우리나라 불복장의 특징 (Characteristics of Korean bulbokjang)

초록

우리나라의 佛腹藏은 像에 腹藏孔을 만들어 그 안에 여러 物目을 安立하는 형식으로 중국·일본의 복장 형식과 다른 독특한 문화를 형성하였다. 우리나라 불복장이 독자적인 형식으로 발전한 데에는 『造像經』의 역할이 지대하였다. 『조상경』은 물목, 의례를 중심으로 한 「諸佛菩薩腹藏壇儀式」, 「妙吉祥大敎王經」, 「三悉地檀釋」을 통해 불복장을 불교의식으로 구체화시키고 있다. 이 경전들은 중기 밀교의 근간을 이룬 『大毘盧遮那成佛神變加持經』(이하 『대일경』)과 『金剛頂瑜伽中略出念誦經』(이하 『금강정경』)을 비롯하여 『佛說陀羅尼集經』(이하 『다라니집경』), 『妙吉祥平等秘密最上觀門大敎王經大敎王經』(이하 『묘길상대교왕경』), 『三種悉地三部儀軌』 등 후기 밀교 경전과 관련성이 나타나고 있다. 이에 우리나라 불복장의 중요한 요소인 八葉筒과 喉鈴筒, 그리고 오방에 대해 五佛, 五智의 의미와 사상 등을 밀교 경전과의 연계 속에서 살펴보고자 하였다.
『조상경』의 모든 물목은 오방위에 기초하고 있으며, 그 중 五寶甁, 五穀, 五藥, 五寶, 五香, 五黃 등은 『대일경』의 태장과 『금강정경』의 금강계 양부만다라와 관련된 오불을 형성하고 있다. 태장과 금강계 오불의 지혜는 五方鏡, 五輪種子, 眞心種子와 더불어 오보병, 오색실을 통해 五形, 五字, 五色 등으로 그 의미가 증폭된 반면 『조상경』 「묘길상대교왕경」의 근간이 된 『묘길상대교왕경』에서는 등장하지 않는다. 따라서 태장과 금강계뿐만 아니라 『삼종실지삼부의궤』는 고려시대 『묘길상대교왕경』이 도입되기 이전 우리나라에 전래되었을 가능성이 크다. 이를 통해 중국에 전래된 중기 밀교와 그 이후 중국적으로 전개된 후기 밀교와의 연결선상에서 『조상경』의 사상적 배경이 이루어졌음을 알 수 있다.
고려시대와 조선시대 불복장의 형식이 조선전기 喉穴을 갖춘 후령통의 등장과 함께 변화되는 것으로 보아 이 시기 불복장의 밀교적 성격에 변화가 있었던 것으로 보인다. 이러한 변화는 고려시대 팔엽통에서 조선시대 후령통이라는 대별·상통되는 중심물목을 형성하였다. 태장만다라의 中台八葉院의 형상과 오불은 고려시대 팔엽통과 오보병으로 변화·수용되었다. 조선시대 후령통은 금강계만다라에서 소리로써 만법을 표출하는 의미가 후혈을 통해 증폭되고 있는 것이며, 이는 喉鈴이 안립물목으로 발견되지 않는 시기와 상통되고 있어 후혈이 후령을 대신하고 있음을 유추할 수 있다. 즉, 후령통은 오지를 담고 있는 오보병을 오색실로 결계하여 후혈을 통해 외부와 연결됨으로써 일체의 법을 완성하고 있는 것이라 하겠다.
우리나라 불복장에 있어 밀교의 특징은 물목의 형성, 의식체계, 의미의 수용 등 전반에 걸쳐 나타나고 있다. 즉, 밀교의 오방을 중심으로 한 만다라적 요소가 고려시대 이래로 조선시대까지 이어지면서 우리나라만의 독특한 형식을 지닌 불복장으로 성립되었다고 판단된다.

영어초록

The Korean practice known as bulbokjang(佛腹藏), which involves enshrining artifacts in cavities within Buddhist statues differs from equivalent practices in China and Japan, having developed a unique local culture of its own. The Buddhist text Josang gyeong(造像經) was hugely influential in the development of this unique form of bulbokjang. Josang gyeong gives specific descriptions of bulbokjang as a Buddhist ritual, based on texts such as Zhufo pusa fuzang tan yishi(諸佛菩薩腹藏壇儀式), Miaojixiang dajiaowang jing(妙吉祥大敎王經) and San xidi tanshi(三悉地檀釋), which focus on enshrined items and ceremonies. These scriptures show connections to the Mahāvairocana Sūtra(大日經) and Vajraśeka Sūtra(金剛頂經), which formed the basis of middleperiod Esoteric Buddhism, and late-period Esoteric sūtras such as Tuoluoni ji jing (陀羅尼集經), Miaojixiang dajiaowang jing, and Sanzhong xidi sanbu yigui(三種悉地三部儀軌). This study therefore aims to examine the meaning and ideology behind palyeoptong(八葉筒) and huryeongtong (喉鈴筒), and the five direction-related Five Buddhas(五佛) and Five Wisdoms(五智), all important elements in Korean bulbokjang, within the context of their relationship to Esoteric Buddhist scriptures.
The Josang gyeong, in which all items mentioned are based on the five directions, contains elements such as the obobyeong(五寶甁), ogok(五穀), o’yak(五藥), obo(五寶), ohyang(五香) and ohwang(五黃). These are forms of the Five Buddhas, related to the Womb Realm Mandala of the Mahāvairocana Sūtra and the Diamond Realm Mandala of the Vajraśekhara Sūtra. The wisdom of the Five Buddhas, in conjunction with the obang’gyeong(五方鏡), oryun jongja(五輪種子), and jinsim jongja(眞心種子), which do not appear in the Miaojixiang dajiaowang jing, gain extended meaning through the obobyeong and osaeksil(五色絲) to become ohyeong(五形), oja(五字) and osaek(五色). It is therefore highly likely that not only the Womb Realm and Diamond Realm Mandalas but also Sanzhong xidi sanbu yigui had reached Korea before the introduction of Miaojixiang dajiaowang jing during the Goryeo period. This tells us that the ideological background to Josang gyeong was a continuation of mid-period Esoteric Buddhism from China and, subsequently, late-period Esoteric Buddhism, which continued to develop in a style similar to that of China.
The fact that the forms of bulbokjang changed from Goryeo to Joseon in conjunction with the appearance of huryeongtong with huhyeol(喉穴) during the early Joseon period indicates a change in the esoteric nature of bulbokjang at this time. This change gave shape to the key differences and similarities between Goryeo palyeongtong and Joseon huryeongtong. The formation of the central eight-petal hall depicted in Womb Realm mandala and the Five Buddhas were transformed and accommodated in the Goryeo period in the forms of palyeongtong and obobyeong. The pipe-like huhyeol of Joseon-period huryeongtong represents an expression of the universe in the sounds of the Diamond Realm mandala; this corresponds to the period from which huryeong(喉鈴) have not been discovered inside Buddha statues, allowing us to surmise that the huhyeol was introduced as a replacement for the huryeong. In other words, it can be said that the huryeongtong represents a single, complete dharma by providing a connection between the obobyeong inside it and the outside, via the osaeksil and the huhyeol.
The characteristics of Esoteric Buddhism are visible in all aspects of Korean bulbokjang, from enshrined items to rites and imbued significance. In other words, it appears that Esoteric Buddhist mandala-related elements based on the principle of the five directions were incorporated during the Goryeo and Joseon periods to produce bulbokjang with unique Korean characteristics.
