세책본 계열 <김원전>의 특징과 의미 (Characteristics and Significance of the Novels for Lending Edition of Kim Won Jeon)

초록

이 글은 그동안 경판본 <김원전>만을 善本으로 삼아 진행된 <김원전> 연구를 돌아보고, <김원전> 이본 연구가 구체화될 필요가 있다는 데서 출발했다. 방각본, 필사본, 세책본, 활자본 <김원전> 이본을 종합적으로 검토한 결과 <김원전> 이본은 ‘방각본⋅필사본 계열’, ‘세책본 계열’, ‘계명대⋅국립한글박물관 소장본 계열’로 나뉜다고 주장했다. 그 가운데 세책본 <김원전>과 활자본 <김원전>을 포함하는 ‘세책본 계열 <김원전>’의 특징과 의미를 밝히는 데 초점을 두었다.
세책본 <김원전>의 특징을 드러내기 위해 경판본 <김원전>과 세책본 <김원전>을 비교했다. 그 결과 경판본 <김원전>과 세책본 <김원전>은 서사 단락을 공유할 뿐, 세부 설정에서는 뚜렷한 차이를 지녔음을 확인했다. 더하여 경판본 <김원전>은 내용 및 서사 전개상 결함이 있는 이본이라고 논했다. 이에 반해 경판본 <김원전>에서 노정한 결함이 세책본 <김원전>에는 확인되지 않기에 세책본 <김원전>은 보다 정제된 이본이라고 말할 수 있었다.
활자본 <김원전>은 세책본 <김원전>을 저본으로 하면서도 동시에 적극적인 개작이 수반된 이본이었다. 활자본 <김원전>은 세책본 <김원전>의 서술을 따르다가도 사이사이 인물과 사건을 추가하여 이야기의 편폭을 확장하였다. 특히 ‘옥향’, ‘설영’, ‘장석만’이라는 인물의 추가로 인해 새로운 사건이 만들어지고, 복잡해진 문제가 해결되며, 주인공의 영웅성이 배가될 수 있었다. 이와 같은 활자본 <김원전>을 <김원전> 이본 가운데 가장 풍부한 서사를 흥미롭게 담아낸 이본이라고 평가하였다. 마지막으로 ‘방각본⋅필사본 계열 <김원전>’과 ‘계명대⋅국립한글박물관 소장본 계열 <김원전>’에 대한 고찰이 이어져야 하는 이유를 설명하였다.

영어초록

The starting point of this paper was the reflection on the research conducted on Kim Won Jeon so far, which has been based solely on Seoul edition as the treasured rare book, and the necessity for the research on Kim Won Jeon different versions to be concretized. By comprehensively reviewing the woodblock prints, manuscripts, novels for lending, and printed books of Kim Won Jeon, this paper argues that the different versions of Kim Won Jeon can be divided into the ‘woodblock print and manuscript edition’ and the ‘novels for lending edition’ and the ‘keimyung university⋅national hangeul museum collection edition’. Among them, the focus was placed on elucidating the characteristics and significance of the novels for lending edition of Kim Won Jeon, including the novels for lending of Kim Won Jeon and the printed books of Kim Won Jeon.
To illustrate the novels for lending Kim Won Jeon, a comparative analysis was conducted between the Seoul edition and the novels for lending of Kim Won Jeon. As a result, it was confirmed that while the Seoul edition of Kim Won Jeon and the novels for lending of Kim Won Jeon share narrative paragraphs, they exhibit distinct differences in detailed settings. Furthermore, it was argued that the Seoul edition of Kim Won Jeon is a different version that contains flaws in content and narrative development. In contrast, the novels for lending of Kim Won Jeon did not exhibit the flaws revealed in the Seoul edition of Kim Won Jeon, thus it could be said that the novels for lending of Kim Won Jeon is a more refined different version.
The printed books of Kim Won Jeon while based on the novels for lending of Kim Won Jeon also underwent active adaptations. It followed the narrative of the novels for lending of Kim Won Jeon while intermittently adding characters and events, thereby expanding the breadth of the story. In particular, the addition of characters such as ‘Ok Hyang’, ‘Seol Yeong’ and ‘Jang Seokman’ led to the creation of new events, resolution of complex issues, and enhancement of the protagonist’s heroism. This printed books of Kim Won Jeon was evaluated as the most richly narrated version among different versions of Kim Won Jeon. Lastly, the reasons why further study on the ‘woodblock prints and manuscript edition Kim Won Jeon’ and the ‘keimyung university⋅national hangeul museum collection edition Kim Won Jeon’ are needed were explained.
