지막으로, 토착 신앙인 미르신앙과관련성을 살펴볼 수 있어, 민속학적으로도 매우 큰 가치와 의의가 있다.

영어초록

The main discussion of this study focuses on the origins of the Maitreya Buddha Statues of Bonghwangsan Mountain in Samcheok and the aesthetic relationship between the statues and other works of mainstream Buddhist sculpture in Korea. The discussion concludes that the origin of the statues is closely connected with other Buddhist sculptures made in and around Samcheok during the same period. The discussion also deals with the meaning of "the murderous energy" which led to the origin of the statues, and the reason why the creators of the statues decided to ward off evil energy with Buddhist images.
The main conclusion of the discussion is that the stone statues of Bonghwangsan Mountain in Samcheok were inspired by the Buddhist images enshrined in local Buddhist temples such as Samhwasa, Cheoneunsa, Sinheungsa and Yeongeunsa. Unfortunately, the carvers of these statues were unable to copy the originals faithfully and achieve their organic harmony due to a lack of carving skills and experience as well as knowledge of Buddhist sculpture. Considering the remarkable similarity between the facial expressions of the stone guardians standing at the royal tombs of Joseon and those of the Maitreya statues of Bonghwangsan Mountain, the latter could have been made by artisans of Samcheok and Gwandong(the East Coast of Gangwon-do Province) area.
As for the background to the stone images, it is generally accepted that Yi Gyu-heon, influenced by the Pungsu (or Feng Shui) principles relating to "guardian temples and pagodas" established during the Goryeo period (918-1392), placed them on the summit of Bonghwangsan Mountain in the belief that they would help prevent fire and expel the evil forces that were threatening the lives of the inhabitants of Samcheok-bu. The statues were moved to their current location some twenty years later according to the aspirations of the people of Samcheok to reach the utopian world ruled by Maitreya Buddha and the traditional folk belief in the dragon as a supreme power.
Although they were created relatively recently, in the nineteenth century, and lack aesthetic merit, the Maitreya Statues of Bonghwangsan Mountain in Samcheok hold significant value in terms of the history of the local community, art, Buddhism and folklore. Specifically, the statues are directly connected with the efforts of a local administrative head to protect his town against disasters caused by evil forces, and thus provide important clues for studies on the area in the late Joseon period. The statues are also regarded as an important tangible source for research on Korean Buddhist sculpture of the nineteenth century. The combination of characteristic features of Buddhist and Confucian sculptures also makes the statues a useful resource for studies on the supply and demand of artisans who created stone sculptural works during the late Joseon period. The statues are also regarded as a valuable source of knowledge regarding the influence of Buddhism on the lives of the inhabitants of Samcheok during late Joseon, and the tradition of Maitreya worship that they preserved in particular. They also constitute tangible evidence to support the theory that the principles of Pungsu were exploited by the ruling class of Joseon in order to govern the regions more effectively and that the principle of using a guardian temple or pagoda to ward off evil forces remained influential from its emergence in the Goryeo period to the late Joseon period. Finally, the statues are also important sources for folklore studies, particularly the tradition of dragon worship among the common people of Samcheok.
