초월주의적 관점에서 본 『험볼트의 선물』 (Humboldt's Gift in Emersonian Transcendental Perspective)

초록

본 논문의 목적은 유태계 미국 작가인 솔 벨로우의 대표작인 『험볼트의 선물』(Humboldt's Gift)을 에머슨의 초월주의적 관점에서 분석하는 데 있다. 다수의 벨로우의 작품들 속에는 에머슨의 초월주의와 에머슨에 영향을 끼친 힌두이즘같은 동양 사상적 요소들이 함의되어 있다. 초월적인 자아 아트만(Atman)이 우주적 영혼이자 우주의 근본원리인 브라만(Brahman)과 궁극적으로 동일하다는 범아일여(梵我一如) 사상을 담고 있는 인도의 경전들의 가르침은 에머슨이 대령(Oversoul) 사상의 기초를 세우는 데 많은 영향을 주었다. 에머슨은 대령을 세상의 모든 존재의 단일한 본질이자 모든 인류 영혼들의 근원이라고 보았다. 그의 이러한 믿음은 우리가 살고 있는 세계는 환영일 뿐이며 유일한 실체는 우주적 최고의 신인 브라만(Brhaman)이라고 가르치는 힌두교의 교리와 부합한다. 벨로우의 작품들 속에는 이와 같은 힌두교 경전의 가르침과 그에 영향을 받은 에머슨의 초월주의적인 요소들이 함의되어 있다.
『험볼트의 선물』(Humboldt's Gift)은 에머슨의 초월주의적인 요소들이 확연하게 드러나는 대표적인 작품이다. 소설의 주인공 씨트린(Citrine)은 유명한 작가가 되어 부와 명예를 누리게 되지만 그의 주변인들은 자신의 욕심을 채우기 위해 씨트린을 철저하게 이용하며 그의 몰락을 초래한다. 하지만 씨트린은 그러한 시련과 고통에 좌절하지 않으며 주변인들을 용서하고 삶을 포용한다. 그는 자신에게 인식되는 감각적 대상을 실체가 아닌 허상으로 인식함과 동시에 주체로서의 자신의 자아와 인식의 대상인 객체를 구분하지 않는 초월적 인식을 이끌어낸다. 이처럼 씨트린은 세상을 실재하지 않는 환영으로 인식함과 동시에 자신과 우주적 실체를 동일시하는 초월적 인식을 통해 삶의 시련과 고통에 지배되지 않으며 현실을 수용하고 포용한다. 이러한 씨트린의 인식은 자연의 객체들은 인간의 마음이 투사되어 나타난 환영이며, 나와 타인은 대령이라는 단일한 근원을 공유하여 서로 분리되지 않은 일체로 간주하는 힌두이즘과 그에 영향을 받은 에머슨의 초월주의 사상을 반영하는 것이다.

영어초록

This paper aims to analyze Saul Bellow's Humboldt's Gift in Emerson's Transcendental perspective. Most researches on Bellow's novels have been mainly focused on humanism, quest for self, Jewish ethnicity and acceptance of reality. However, many critics agree that lots of transcendental elements can be found in Bellow's works especially in his later novels. Bellow's novels suggest that he clearly shares not only Emerson's transcendental understanding of nature but ancient Indian thoughts such as Hinduism by which Emerson was significantly influenced. In fact, Emerson was fascinated with Hindu philosophy and references to ancient Hindu scriptures such as Bhagavadgita occur in his major works. This Indian religious thought gave him a new insight in his quest for truth.
According to ancient Indian philosophy, the seemingly solid "real" world in which we live is an illusion called "Maya." This belief asks us to abandon obsession with materialistic values which is non-existent. Also, ancient Indian scriptures tell us that Atman, the transcendental Self, is identical with Brahman, the impersonal Supreme Being. This belief influenced the monism of Emerson's concept of the Oversoul. Emerson thought the Oversoul is a single essence from which all human souls derive and that the souls of all people are connected. He sensed that human mind is the only reality and all other natures are reflectors of it. His belief corresponds to that of Hindu's that teaches us that the world in which we live is nothing but an illusion and only Brahman, the Supreme Being, is real. In Bellow's works, lots of teachings of Hindu scriptures and Emerson's transcendental insights mentioned above can be found.
Humboldt's Gift is one of the most prominent transcendental novels of Bellow's. When Citrine, the protagonist, gains both wealth and honor as a well-known writer, the people around him manipulates him to satisfy their selfish interests and desires. Although Citrine falls from positions of success into near-penury and social turmoil, he does not criticize them for he attains esoteric transcendental consciousness. He thinks all things in nature that are observed by him is nothing but illusions as Hindus believe. Citrine, who shares the mystic vision with American transcendentalists, does not distinguish the seer(subject) from the object. Also, he experiences his self(subject) and the object merging into oneness through spiritual endeavors such as meditation and reading mystic books. Citrine's transcendental awareness-the human soul is pure, immortal and full of bliss-allows him to encompass his suffering and abandon all ego-bound tendencies such as fear, aversion, anger and lust.
Citrine clearly attains Emersonian transcendental consciousness which is influenced by ancient Hindu philosophy.
